Across the league, there were 256 players drafted. Of those, 203 made the initial 53-man roster of the team that signed them. An additional 21 were added to NFI, PUP, or Injured Reserve, and 2 additional ones were cut for reasons of health rather than performance (Tyler Gaffney and Garrett Scott). This leaves 30 players that were cut by the team that drafted them, not exclusively for health reasons. This breaks down as follows:

The teams to cut the most draft picks were the Rams (4) and the Patriots (3). The Patriots also have the distinction of being the only team to cut a draft pick to get to the 75 man limit (Jemea Thomas, now of the Cowboys). There are 14 teams that did not cut a single draft pick.

Across the league, 68 players made initial 53-man rosters as UDFAs. The number kept by each team breaks down as follows:

    6: Browns
    5: Colts, Dolphins
    4: Jaguars, Rams
3: Panthers, Bears, Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers
2: Cardinals, Ravens, Broncos, Lions, Packers, Saints, Giants, Eagles, Seahawks, 49ers, Redskins
1: Falcons, Bengals, Texans, Vikings, Patriots, Buccs, Titans
    0: Bills, Jets, Raiders, Steelers

Interesting…Rams cut 4 picks but then added 4 UDFAs.

I think the “cut 4 picks” thing is a little deceptive, because, first of all, they had more picks than most, and adding extra 6th and 7th round picks does not mean you are going to add PLAYERS, especially if your team is already getting deeper. Plus 1 is a redshirt virtually assured to make the PS (Bryant). Rhaney I guess counts as making it cause he is on IR.

    Ostensible cuts in bold:

1 2 STL Greg Robinson OL
1 13 STL Aaron Donald DT
2 41 STL Lamarcus Joyner DB
3 75 STL Tre Mason RB
4 110 STL Mo Alexander DB
    6 188 STL E.J. Gaines CB
6 214 STL Garrett Gilbert QB
7 226 STL Mitchell Van Dyk OL
    7 241 STL C.B. Bryant FS
7 249 STL Michael Sam DE

7 250 STL Demetrius Rhaney OL

    The 4 2014 UDFAs are:

    Trey Watts
    Alex Bayer
    Ethan Westbrooks
    Marcus Roberson

    The all-undrafted list.

Rams who are currently on the roster (which is not a sure bet right now) who were either UDFAs or waiver-wire claims or young veteran cuts (2-3 year pros) [just to be efficient, starters and key role players in bold…not that I don’t think people need to be told who’s a starter]:

    Austin Davis
    Benny Cunningham
    Trey Watts
    Chase Reynolds
    Corey Harkey
    Justice Cunningham
    Alex Bayer
    Joe Barksdale
    Tim Barnes
    Mike Person
    Ethan Westbrooks
    Ray Ray Armstrong
    Darren Bates
    Rodney McLeod
    Marcus Roberson
    Johnny Hekker
    Jake McQuade

    17, or 32%.

The Rams are building one hell of a football team. Hard to believe this team was 2-14 just 2 full seasons ago.

Those are huge acquisitions. Those guys round out this team and give it depth it hasn’t had for years. Corey Harkey quickly became an important backup at TE. Barksdale may be their most reliable offensive lineman at this point. Many of the others help fortify one of the best special teams units in the league. Cunningham and Watts finally give this team depth at RB. And, Westbrooks could replace someone like Hayes in the coming years.

Of those picks, Michael Sam is the only one with an uncertain future as Christian Bryant and Garrett Gilbert look to be PS guys barring any acquisitions.

Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
