vCan’t even claim that. SF is uglier. OK, we are the ugliest winning team on turf. We play on turf. We win with defense and running.

And like that, Gurley has it. Per ESPN Stats & Info, Todd Gurley now has the most rushing yards by a runner in 1st 4 starts since merger."Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick

be good, but not this year. I figured
he wouldnt really be a difference maker
until the second year after the surgery.Just….wow.
His vision is great. And he is so smooth
for a big guy. He doesn’t really remind
me of anyone.w
vNovember 1, 2015 at 5:36 pm #33311AgamemnonParticipantNovember 1, 2015 at 5:59 pm #33313InvaderRamModeratorhe reminds me of a lot of different running backs. in fact. i’d say there are bits of faulk, dickerson, and jackson in him.
and what’s really fun to think about is i don’t think he’s fully back yet. i think he’s lost some speed from college. but with time i’m thinking he gets that back. probably not until next year.
mostly i just feel priveleged that i get to root for him on this rams team. it’s the perfect marriage really.
but also i want to take some time and give a shout out to tavon austin. not just the yards and the touchdowns. but the down and dirty hustle plays he made this game and in previous games.
think about that. 2 of the most explosive players in all the nfl. they’re also taking a leadership role on this offense. it’s going to take some time. looks like it might not even happen this year. but i think the offense will ultimately be in good shape. just need to help those two guys out.
November 1, 2015 at 6:28 pm #33315InvaderRamModeratorone of the worst offenses in the nfl. yet they have 2 of the most explosive players on offense. a dominant running back. and a versatile double threat. both can score on you in an instant.

kinda funny when you think about it.

What if they add a veteran “no.1 WR” next year?

November 1, 2015 at 7:30 pm #33322InvaderRamModeratori think they have to. like i said on the gameday chat i prefer that it be through free agency. someone who can step in right away. obviously things will change between now and then, but there are guys like sanu and jeffery due for free agency next year. doesn’t even have to be someone of the caliber of a jeffery. just someone who is consistent.
November 1, 2015 at 7:33 pm #33323c1ramParticipantUgly for sure but those two or three bust outs a game are certainly entertaining and ultimately deadly.
The Gurley run was eerily reminiscent of AD’s 70+ plus run a couple of years ago ago at home. Almost like an entire defensive strategy breakdown in which once the first wall was passed a single safety was unfairly left to watch him hit the roadrunner dust right by him.
Of course Niner fans saying “we held him to 19-61 otherwise” miss the point. You get a guy like this in a run based offense and you have the typical 3-4 yd, then wait for the big one. Eventually, a single mistake brings about the death strike.

Yeah I’d prefer a vet FA who is more ‘turn key’…ready to go/doesn’t need to master his craft.

November 1, 2015 at 7:41 pm #33328wvParticipant“Rams opponents have made 16 redzone trips in 2015, and have come away with only five touchdowns. They have settled for 11 field goals, best total in the NFL.
According to press box statistics, S Mark Barron led the team in tackles with nine (six solo)…”Seems to me, aside from Gurley,
‘this’ is the story of the year — the redzone D.I think most of us are just ‘expecting’ opposing
offenses to bog down in the redzone nowadays.
They dont seem to be giving up any big
plays in the redzone. Janoris is playing well.
Barron is playing well. Greg Williams seems to have
figured out how what to do with them. Etc.w

vand what’s really crazy about that is they’ve done it against high caliber quarterbacks. in some cases, even hall of fame caliber quarterbacks.
November 1, 2015 at 7:53 pm #33331wvParticipantFisher: : “… yes we can run it, we’ll find a way to run it, and we have been doing that since Todd (Gurley) came aboard, but we converted one third down today. That just doesn’t get it done. So we obviously have some work to do. Pleased with the win, don’t misunderstand me. We came through healthy. We still have a lot of room for improvement.”
(On how RB Todd Gurley and WR Tavon Austin complement each other in the offense)
“Well, you have the reverse threat and then you have the quick screen, and we scored on that threat. It’s a simple read for Nick (Foles). If the box is loaded, go outside to Tavon and if they’re sitting outside and you’re worried about that, then we hand it off. So yes, it’s a good problem from an opposing defensive standpoint.”….
================================It is kinda fun to see the Rams have a
Mr Outside and Mr Inside.
Do any other teams have a combo quite
like this one?w
vNovember 1, 2015 at 8:08 pm #33333InvaderRamModeratori wonder what that peterson harvin combo was like for the vikings.

Well they have Cordarelle and AP,
now.
Would you rather have Cordarelle and AP
or Gurley and Tavon ?Maybe the Vikes will try some of that
inside/outside stuff themselves.
I believe Cordarelle had his biggest
day against the Rams last time
didnt he?w

November 1, 2015 at 8:37 pm #33341InvaderRamModeratornot sure. but he’s regressed since his rookie year. 3 total touches this season.
makes me that much happier they drafted austin. looking back on that draft. not sure there was a better pick for the rams.
November 1, 2015 at 8:51 pm #33343InvaderRamModeratorwell. i take that back. deandre hopkins would have been the best pick. but still. not bad.

