    CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns will waive Johnny Manziel when the league year opens March 9 for repeated trangressions that have hurt and embarassed the team, league sources told cleveland.com.

    Browns Executive Vice President Sashi Brown made it clear in a statement Tuesday that the Browns are done with Johnny Manziel, who’s under investigation by Texas police and the NFL for possibly assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

    But league sources have told cleveland.com that he’s done. It’s over.

    “We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization,” Brown said in the statement. “His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”

    The Browns can’t waive or trade Manziel until the league year begins March 9 because they’ve already exercised the option of moving their salary cap space from this year into next year. Therefore, they don’t have the option of waiving him when the waiver period opens Feb. 8, a day after the Super Bowl.

    Police in Fort Worth and Dallas are investigating Manziel for possibly assaulting his ex-girlfriend early Saturday morning. The NFL is also investigating, since this is the second incident since Oct. 13, when he was involved in a roadway argument with Colleen Crowley.

    Manziel faces possible suspension by the NFL, but probably won’t be the Browns’ problem much longer.

    Manziel was not arrested by Avon, Ohio police for the Oct. 13 incident, and the NFL cleared him of any wrongdoing despite Crowley initially telling police that Manziel beat her and shoved her head into the glass of the car.

    Crowley, who was drunk at the time, later changed her story and said Manziel didn’t harm her. Now, Manziel is being accused a second time of possibly assaulting a female.

    Johnny Manziel has been anything but dependable since the Cleveland Browns selected him in the 2014 draft. Here is a look at the incidents that have gotten him to this point.

    Early Saturday morning, police in Fort Worth, Texas were called to an apartment building near Texas Christian University, where Crowley — who might now be his ex-girlfriend — is a student. Crowley’s name was not mentioned in the police report, just a 23-year-old female, so it’s unclear if she’s the woman involved.

    When police arrived, they couldn’t locate the caller but came across the 23-year-old woman who reported that she had been involved in a disturbance with Manziel in Dallas and possibly other locations. Although she was uncooperative, she managed to express to police that she was worried about Manziel — whom she described as her ex-boyfriend — which prompted Fort Worth police to search for him.

    When he didn’t answer calls to his cell phones, police searched the area in patrol cars and eventually an Air One helicopter to look for him. Ultimately, he was found to be safe and in no danger. But police in Fort Worth and Dallas are still “actively working” to determine if Manziel assaulted his ex-girlfriend.

    On Monday, police in both jurisdictions said there was nothing new to report.

    The NFL, which launches its own probes into domestic violence allegations, brought in investigator Lisa Friel to interview Manziel on Oct. 28 at the Browns facility in Berea regarding the Oct. 13 roadway argument with Crowley. Manziel was represented by NFLPA Heather McPhee.

    The NFL also interviewed Crowley and the Avon Police, and ultimately declined to issue any punishment.

    “Based on the information gathered, we have concluded that there is an insufficient basis on which to take disciplinary action,” the NFL said in a statement. “In all cases of this nature, our concern under the Personal Conduct Policy goes well beyond the issue of discipline, and we have made comprehensive professional resources available on a confidential basis.”

    Following that announcement — on the same day he was named the starter for the final six games of the season — Manziel issued a statement saying the league’s decision should put to rest any thoughts that he had hurt Crowley.

    “I appreciate the NFL’s diligence and discretion in reviewing a situation that was both personal and embarrassing,” Manziel said. “Colleen and I cooperated fully with the NFL’s process and completely support their goals of making sure that every family under their umbrella is safer and more secure.

    “I’m grateful that the review was so thorough and fair that there should be no question left in the public mind about what actually happened.”

    Manziel and Crowley remained together for a period of time after that, based on their tweets and Instagram posts.

    Again, it’s unclear if Crowley is the woman involved in this incident.

    Manziel’s publicist, Denise Michaels, declined comment. His agent, Erik Burkhardt, did not respond to a text and his lawyer and family friend, Brad Beckworth, has not returned a phone call.

    A source close to Manziel said friends have been worried about him for a period of months. One said he became a “train wreck” as the season wore on.

    Manziel, who spent 73 days in inpatient addiction treatment center last off-season, has been photographed frequently drinking alcohol over the past several months.

    There is a possibility, I suppose, that RGIII can get his shit together mentally. That he has been humbled, and now has the proper drive. It’s possible. I have no reason to think he HAS. I am just saying it’s possible. (Though even if he has, there is still the question of whether he can develop into an effective NFL QB)

    Manziel is an irredeemable head case. Like Phillips. No cure.

    In some measure, I feel pity for him the same way I did for Phillips. I mean, I don’t think head cases WANT to be head cases. They just are. And they are doomed to unhappiness. So, I’m sorry. But I don’t want him to bring his troubles to the Rams.

