If so under what conditions? Does he have to win x number of games? Etc.
This is about both:
* what YOU want to happen
* what you think WILL happen
December 7, 2016 at 6:37 am #60492nittany ramModeratorI don’t care if he’s back or not. I do want the OCs replaced. I want them to hire Norv Turner. Who knows if Turner even wants the job but that’s what I want.
If Fisher wins out to go 8-8, he’ll be back. Anything less than that makes it unlikely that he’ll be back.
December 7, 2016 at 7:14 am #60496joemadParticipantHe’s done
December 7, 2016 at 7:22 am #60497AgamemnonParticipantI don’t think it is about Fisher anymore. I think it is about Goff. You know, the QB Kroenke wanted. Fisher will be around as long as it looks like Goff will be the golden boy.
I don’t care if Fisher stays or not. He is no better or worse than most of the coaches. I think he is average or maybe slightly better than average, C+.
Goff is way more important to this team than Fisher. imo
December 7, 2016 at 8:21 am #60501sanbaggerParticipantI don’t think it is about Fisher anymore. I think it is about Goff
I have been squarely in this corner up until just recently…now I’m wavering a little. The fact that the Rams didn’t release the Fisher extension and then it mysteriously is leaked and then Demoff gives him far less than an endorsement is talking to me.
I don’t think I’m swayed yet that he’s getting a severance, but it has my attention.
As you say Ag, I think it’s more about Goff than it is about the head coach. I like Weinke and Groh and believe those guys are a good nucleus to help Goff. Just going from Pre-season to now, he is miles from where he started. Boras is a different animal in my opinion…I want him replaced.
What I want….IF Fisher is retained he absolutely needs a new established OC like Turner, but it doesn’t have to be him. I do not want another year of Fisher and Boras.
If Fisher is fired I’ll hold out and see what coaches are making it known they are available and discuss my wishes then.

One reason I’m not on the ‘Fire Fisher’ bandwagon is because I haven’t really been impressed with the list of possible replacements that have been mentioned so far.
December 7, 2016 at 1:06 pm #60517JackPMillerParticipantI’d prefer Fisher to move up stairs, working under Demoff. Keep Snead as GM, and hire a new Head Coach. There are some names that I do consider bringing in, and not in any order,
1. Teryl Austin DC Detroit Lions
2. Darrell Bevell OC Seattle Seahawks
3. Jim Bob Cooper OC Detroit Lions
4. Ken Norton Jr. DC Oakland Raiders
5. Urban Meyer HC Ohio State (sleeper, if he wins national title)
6. Brian Kelly HC Notre Dame
December 7, 2016 at 2:15 pm #60518ZooeyModeratorWant:
Dunno. What I want is a better offense. My gut feeling is I want Turner as OC. I’d say keep Fisher, I guess, but I don’t feel strongly about it.
Think:
I think Fisher stays two more years. I think that is Kroenke’s preference. I think Kroenke wants the option of a new coach in the new facility, part of the ribbon cutting gala, but if the Rams are winning by then, he may extend Fisher into the new stadium. However, the second year of Fisher’s deal is Team Option. That tells me that Kroenke is tired of 7-9 bullshit, and Fisher knows that. That is what a 1 year deal with an option for a second year says. But I think it also says Fisher gets next year regardless, barring a Linehan level loss of the players. Bottom line: I think Fisher is here next year, but he has to have a winning season in order to make it to 2018.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.
December 7, 2016 at 4:22 pm #60522nittany ramModeratorThis offense needs Mike Martz.
If they hire Vermiel to be the HC I’d gladly accept Martz as the OC.
December 7, 2016 at 5:05 pm #60523snowmanParticipantHe signed a two year contract extension so I think he stays for two years. We will not know if he stays longer until this time in 2018.
December 7, 2016 at 6:16 pm #60529HerzogParticipantI think he stays.
To me, the most important thing is that Goff stays in the same system. I must admit, I don’t even know what system we use right now. Whatever it is, I want that to continue. I don’t want him to have to learn a whole new syntax.
Other than that, I don’t give a ____. Ok I do, but it makes me feel better to say that I don’t.
December 7, 2016 at 7:21 pm #60532InvaderRamModeratorwhat i want.
well i don’t want fisher to be fired. i want him to succeed and for the rams to succeed. but i am not confident that can happen at this point.
what i think needs to happen.
i think fisher needs to be fired. i don’t think fisher can succeed under these circumstances. i think at some point things need to be changed. i know that’s not a popular opinion here, but i do think change for the sake of change can sometimes be good. i think things have become stagnant. i don’t think you can call it exactly this group had become comfortable with losing. i think that’s not accurate, but it’s hard for me to describe it any other way. maybe they’re too comfortable with jeff. i don’t know.
what i think will happen.
i think he’s gone. part of me thinks snead is safe. but i’m not sure. but it sounds like at least one of them is gone if not both. i’m nearly certain that they’re not both coming back. someone is getting thrown under the bus. it’s all very strange.

