On Nov. 24, 2015, NFL wide receiver Stedman Bailey was shot twice in the head as he and his cousin waited in a car outside of a friend’s house in South Florida. A short time later, he is already back in the gym working to get himself in shape for a chance to return to the NFL and to the game he loves.Stedman and I spent two days together in late January, during which time I followed his progress physically, emotionally and spiritually. He is determined to get back on the field no matter how tall the odds are stacked against him in that effort.
See Stedman’s story, through his own words, as he continues his journey in the face of adversity.
(Video shot and edited by Geoff Coyle for West Virginia Illustrated. Special thanks to Danny Fernandez and Brad DeSouza of Potential Church, Gary Sanchez of Xtreme Performance and Nicco Catalano.)

wvParticipantWell….I’m still mad at him. I’d
like to hear a little more from HIM
about why he was suspended (for the second time
i think?) and what really happened with
regard to that shooting.
I’m not much interested in how his
priorities are about “God” at this point, blah
blah blah.…yeah, I’m still irked..

“Son Of Virginia”
It was the morning of All Saint’s Day, ’98
When that old blind dog started roaming around the graveyard
Wouldn’t have bothered me so much
Were he not walking on his hind legs and smoking cigarsRecite my lineage and genealogy
You’ve got to know your history, son of Virginia
Everybody’s in the church believing they’re a sinner
And looking for a sign from the true son of VirginiaWhen the storm blew over we made our way
To the old hay wain to infiltrate the sarcophagus
By the dim light of a narrow window we saw
The God’s honest truth staring right back at usRecite your lineage and genealogy
You’ve got to know your history, son of Virginia
Everybody’s in the church believing they’re a sinner
And looking for a sign from the true son of VirginiaStare into the embers on the first of November
And remember you were born a true son of VirginiaI was thrown to the ground as my world broke asunder
Truly we are living in an age of wonder
Truly we are living in an age of wonderIt was the morning of All Saint’s Day, ’98
When that old blind dog started calling me associate
Wouldn’t have bothered me so much were it not for the fact
That was the truth of itRecite our lineage and genealogy
You’ve got to know your history,
Son of Virginia Stare into the embers on the first of November
And remember you were born a true son of VirginiaI was thrown to the ground as my world broke asunder
Truly we are living in an age of wonder
I wept like a child as the son rose above her

InvaderRamModeratorhe definitely messed up failing the second drug test. but as far as i know he did nothing wrong when he got shot in the head. he was at his local high school talking to students when it happened. now i don’t know if something happened before to precipitate that or if stedman was involved with that i don’t know. i hope not.

vHis recovering from two shots to his head is the bigger story IMO.
