327 yard passer with a 98 QB ratiing and 3 TD passes
121 rushing yards.
I’ll take that any day.
If we can get the defense squared away this could still be a hell of a season.

September 23, 2014 at 3:54 pm #8316MackeyserModeratorWe had enough offense that I would have beat 9 of the 12 teams in my FF league. Unfortunately, I wasn’t playing any of them… 0-3… dammit…
Good to see the offense doing well.
I honestly didn’t think the offense would be struggling with adjustments like this, but we still have added a lot of young people, so that’s going to happen as we upgrade.
I guess the 2015 timeframe wasn’t that far off after all…

Yes, the offense has been intriguing. But Dallas had a huge weakness
at Linebacker (two starters out) and Brian S and Austin D exploited it
masterfully. But I still wanna see how the O performs against the tough
NFC West defenses. So far, the offense is cause for optimism.I’ve only watched the first half so far, but Austin D was
impressive in the first half.w

I also think that Givens will get a lot less time on the field when Tavon returns. I like Austin Davis, but he didn’t get pressured much, and when he did, he made some mistakes, including the pick-6. This was not a good defense the Rams played.
September 23, 2014 at 6:19 pm #8324sdramParticipantThe O-Line played well for the most part – except for Wells dropping a turd in a crucial situation.
It’s fun to watch what Davis can actually do without being pile driven into the turf every other play. After the Minne game, I had 0 expectations so all the offense has actually fun for me to watch.
Now, if they can get the shitty ass defense to be more consistent, I think they can hang with about anybody. The division games are going to be fun to watch.
September 24, 2014 at 12:22 pm #8390HerzogParticipantWhat I like about Davis this year….very high pocket awareness. Also, he can read defenses and he knows this offense like the back of his hand. He knows what he’s doing out there.

You know it;s interesting about pocket awareness. He had absolutely none when he came in cold in the Vikes game. In fact I thought most if all the sacks he took were on him. Then he’s better (though the Vikes have more of a defense than Dallas or Tampa). You know what HE attributes it to? Staying in rhythm. Dropping, planting, throwing. He said that all week after the Vikes game, the coaches stressed that — stay in rhythm. Yet we see it as this quality of the qb’s psyche. Meanwhile, on top of it, to drop and throw you have to trust your receivers. If you don’t you have to compensate somehow for it, for example by bailing on the pocket or holding the ball waiting for a play. It really is amazing how much we put on the qb that isn’t really the qb.
September 24, 2014 at 5:35 pm #8405GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantQB always gets too much of the credit and way too much blame. Always been that way.
No matter what anyone thinks you gotta love what Austin Davis has done on the field thus far. I’m sure he’ll have some rough days. The key will be can he bounce back from those rough days and have good ones.

Well i dont know exactly what any of us means by ‘pocket awareness’
but i know that this kid has made three or four “escape and throw” plays
that were impressive. I love it. The ‘extend the play” thing. Its an attribute. A quality. I like it.
He also throws INT’s over the middle.
I hope that is not an attribute. I dont like it.w

September 24, 2014 at 6:54 pm #8415rflParticipantI actually agree that the offense is a silver lining. More than that, perhaps.
But it’s not going to be enough to get us to a winning season this year.
As for Davis, we may face a tricky situation. I figure we’ll win 5-7 games this year. I figure Davis will play a lot and look pretty good. In that scenario, the team will have tough decisions to make.
A pretty good QB can win 6-9 games a year, but that doesn’t get you over the hump in a tough division.
So consider their challenge in this scenario. They’d have–perhaps–Sam coming back, a near-elite QB who can’t be trusted to remain healthy. A pretty good young QB who probably has a lowish ceiling. And a draft pick too late for the premier QB prospects.
That’s a challenging scenario. It is really hard to chart a course with those variables.
Of course, it is just possible that Davis could demonstrate better than pretty good skills. If he emerged over 15 games as a QB you can build a competitive team on, then we would be really lucky for the 3rd time after Warner and Bulger. But, I don’t really see that happening. Hope I’m wrong.
By virtue of the absurd ...

That’s okay. I don’t believe in the “premier qb prospects.” Unless it’s once a decade guy like Luck. If you look at the top 15 qbs performing right now based solely on qb rating, it includes 5 players picked in the top 5 of the 1st round: Manning, Ryan, Luck, Newton, Rivers. No Stafford, no RG3, No Alex Smith, no Sanchez, no Eli.
I think if you add a good or very good qb to a more established team, then he has a chance to be as good as if not better than the top-picked guys.
Or for that matter, how about all currently top 15 qbs drafted or acquired (in any way shape or form) from 2011 on?
Luck, high 1st round
Newton, high 1st round
Manning, free agent
Fitzpatrick, free agent
Dalton, 2nd round
Kaepernick, 2nd round
Wilson, 3rd round
Foles, 3rd round
Cousins, 4th round
Hoyer, UDFA -