December 7, 2016 at 11:34 pm #60539NewMexicoRamParticipantI WANT Fisher gone.
I THINK he will be gone January 3, 2017 (Kroenke has to get over his hangover first).December 7, 2016 at 11:38 pm #60540PA RamParticipantI have not heard one compelling argument for keeping Jeff Fisher.
I’ve heard why he should be given another CHANCE. And that doesn’t even convince me. But I haven’t heard anyone make a strong argument why he should have the right to coach this team going forward.
I don’t even care about keeping Goff in this “system”–whatever it is. It’s a horrible offense. I get that things aren’t clicking because of A) Gurley B) The offensive line C) Boras D)Fisher. I don’t care. It doesn’t work and they show me no signs of being able to fix it. I’d rather Goff learn under a better offensive mind.
I do not want to have to rely week in and week out on winning games with a 9-6 score. I want Goff to be able to win a shootout if he has to.
He has had five years. If it was all bad luck–sorry. That’s the NFL. I can’t imagine there are any other teams who would keep a coach around with his five year record. The Rams shouldn’t either.
You had your chance, Jeff.
Let someone else have a shot.
Or as Chris Cooper said in the motion picture, “Adaptation”: “Done with Fish.”
Having said that–if he goes 2-2 the next four I believe he will be back. If he drops all four–eh. Maybe not.

I understand why people are out of patience with Fisher.
I mean…obviously.
But find me one example from the career of Stan Kroenke where he made a decision…a business choice…and then second guessed himself, and reversed course.
Never.
He signed Jeff Fisher for next year.
December 8, 2016 at 10:30 am #60551PA RamParticipantBut find me one example from the career of Stan Kroenke where he made a decision…a business choice…and then second guessed himself, and reversed course.
I haven’t really followed his career in other sports and such but I will say that I would be more surprised if he were fired than if they kept him around for another year. As I said, IF they drop the next four maybe–just MAYBE, he gets the sense that fans may begin to lose some enthusiasm for the team and leave him with half empty stadiums and that’s not what he wants going into the new stadium. On the other hand–maybe he doesn’t care how empty it is at the Colosseum right now, and figures just the excitement of a new stadium and new coach–at THAT time–will give him what he needs. Plus, if the Chargers are helping with costs–who knows?
How important is actually winning to him?
It’s a good question. I think the answer may lie in how that affects the bottom line.
I don’t think he’s a fan like WE’RE a fan. Not close. He’s not a Mark Cuban.
But anyway–I believe it is more likely Fisher stays next year.

I don’t agree with the way you frame that.
You build in an assumption I don’t accept.
You ASSUME that sticking with Fisher would mean not caring about winning. Well you make see it that way but it would take A LOT to make me think SK saw it that way.
Now you are a dedicated Recordite but what if SK is a Contextista? What if he believes, legitimately, that Fisher does not reduce to his record, but that the situation worked against him? That is–they need a qb and have for 3 years.
Unless you want to be a completely fundamentalist Recordite, which knowing you I assume you don’t (ie. the fundamentalist part), you have to concede it’s at least theoretically possible someone else, including SK, could see it differently.
We don’t know what will happen. We all have guesses. For that matter we could ALL be completely wrong and things happen for reasons no one anticipated. BUT what we CAN’T do IMO is speak for SK as if we knew his mind through mind-reading.
So to me you just have to concede this…for all we know, SK does not share your assumptions. That’s really possible.
Again we are mostly just debating things based on what each of us thinks. That makes it a clash of opinions. When it comes to SK’s mind, we’re all just guessing. So absolutely, I would never simply assume that (1) SK “doesn’t care about winning,” and (2) that for him keeping Fisher would mean he “doesn’t care about winning.” That’s YOU. It’s a valid opinion in terms of it just being an opinion, but you cannot possibly claim you know SK’s mind
There are perfectly valid ways to construe this where he keeps Fisher BECAUSE he cares about winning.
Fair enough?