    EARTH CITY, Mo. — The Cleveland Browns made it abundantly clear Tuesday that their time employing quarterback Johnny Manziel will be over sooner rather than later.

    ESPN Browns reporter Pat McManamon offered confirmation from a league source that Cleveland will part ways with Manziel in March. The Browns could theoretically make the move as soon as Monday but will wait for salary-cap purposes.

    Sashi Brown, Cleveland’s executive vice president of football operations, released a statement that strongly indicated the Browns will not be retaining Manziel.

    “We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” the statement reads. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”

    Manziel’s latest run-in with the law — police were called for an alleged assault in Fort Worth, Texas, last weekend and Dallas and Fort Worth police are investigating along with the NFL — will have to play out before any team can legitimately look at whether to add Manziel.

    Still, the Los Angeles Rams have been connected to Manziel in the past and probably will be again moving forward.

    In fact, ESPN’s Ed Werder reported Tuesday that Manziel has told people close to him that the Rams are one of three teams, along with the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs, that have expressed interest in him.

    That alleged connection doesn’t lack validity though it’s far from certain. The Rams did extensive homework on Manziel leading up to the draft in 2014. That interest included private workouts and interviews.

    “He can throw the football, he’s got very good pocket awareness, he’s got eyes that remain very disciplined down field and when it’s time to go, he goes and he makes people miss,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said at the 2014 scouting combine. “He didn’t win the Heisman because he wasn’t a good football player. He’s fun to watch.”

    The Rams ultimately opted to use their two first-round picks on offensive tackle Greg Robinson and defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

    At the time, Fisher attempted to downplay the interest in Manziel, perhaps as a way to instill confidence in Sam Bradford, who has since been traded. But there were reports that the Rams at least briefly pondered trading back up for Manziel after taking Robinson and Donald.

    Of course, it’s now easy to dismiss potential interest given all that’s happened to Manziel in the time since. But as recently as Dec. 18, 2015, Fisher was singing Manziel’s praises before the Browns played Seattle in a game that could have mathematically kept the Rams in playoff contention.

    “I’ve always been a Johnny Manziel fan,” Fisher said then. “We had a private workout and had visits. I think he’s an NFL talent and he can win games.”

    But whether Fisher and the Rams view Manziel as a quarterback who can win games for them still seems like a bit of a reach. Any evaluation of Manziel’s fit now would have to begin with his off-field troubles. His inability to take responsibility and be reliable in Cleveland raises plenty of questions about whether he could do that anywhere, let alone in a larger market like Los Angeles where there would be a lot of eyes on his every move and plenty of temptation.

    Past that, the Rams would have to ask themselves whether Manziel would actually be an upgrade to their quarterback position. While the Rams duo of Nick Foles and Case Keenum combined to finish last in the league in most major passing categories, Keenum had some success at the end of the season and doesn’t come with any of the baggage Manziel does.

    Manziel isn’t exactly a proven commodity, either. In his time in Cleveland, he was 2-6 as the starter with his completion percentage, yards per attempt and touchdown-to-interception ratio all ranking in the bottom five of the league among 43 quarterbacks with at least 350 action plays over the past two years.

    The reality is Manziel has a lot to figure out on his own before teams, the Rams included, can really even consider bringing him on board.[

    ort Worth police have released a report about the incident involving Johnny Manziel and his ex-girlfriend that occurred last weekend.
    Officers were called to investigate the altercation between the two early in the morning on last Saturday.
    In the report released on Feb. 4, Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, told police she met up with Manziel on Friday, Jan. 29 at Hotel Zaza in Uptown Dallas. She told them Manziel acted as if he were on some kind of drugs, but said he wasn’t intoxicated.
    Crowley told police Manziel struck her several times, including a strike to her left ear. She said she and Manziel left the hotel and got in her vehicle. Crowley said Manziel told her he was going to drive her to her Fort Worth home because he didn’t want her to drive while intoxicated.
    Crowley told officers Manziel shouted angrily and hit her several more times during the drive from Dallas to Fort Worth.
    Once at her apartment, Crowley ran to a neighbor’s house and Manziel left the area.
    According to Fort Worth police corporal Tracey Knight, officers did not arrest Manziel, but “an information report was completed regarding an altercation between Manziel and his girlfriend.”
    NBC 5 has reached out to Manziel and his representatives for comment, but have not heard back yet.

