Analysis
Strengths Rare blend of speed and power. Immense power in legs and shows balance through contact. Shreds arm tackles and has speed to house it. Very hard to tackle on an angle. Professional, decisive runner. Presses line of scrimmage to set up his cut-back runs. Gets downhill with knee bend and forward lean, staying small through the hole. Uses quick, tight steps to second level. Will sink and explode into tackler or side-step and jet, causing hesitation in downhill safeties with their approach. Converts “speed to power” between tackles and around corner. Rarely looks to run out of bounds and finishes his runs. Able to factor out of the backfield with soft hands and ability to adjust to throws. In 2014, churned out an amazing 61.9 percent of his rushing yardage after contact. Strong hands and carries ball tight to his body. Only three fumbles in 510 carries.

Weaknesses Missed three games in 2013 due to ankle injury and tore his ACL in 2014. Questions about whether he’ll return back to his play speed are a big concern. Vision is average. Still gaining feel as a zone runner. Too locked into looking for cutback lanes when play-side run is open. Can get better at setting up blockers in space. Average creativity in tight quarters. Patience and tempo as a runner can improve. Quick passing attack limited his protection opportunities but was very average when given the shot.

Bottom Line The rehab work and NFL Scouting Combine medicals will be extremely important for Gurley’s draft stock as teams assess his potential durability as an NFL running back. He played less than 40 percent of his team’s offensive snaps over the last three years, so there is plenty of tread still on the tires. Has the talent to be a top-five NFL running back, but ACL tear clouds the short-term picture.

ESPN said the Rams had Mariota 1 and Gurley 2. Regardless, if one of your top two guys is on the board at 10, you take him.

Unexpected pick. But, if he comes back healthy (read a report that it was a clean ACL tear meaning not a lot of other collateral damage) and he’s projected as the best back since Adrian Peterson then it makes sense. BPA and fits with the team identity.

Can get some damn fine Guards and centers in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. This draft is deep in interior lineman and I expect they will take at least one in the next two rounds and probably another by the end of the draft.

Glad we didn’t reach for Oline help.

Bet we come up with something Barksdale will agree to within the next couple of weeks. 🙂

I get excited when the Rams draft who they think is the Best Player Available.

No one buys a lame horse and expects great production. Why a young man who has been injured each of the past two seasons is considered different is a head scratcher. Mason ran well when finally given a chance. Does this mean when Gurley can play they platoon the position? A part time player first round pick? Another Tavon Austin-ish pick?

My view? Of those they only needed OL. With a strong running game they can make do at WR. I doubt there was a qb they could have gotten this year who is an improvement over Keenum. As for OL, it’s an OL deep draft.

It makes them better because (ideally) with a rotation of Gurley and Mason, they can run on anyone.

I expect any OL the Rams put on the field in week 1 will be better than any OL Seattle has had in the last 2 years, frankly, and Seattle could run on anyone. And I say that about the Rams even though I don’t know yet who all 5 on the starting OL will be.

#STLPick Todd Gurley. Had him as #2 player on board behind Mariota. Feel he’s best RB to come into NFL since AP. Will NOT rush him.

I think that Gurley has “pro bowl” potential. I don’t really feel that way about Mason and I like Mason a lot. Gurley is talented. How he fits in to the Rams? Can an NFL team ever have enough talented guys?

The OL – they have five picks left. I’m confident they’ll draft OL guys and a potential starter at G/RT. And, now is Barksdale more in play now? It wouldn’t surprise me if he re-signs early next week.

All the late speculation about Erick Flowers and then he goes a pick before the Rams at 9. I wonder if Gurley is still their pick if the Gnats pick somebody besides Flowers at 9?

The Gurley hype train is picking up steam. Word is he’s been getting a clean bill of health so if that one red flag is off the table, that is really the only thing holding him back from being a top 10 pick.

I could easily see the Rams taking him at 10, he’s a beast.

It would give Foles an elite running game to lean on and it would be the type of pick that fits Fisher’s M.O.

I’ll say this: I would not use a second or third rounder on one of these QBs right now.
