Here’s the video everyone is talking about re McVay on Goff. It’s also the video that officially kicks off the Rams offseason smh.

January 17, 2021 at 12:59 pm #126962znModeratorSean McVay said Jared Goff is ‘the quarterback right now.’ Is that cause for concern?
Cameron DaSilva
With the way the Los Angeles Rams’ season ended and the way Jared Goff played all year, there’s been some recent speculation about whether No. 16 is truly the franchise quarterback. His thumb injury complicated things late in the season and with Sean McVay preferring to start a healthy John Wolford over a near-100% Goff, fans and analysts have questioned if the Rams might make a change next season.
McVay did nothing to diffuse the situation after the Rams’ loss to the Packers on Saturday afternoon, despite Goff playing well. To close out his press conference, McVay was asked very simply: “Is he your quarterback?”
“Yeah, he’s the quarterback right now,” McVay replied.
The “right now” part wasn’t perfectly clear, but regardless, McVay’s face and tone were telling. He typically elaborates on his answers, but he said nothing else after that as his media session ended. There were no further questions, nothing more from McVay, so we’re left to wonder why he appeared to add “right now” to his response.
Here’s the video of McVay’s response, from Rich Hammond of The Athletic.

Is there reason for concern in L.A. with regards to the quarterback situation? Is McVay fully committed to keeping Goff as his quarterback? Might they give Wolford a chance to compete next season?
Those are difficult questions to answer right now, and surely in McVay’s end-of-year press conference, he’ll try to set the record straight with a more definitive answer so fans and media members aren’t left to wonder what the future might hold at quarterback in Los Angeles.
But it’s worth noting that Mike Silver of NFL Network reported after the Rams’ playoff win over the Seahawks that things between Goff and McVay aren’t as perfect as they were two years ago when they made a run to the Super Bowl. And Goff was not happy with the coach’s decision to start Wolford over him against Seattle because he thought he was healthy enough to start; after all, he did play 58 snaps in that game in relief of Wolford.
Goff admitted he disagreed with McVay on the decision, but he didn’t see that as a negative.
“We are able to disagree. We’re two grown men who disagreed on the status of my thumb, it’s not the end of the world,” he said last week.
Goff has regressed significantly since that impressive season in 2018. He committed 17 turnovers in 15 starts during the regular season, which is far too many for a guy making $33.5 million per year. McVay even said at one point this season that “our quarterback’s got to take better care of the football.”
Now, all of this doesn’t mean the Rams are going to move on from Goff before next season. Cutting him is almost impossible due to his contract, which carries a dead cap charge of $65.5 million if he’s cut. In other words, it would cost the Rams $65.5 million for him not to play for them instead of $34.6 million to keep him.
Trading him is more feasible, as that would leave a dead cap charge of $22.4 million, with Los Angeles saving $12.4 million. But eating $22.4 million and then having to pay another quarterback isn’t exactly good business.
So in all likelihood, Goff will be back next season. And given that, there’s a very strong chance he’ll remain their starter. But McVay’s final words in Saturday’s press conference certainly cast some doubt about his confidence in Goff moving forward.
January 17, 2021 at 1:36 pm #126964nittany ramModeratorThere’s a lot of internet chatter about a possible trade for D. Watson. Steven A Smith said an unnamed source within the Rams organization said that was a possibility, but mostly all this is just hopeful fans talking.
My bet is Goff and Wolford will compete for the starting job in camp.
January 17, 2021 at 6:21 pm #126966PA RamParticipantYes, he just released a statement clarifying the comment. He said they are evaluating the QB position like they evaluate every position. It did not sound like a statement of support for Goff.
He MAY mean Wolford but that is very hard for me to believe. I think he watched Rodgers and just saw a whole other level if QB play. Goff had a very good game. He did not have an Aaron Rodgers game. He probably wonders if Goff is good enough–athletic enough, to take them all the way.
Like the Superbowl year, the defense was good enough to win the championship. The quarterback was not. Yes, the offensive line did not do a great job on protection and Goff seems to need a clean pocket most of the time, but it is more than that.
I think McVay wants a more athletic quarterback. There is only one Aaron Rodgers but I think he would be THRILLED to have a DeSean Watson.
He may just be frustrated by now. A trade may not be possible.
But this team has shown a willingness to give up draft picks. Would it take 3 number ones? A player? Who?
What about the cap?
It could be an interesting off-season.

Let’s hope none of that’s true PA. Cause in your scenario, during a game, McV would get qb envy to the point where disses on his own starter in public, after seeing for the first time what a qb of a caliber he could not hope obtain looks like in a game, even though the same McVay/Goff Rams played and beat Green Bay 3 years ago.
If Shanahan can win with Garapolo, then McVay can with with a much better qb like Goff.
What he should have been thinking is, how do I finetune my defense to the point where it can beat a guy like that in the playoffs.