You know last year, the D looked great in
those two shut-out games. And then the
Giants blew up the RamsD.Now, they’ve played two bad teams
and the D has again looked excellent —
but now they face what looks like a good team. So, it will be interesting to see
how the D does, on the road, against
the Purple-gang.w
vNovember 1, 2015 at 9:57 pm #33353InvaderRamModeratoryeah. in the past, you could see this defense. this team. having a letdown.
we’ll see how much they’ve learned. i’m banking that they’ve learned some things from last year.
but i could see that game also going the way of the washington game earlier this year. let’s hope that doesn’t happen. i do think this defense is more vulnerable to a great running back than a great quarterback. peterson has burned this defense a lot in the past. they did ok against bell this year, but it was his first game back from suspension.
then again. the rams didn’t have todd gurley. hopefully, he can do his part and keep the rams d off the field and fresh.
one other thing. on that 71 yard td today. i think most running backs run right. gurley sees the safety coming up anticipating a gurley going right. at the same time he sees the hole getting bigger to the left. cuts just as the safety commits. the safety realizes this and tries to cut back but slips. that kind of vision to me is extraordinary. he takes what most running backs would have taken for a 10-15 yard gain for a touchdown. untouched.
November 1, 2015 at 10:11 pm #33354NERamParticipantI liked it.
w
vMe too.
I like back to back wins, beating another team that we were supposed to beat, going 4-3, 3-0 in the division, a killer D that grudgingly gives up field goals, TA, and a rookie RB that is making the NFL stand up and take notice so early into what looks like is going to be a monstrous career.
I don’t like the the fact that these guys looked like they were intentionally trying to shoot themselves in the foot. At a loss trying to understand what can be done about the stupid penalties.
The 2 that irk me the most are blocking in the back, and hitting another player who is already out of bounds. I mean, c’mon, guys. Do you need a freaking anatomy lesson to fully understand what the backside of an opposing player looks like, and that your not supposed to block that body part. And if you’re getting ready to tackle somebody, you really honestly cant see that the other player is 2-3 yards off the field? Jeez you guys, your wins would come so much easier and more frequently if you can clean that crap up.
Don’t even want to talk about 3rd down failures…
OK, end of rant. Good, but ugly win. Yay.

Not really, but maybe a little like Bo Jackson.

vPeople all over the place, in the media and on fan boards, are having trouble comparing TG to anyone. To me that’s because he has some very unique qualities that we’re having some trouble (and fun) putting our (collective) finger on.
One key attribute: it;s a combo of things. He has very good lower body strength BUT is also very smooth in his lower body movements, to the point where sometimes you don’t notice he actually did anything. It is all very subtle. In fact we don’t really get the right camera angles to see the real effect IMO. This is combined with very good vision and “contact balance.” So the effect of him running on his big plays is that it just looks like the defenders didn’t tackle him right or took the wrong angle etc. He doesn’t run over guys, it’s like he runs through defenders who LOOK like they aren’t playing it right. Meanwhile of course it’s not the defenders it’s him.

I think I agree with everything here. I hadn’t thought of Bo Jackson. That may be the best straight comparison I’ve considered, but then I agree with what zn wrote here, and I don’t think Jackson had that quality. You can just see Gurley do this…thing…where he just makes guys miss, and it certainly isn’t the juking and spinning thing like Sanders, or the high-stepping like Payton. It’s like he jukes while continuing straight. He’s there, but he isn’t. It’s like he’s all greased up, or something. He just squirts through guys, as opposed to bowling them over. The guys is just a fish that nobody can get a good grip on. He will get 3 yards, then run into a wall, then suddenly…thwwwwt…he squirts forward and picks up 5 more yards in a dive.
I don’t know.
I do know that I love watching this guy play football, and I am glad glad glad he is on the Rams.
November 2, 2015 at 12:54 am #33374InvaderRamModeratorthere was one play in particular against the browns where he looked inside. the linebacker must have seen it cuz he moved over to clog the running lane. as soon as he committed, gurley cut back outside. just has this understanding of how to set up his blockers.
what strikes me the most is there’s no stop or start to him. he just kind of glides along until he decides to cut and then he just explodes through the hole. his cutting is very subtle like you say.
but he also has the power and lower body strength to shed tacklers when he needs to. his stiff arm is already very effective. i’ve seen him shed defensive linemen. and he’s already forcing defenses to gang tackle him. constantly churning his legs and gaining yards that aren’t even there.
he really is quickly becoming one of my favorite players of all time. he’s got it all. speed. quickness. brute strength. but also a graceful, elegant, and even subtle running style. he’s got immense power. preternatural vision. he’s smart. he’s also got this knack for making plays when the offense needs him to.
i always end up comparing him to the last two rams running backs of note. faulk and jackson. he’s got the strength and speed of jackson. but more importantly he’s got the vision and intelligence of marshall faulk.
but then yeah. there’s another element to him that i just can’t really pinpoint. he’s a special guy.
