The Dodgers moved back into first place after the Giants swooned in June. But, it’s still just the mid point in the season so the hard part isn’t done yet.
I haven’t really followed MLB the past 10 years as much more than a casual fan. For fathers day this year, my lovely wife and kids bought me the season ticket deal to MLB. They must be trying to find me stuff to do? Anyway, it’s been a reacquaintance period with my long lost LA Dodger fanaticism – we’re at the hand holding stage right now.
MLB is definitely different that it was 10 to 15 years ago. To me, it seems more plastique – more corporate – like many things these days it seems. Maybe I’m more aware at this stage in my life or maybe I’m more cynical. But, it’s still overgrown kids playing a game and they’re competing as hard as ever. They don’t seem to be mortal enemies like they were not so long ago. The post game or ‘walk off’ celebrations seem to be scripted. All their public responses are scripted or at least coached. There aren’t as many guys like Bobby, Mickey, Johnny, Billy, Donnie, Tommy, or Bennie. There isn’t as much emotion it seems.
I enjoy the daily grind of following ‘my’ team but living in the central time zone, the west coast games start at 9:10 PM and I rarely stay up past the sixth inning. And, 162 games is a lot of tv – too much sitting on my old white guy ass. I can’t and watch it all and shouldn’t anyway.
These Dodgers have as much talent as any of the top teams – they need their ‘stars’ to play up to their capability. If that happens they have a legitimate shot to win it all.