January 17, 2021 at 6:41 pm #126968PA RamParticipantYeah, zn.
I’m just speculating on McVay’s thoughts. I have no idea. Plus he is probably pissed right now. I don’t think it is just one game with Goff that bothers him. I just wonder if the relationship is turning sour. In my mind, if Goff was healthy enough to play against the Seahawks he was healthy enough to start.
It sure feels like something is going on here.
But this is all easier said than done. Goff has a big contract and trading him may not be possible. I’m not sure where they go from here. They may not have many options.

Goff had 4 bad games and he was far from being the only factor that made those 4 games bad. The other 13 games with Goff they went 10-3. Goff held his own in the cold on the road against the #1 seed with a busted thumb, and that was (according to one source) while facing the most pressures any defense has put up against a McVay Rams offense.
If the coach can’t figure out how to settle his qb down, build around his strengths, and set him up to be more consistent–then (IMO) the problem is not the qb.

January 17, 2021 at 8:00 pm #126973HramParticipantI don’t think Goff really was healthy enough to play against the Seahawks except in an emergency. He threw a lot of wobbly wounded ducks.
Against the packers he was zinging the ball with a spiral. He looked a ton better.
Goff was not the problem yesterday at all. He threw into tight windows under pressure a couple of times. Just a fully health Donald probably makes that game even. GB made a ton of third downs.
January 17, 2021 at 9:57 pm #126974InvaderRamModeratorwe’ll just have to see. relationships will always have their ups and downs. i’m sure goff and mcvay are both disappointed.

I would build the line a little bit.
Get healthy. There are still many pieces in place. Akers and Jefferson are bright spots.

yeah. me personally. i would concentrate on making that oline right.
i have no idea what the rams organization has in mind. if i had to choose, i’d say that’s what their plan is.

a healthy goff behind a stronger oline would be good.
and i don’t think a complete overhaul is even necessary. plus they have some developmental prospects. i really like anchrum. i wonder if he could take over as center.

January 18, 2021 at 12:50 am #126992RamsMaineiacKeymasterI don’t think McVay is envious per se, but he knows what he has.
In looking at the eight QBs for teams that made this round of the playoffs, where would you put Goff? I think it would be hard to argue that Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes, and Brees aren’t in a completely different tier than Goff. At best you might say Allen, Mayfield and Jackson are even, but I’m not sure. Its just disappointing. The OL is clearly a huge priority, but I don’t see Goff ever reaching the level of those top QBs and we sure did dedicate that level of cap to the position.
All this said, we are stuck with him, and at a minimum I will concede he is better than average, so replacing him with an upgrade, given the lack of picks and cap is going to be impossible, so my opinion is moot.

