The #Rams are finalizing a trade to send veteran DL Michael Brockers to the #Lions, per sources.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Can confirm Brockers trade to Detroit, per source.

There are different types of restructures. Some automatic, some not. And w/ Brockers, it sounds like they could not agree to terms, which happens, and rather than cutting, found a familiar trade partner.

absolute class act for the Rams, a team captain and impact player and person. Lions getting a hell of a leader.

I could be utterly off base here, because it’s based on pure instinct and zero reporting, but this doesn’t feel like the Rams clearing cap just for the sake of it. We’ll see what the next day or two brings on the market.

Michael Brockers earned the “Good Guy” award from beat reporters this season, the first time that our beat gave out the PFWA award. The award was a representation of Brockers’ willingness to talk with and be available to reporters in 2020, but really since the Rams returned to LA

Brockers often demonstrated a selflessness in the locker room biting the bullet to talk with reporters win or lose, and he was a staple on the field. Like John Johnson, his presence will definitely be missed.

    Why the Rams traded Brockers

    * Jourdan Rodrigue, Rams beat writer: It’s my understanding that, as they worked to get under the cap over the last couple of days, the Rams simply could not reach an agreement on terms with Brockers and his agent as they tried to restructure his deal. Rather than cutting him, they found a viable trade partner in Holmes and the Detroit Lions.

The Rams made it clear that they were not going to stay at his previous number, a $6.5 million base salary in 2021. Because their other option was cutting him, that means the return on the trade will be very small.

Brockers is a team captain, an emotional and physical leader and a force within a defense that will help set a tone in Detroit under the new regime. That’s one reason why Holmes was probably happy to trade for him with minimal return — he has seen who Brockers is and what he brings, from the locker room to the field. At 30 years old last year, he started 15 games for the Rams and recorded five sacks while playing about 65-70 percent of defensive snaps.

What to make of Lions GM Brad Holmes’ two trades with his former team

    * Chris Burke, Lions beat writer: The new Lions regime has talked a lot about finding players they can trust to help them lay a foundation. Holmes had enough faith in Goff to hand him the reins for a bit. And, now, Brockers should be expected to step in as a core locker-room leader.

Holmes is still transitioning his front office, and he likely will be beyond April’s draft. It should come as no surprise, then, if he leans on ex-Rams that he knows well or ex-Saints who are familiar with first-year head coach Dan Campbell. Brockers fits a positional need, but his impact could reach beyond that.

Cutting Brockers was always seen as a possibility this offseason, with the Rams sitting way over the salary cap for the last two months. But by going the trade route, they actually save more money than they would have by cutting him.

According to Over The Cap, the Rams will save $6.17 million in cap space this year. If they had cut him before June 1, the savings would’ve been $4.67 million – a $1.5 million difference. Brockers’ cap hit was set to be $9.83 million in 2021, so the Rams will have to take on $3.67 million in dead money, but the net savings is still $6.17 million.

Brockers was a stud last season. I thought it was his best season.

    Sigh.

Yeah… he was one of my favorites. I have a bad feeling about this.

your secondary is only as good as your pass rush.

Brockers not big on sack totals, but he did provide consistent pressure on QBs and QB legal hits….

Detroit is becoming Ram central…… kind of like the George Allen of the Washington over the hill gang of the 70’s when he left LA……. only Detroit likes draft picks and Allen did not.

At least we didn’t have to give them a pick to clear the cap space.

Core locker room guy. He’s been with the team a good long while.

Good player, but not exceptional. I think his snaps are replaceable without losing much.

They had to either move or restructure MB to get under so they wouldn’t have to borrow too much from others. He was the final piece.

Listening to Rodrigue and Hammond. They confirm that with Brockers, they were not doing the normal restructure where you move money around. With Brockers, they asked for a cut. Brockers naturally turned it down. That discussion starts at about 30:30 in.