    Initial Incident Statement From Fort Worth Police:
    On Saturday afternoon, Knight released the following statement about the incident:
    “At approximately 2 a.m. on January 30, 2016, patrol officers were dispatched to 2101 Park Hill Drive (The Berkeley Apartments) in reference to a report of a possible assault.
    Upon arrival, officers did not locate the caller, but did make contact with a 23 year old female who stated that she was involved in a disturbance with her ex-boyfriend (23 year old male suspect) earlier in the evening in Dallas. The preliminary investigation determined that a possible assault had occurred in that jurisdiction or multiple jurisdictions. The complainant was uncooperative with officers on scene, and they were unable to locate a crime scene within the Fort Worth jurisdiction, however, our officers prepared a report nonetheless, and that information was forwarded to detectives for further investigation.
    The Dallas Police Department was notified of a possible disturbance, so any questions regarding their jurisdiction should be submitted to DPD.
    The complainant also advised our officers of concerns that she had regarding the well-being of her ex-boyfriend. In an effort to follow-up on this, Fort Worth officers attempted to locate him, by calling cell phone numbers associated with him, checking locations within our jurisdiction, and searching the area with the assistance of our Air One Unit. It was later determined by officers that the ex-boyfriend was safe and in no danger. The Fort Worth Police Department is actively working with Dallas PD to determine if a criminal offense occurred.”
    While the report does not mention Manziel by name, the Fort Worth Police Department’s tweet about the incident does:

    Manziel has been seen with friends in Dallas in recent weeks.
    On January 20, Manziel was at Trees, a club in Deep Ellum, with Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons, Stars center Tyler Seguin, and Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard attending a Mike Stud concert.
    “Originally there was only suppose to be eight people, but it ended up being 20 to 25 people who were coming and going,” said Trees bouncer Chris Dias. “Everyone was just being cool up there and enjoying themselves. There were no issues when he (Manziel) was here.”
    The NFL and the Cleveland Browns are aware of the situation. The league says it’s looking into it.
    The Dallas Police Department said it has been notified by the Fort Worth Police Department of a possible offense that may have occurred within the Dallas city limits. According to Sr. Cpl. Tramese Andrews Dallas police are in the preliminary stages of the investigation and have no further information.

    rik Burkhardt, who served as the agent for Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, announced Friday he’s ending his professional relationship with the 23-year-old amid Manziel’s continued off-field issues.

    Adam Schefter of ESPN.com first reported the news. Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk passed along the full statement from Burkhardt:

    It is with deep regret that, after several emotional and very personal discussions with his family, his doctors, and my client himself, I have made the decision to terminate my professional relationship with Johnny Manziel. Though I will remain a friend and Johnny supporter, and he knows I have worked tirelessly to arrange a number of professional options for him to continue to pursue, it has become painfully obvious that his future rests solely in his own hands. His family and I have gone to great lengths to outline the steps we feel he must take to get his life in order. Accountability is the foundation of any relationship, and without it the function of my work is counterproductive. I truly wish the best for Johnny and sincerely hope he can, and will, find the kind of peace and happiness he deserves.

    The decision comes after the latest alleged incident between Manziel and ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley.

    Rebecca Lopez of WFAA News 8 reported Thursday that Crowley claims the NFL player struck her and told her “shut up or I’ll kill us both” during an encounter last week.

    Manziel denied those allegations to TMZ Sports. Tom Withers of the Associated Press noted both Texas police departments involved in the investigation closed the case of possible assault without filing charges.

    The quarterback has dealt with a long line of off-field problems since the Browns drafted him in the first round in 2014. Pat McManamon of ESPN.com (via Will Brinson of CBSSports.com) noted the team is likely to release him once the new league year begins next month.

    Manziel has failed to make much of an impression on the field for Cleveland. He’s appeared in 14 games over his first two seasons and accumulated a lackluster 74.4 passer rating with seven passing touchdowns and seven interceptions.

    The former Heisman Trophy winner has always sported the necessary talent to have success. The questions surround his dedication when it comes to playing the sport’s most important position. His inability to stay out of the negative spotlight is obviously a worrisome trend.

    CLEVELAND (AP) With Johnny Manziel’s professional career in doubt and his personal life crumbling, his father fears for his safety.

    The troubled quarterback was under investigation by two police departments following allegations that he hit his former girlfriend last weekend in Texas. Manziel will be released by the Cleveland Browns next month after two tumultuous seasons.

    “I truly believe if they can’t get him help, he won’t live to see his 24th birthday,” Paul Manziel told The Dallas Morning News.

    Manziel’s father said the family has made two unsuccessful attempts in the past week to get the player into a rehab clinic.

    Manziel agreed to go to the Enterhealth Ranch addiction facility in Van Alstyne, Texas, but he would not stay, Paul Manziel told the Morning News. He tried to have his son admitted Tuesday to Carrollton Springs Hospital, but Manziel was allowed to leave. Paul Manziel said he told a Denton County Sheriff officer he believed his son to be suicidal.

    Paul Manziel did not immediately return a phone message left by The Associated Press.