i was thrilled with the mcvay hire, and am still a big mcvay fan, but have been less and less impressed with every passing game… while lefleur put on an offensive clinic this weekend, including easily freeing adams in the endzone using motion, mcvay tinkered with the wildcat instead of rolling goff out, running jets, throwing to akers, throwing to tight ends, etc., etc., etc.,
is mcvay simply a franchise qb away, a mobile franchise qb away (apparently), from regaining his genius? is he a franchise qb and an offensive player of the year away? does everything “need to be perfect” for him to succeed offensively?
22 offenses managed to score more points than mcvay’s gang in 2020, as in two thirds of the league, offenses that included the likes of foles, trubisky, mullens, beathard, fitzpatrick, tua, dalton, etc., and offenses that didn’t feature a qb that had been to 2 pro bowls – somehow their oc’s were able to squeeze more points out of them than mcvay could squeeze out of goff, why? how?
plus i’ve been pretty disappointed with mcvay’s recent comments regarding goff, they make mcvay look petty, and like a bad loser imo… if he thinks it’s time to go in a different direction at qb, if he thinks a different qb would give the rams a better chance at wins, fine, great, let’s do it, i’m all for it, but why say stuff like “I’m not ready to make any sort of statements with regards to any starting position” when asked about goff, stuff like “I’m not saying anything other than we’re evaluating that, and I think it’s important that you do that at every single spot.“<, why end the season like that, why head into the offseason making those sort of comments?
seems that he could have easily taken the high road and responded unequivocally that goff is the rams starting qb going forward, and that he supports goff, especially given how goff played through an injury in the postseason and exceeded most everyone’s expectations, and then do whatever he thinks needs to be done when the time comes, during the offseason or during camp, and explain his decisions then.
January 18, 2021 at 3:36 pm #127017znModeratorWyche: The Jared Goff-Sean McVay relationship ‘not great’ in L.A. right now
January 18, 2021 at 6:17 pm #127025znModeratorJared Goff-Sean McVay relationship needs ‘marriage counseling’ heading into offseason
Nick Shook
The Rams clawed their way to the Divisional Round before bowing out in a two-score loss to the Packers on Saturday, setting up Los Angeles for an interesting offseason at the game’s most important position.
Jared Goff managed to return from thumb surgery in time to enter the game in an emergency situation and help the Rams earn a wild-card win over Seattle in which its defense was the biggest winner. But Goff wasn’t able to keep the Rams in an offensive showdown with the Packers, who ran away with a 32-18 win. Goff finished the season with an adequate body of work, posting a final passing line of 3,952 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, a completion percentage of 67 and a 90 passer rating.
Goff was as effective as he was inconsistent, showing a tendency to start games the Rams ended up winning on a hot streak, and also beginning other contests with struggles typical of his worst days in the NFL. The Rams simply haven’t known which Goff they’d get on a consistent basis, leaving the door open for McVay to take a hard look at his team’s future at all positions — including under center.
McVay told reporters Saturday that Goff is “the quarterback right now,” which wasn’t exactly the most resounding endorsement, and then Sunday he would not implicitly state Goff is the QB going forward in L.A. NFL Network’s Steve Wyche reported Monday there’s more than just inconsistent performance at play with the quarterback situation for the Rams.
“We know John Wolford came in and they were excited about him when Jared Goff got hurt and the way he performed, and then he got hurt,” Wyche said. “So I think a lot of people are wondering if they’re going to bring in a veteran type of quarterback to push Jared Goff this offseason. Or at least have that threat there as a backup to see if they can elevate Goff.
“The people I’ve spoken to said basically at this moment the relationship with Goff and McVay: not great. They need marriage counseling is what one person said to me. I think this is something that they’re going to be able to work through, but there’s got to be some healing and that’s not just with Jared Goff’s injured thumb.”
McVay’s vague responses in Saturday’s aftermath seemed to indicate there was an underlying uncertainty about Goff’s standing that extended beyond his inconsistent play. He did credit Goff for his effort in returning to help the Rams win a playoff game, but noted he needs to meet with Goff to develop a shared understanding heading into an important offseason.
“For me to fully answer that, I think those are conversations that you have between (you and) your players first,” McVay said Sunday, when asked what he needs to feel confident in Goff going into 2021, via the team’s official site. “To be able to have the right plan of attack, I think you’ve got to be able to take a step back, evaluate the entirety of it. What I will say that you certainly can’t take away, that I mentioned to you guys each the last couple of weeks, (is that) for him to come back from a thumb surgery, do what he did in Seattle, do what he did yesterday, it’s a real credit to him, his competitiveness, his resilience. I think there’s a lot of positives from that.”
Positives also emerged from the brief performance of backup John Wolford, who was called into action in Week 17 following Goff’s thumb injury and did enough to get the Rams to the postseason with a regular season-ending win. McVay was unusually optimistic and encouraging when it came to what he saw from his backup in the lead-up to Los Angeles’ wild-card meeting with Seattle, but was robbed of a full showing after an early neck injury ended his day.
Wolford’s existence could be enough to push Goff, one might think, but a third roster spot occupied by someone other than Blake Bortles could prove more effective in pushing the former No. 1 overall pick. After all, that type of draft selection brings with it expectations of a premier passer, not just an adequate one, and with a top-ranked defense essentially being wasted by an offense that didn’t match its performance, it’s time for McVay to search for ways to improve.
“I’d say, I think as you grow, as you continue to learn, that’s just where we’re at,” McVay said, when asked why he might feel a need for a quarterback competition in 2021. “I’m not saying anything other than we’re evaluating that right now. I think it’s important that you do that at every single spot and no position is excluded from that conversation.”
The Rams are now free to join their division rival Seahawks in Cabo, if they so desire, but they have to feel as if their season ended prematurely with such a stellar group on one side of the ball. McVay has plenty of time to work with general manager Les Snead on a plan of attack for 2021.

they can work through this. i don’t sense anything irreparable. and i don’t think blaming one or the other is productive.
neither guy seems like the type where ego will get in the way. so i remain positive. at least for now.
my suspicion? mcvay wants to go conservative. goff wants to air it out a little bit. that’s just a suspicion. no evidence to prove it. hopefully, in the offseason they can iron it out and get this offense back in order.
gotta get that oline better though.

I hope he doesn’t lose Goff.