Yes–that is fair.
I said that I didn’t know enough about Stan to know his mind and then made a statement about him not caring like we care. And I absolutely have no idea. Those are just assumptions–you’re right.
But the contextistas are wrong. That’s one thing I think we can all agree on. 🙂

Of course THAT was spoken like a true Contextista.

December 8, 2016 at 12:04 pm #60557ZooeyModeratorKroenke is a businessman who cares about his empire. What is important to him is building his brands. He is like a CEO of a corporation. A product may have a passionate following, but if the numbers aren’t there on sales, it will get axed. I get the feeling that fabulously rich and powerful people don’t really respect their consumers all that much.
Kroenke flat out told Arsenal supporters (his premier league soccer club in England) that if they were all about winning championships, they should change allegiance to Manchester United or Chelsea. Which they won’t. And he knows they won’t. Arsenal’s fan base is one of the most reliably loyal in the league, and that was one of the reasons Kroenke was attracted to it. Now, Arsenal is a pretty successful club. Supporters of other teams would rip off their arms to follow a team that has their consistent level of success, but while Arsenal has won a bunch of stuff (English football has a lot of cups and titles – it isn’t like our sports leagues that have a single championship each season), they don’t spend on salaries the way Man U and Chelsea do. And…fwiw…Arsenal has had the same coach for something like 25 years.
Kroenke keeps his overhead down. If you like Steinbrenner, or Cuban, or DeBartolo, Kroenke is not your guy. Go follow another team. Kroenke isn’t a fan; he is a businessman.
But the NFL is a bit different because the salary cap limits the overhead. Winning is not at odds with overhead like it is in baseball and the English Premier League. In fact, winning will improve the Rams brand, it will improve the value of the franchise.
And zn is right. Fans have decided that Fisher is a loser, and that the Rams need a new coach in order to win. But there is no indication that Kroenke has reached the same conclusion. In fact, he just signed Fisher to a new deal.
And my central argument is that Kroenke – being a consistent creature of business – did not commit money to an expense (Fisher’s salary) with an eye to making a decision about whether or not to retain him later. He made his decision to retain him, and then committed the money. That’s the way smart businessmen conduct business. This notion that he could have promised him money and then wanted to see how the Rams would do in a stretch of games in November…makes no sense. Everything we know about Kroenke is inconsistent with that idea.
Now, Kroenke HAS fired coaches, and fired coaches IN SEASON before. He has done that. Well, his son has. FWIW. His son fired Brian Shaw (in March – a month before the end of the NBA season), but the situation had completely melted down, and the entire team was in disarray.
So…imo…unless we start seeing players quit on Fisher, Fisher is here next year.
December 10, 2016 at 7:38 am #60650znModeratorIt;s looking more and more like he could be staying. That story is far from written yet but that’s how it looks to me right now.
In terms of the offense this year, which is what mostly held them back, I will say it again cause this is my strongest conviction on all this—
if Goff progresses no matter who the coach is, he will be fine
if Goff doesn’t progress, no matter who the coach is, they will struggle
MEANWHILE the great draft needs appear to be on the defense. It’s an unbelievably strong draft year for DEs, and they could use 2 DEs. Quinn may have to play in rotation and Hayes may have reached his expiration date.
…
December 10, 2016 at 10:30 am #60653WinnbradParticipantIf so under what conditions? Does he have to win x number of games? Etc.
This is about both:
* what YOU want to happen
* what you think WILL happen
What I think will happen:
Fisher will be the coach in 2017. A 2 year extension is really a 1 year extension.
If the team does better in 2017 (playoffs?!?!), Fisher will keep his job for 2018.
If the team remains the same or worsens in 2017 (7-9 BS) then Fisher is gone.
And so is Snead.
What do I want to happen?
The same as above.