    The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, who entered the NFL with a party-boy reputation, spent 73 days last winter in a Pennsylvania treatment center specializing in care for alcohol and drug dependency.

    The disturbing portrait of Manziel comes as his agent dropped the 23-year-old quarterback as a client Friday.

    Erik Burkhardt said that with “deep regret” he has ended the business relationship. He added that he made his decision after “several emotional and very personal discussions with his family, his doctors, and my client himself.”

    “Though I will remain a friend and Johnny supporter, and he knows I have worked tirelessly to arrange a number of professional options for him to continue to pursue, it has become painfully obvious that his future rests solely in his own hands,” the agent said in a statement.

    “His family and I have gone to great lengths to outline the steps we feel he must take to get his life in order.     Manziel was under police investigation for allegedly hitting ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. She told police the former Texas A&M star struck her “several times” at a Dallas hotel and later when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth. The police departments in both cities said Thursday their investigations are closed.

    Burkhardt isn’t the first to cut business ties with Manziel. LeBron James’ marketing agency ended its association with him last month. The Cleveland Cavaliers star did not want to discuss Manziel following a morning shootaround.

    “I’ve already voiced my opinion on his situation,” James said. “I’m not going to do it again. I think that’s the last thing I need to be talking about is his incidents. That doesn’t make it any better. I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened, so who am I to say he was right or he was wrong? I wasn’t there.”

    On Tuesday, the Browns released a strong statement in which the team indicated it will release Manziel as early as March 9, when the league begins its new calendar year.

    Also, the league is looking into whether Manziel violated its personal-conduct policy. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday the inquiry is “ongoing.” Manziel was cleared of any wrongdoing last year after he and Crowley got into a heated roadside argument near the player’s home.

    On Friday, Manziel’s agent Erik Burkhardt also voiced concern for Manziel and announced that he is terminating their professional relationship.

    The family first tried Saturday afternoon to get Manziel, 23, to agree to go to the Enterhealth Ranch addiction facility in Van Alstyne, but he would not stay. That attempt came the day after Manziel’s former girlfriend alleged in a police report that he hit her repeatedly at a Dallas hotel and while driving her home to Fort Worth on Jan. 29. A public information officer from the Denton County Sheriff’s office said it has no record of Manziel coming into contact with an officer. Carrollton Springs is a 45-bed psychiatric and chemical dependency hospital in Carrollton, providing inpatient and outpatient treatment to adults suffering from mental illness and/or addiction, according to its website.

    Johnny Manziel, who is from Tyler and Kerrville, Texas, has spent the last several weeks in Dallas. The former Texas A&M quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has been seen out, including at Wednesday night’s Mavericks game.

    Colleen Crowley, Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, said Manziel acted like he was on drugs but not intoxicated during the Jan. 29 incident, according to the police report.

    Report: Browns lied about Manziel concussion to cover up his drinking

    In a report on the league’s own network, the Browns have been accused of lying about Johnny Manziel having a concussion in an effort to cover up that the real problem with Manziel was showing up to work drunk.

    “Johnny Manziel, going into what would have been a start late in the season, showed up drunk at practice on a Wednesday. The Browns lied and said he was in the concussion protocol. Let me repeat that: The Browns lied, to try to protect, and I would argue enable, this irresponsible and very troubled young man,” Mike Silver said on the air on NFL Network.

    As PFT pointed out at the time, there’s always been something very fishy about Manziel’s Week 17 concussion diagnosis. On Monday of the last week of the season, then-Browns coach Mike Pettine said he planned to talk to Manziel about a video that appeared to show him drinking alcohol and partying. At that time, there were no reports that Manziel being checked for a concussion.

    Then, when Manziel showed up to work on Wednesday, it was announced that he had a concussion and couldn’t play in that Sunday’s season finale. It was never explained why the Browns only diagnosed this concussion three days after it supposedly happened, and two days after Pettine said he was going to have a stern talk with Manziel about his off-field issues.

    If NFL Network’s report is correct, the NFL should come down hard on the Browns. The league has spent the last few years repeating, over and over again, that concussions are to be taken seriously. If the Browns are using bogus concussion diagnoses to avoid having to discuss players’ off-field problems, that would be an appalling misuse of the league’s injury reports.

    So while the Browns are done with Manziel, they may not be done paying the price for hitching their wagon to him. Cleveland could be facing league discipline for lying about a concussion.

    You do know I wasn’t advocating it. Or predicting it.

    I put that pic up solely for the icky shock value.

    I suppose I could have just put up a pick of a train wreck instead.

    Oh, yes. I was in no way thinking that you were in favor of it.

    I guess my point was that the icky shock value did its job. Seeing it just added one more dimension of opposition.
