Ick.
Losing Hill was not good, Dallas pressured Goff and stopped the run, Rams D did not return the favor
Okay…next game…

Season is over. We are not beating the 9ers next week, and the Vikings are not losing two straight home games either.

December 15, 2019 at 10:42 pm #109395wvParticipantDallas has been waitng for that game since the playoffs last year.
Made the Cowboys look like the Ravens.
Can they finish with a winning record at least?

vDecember 15, 2019 at 11:01 pm #109396Eternal RamnationParticipantI can understand how the offense struggled but that defense was pathetic. Just the body language was a team that didn’t want to be there in. This team is supposed to be mentally tough but all I saw was weakness, they weren’t competitive.I haven’t missed a Rams game in probably 10years but damn this shit is not fun anymore.

Well fwiw here’s what I saw. When a team can attack the Rams OL the offense stalls out, and when that happens, the Rams D faces being physically pounded by the offense.
So the Rams do better against teams that are weak at bringing pressure (Seattle) and not so well against teams that are tops at bringing pressure (Dallas, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, SF, and last year Chicago).
Negate the Rams offense through pressure and then pound the Rams D from behind a lead.
I don’t think it has anything to do with weakness, myself. It’s just being overmatched in certain match-ups. The fix believe it or not is the OL. Keep building the OL toward one that can handle pressure, and then that whole dynamic — offense stalls, defense gets blood pounded — is not the same kind of problem.
December 16, 2019 at 12:59 am #109403Eternal RamnationParticipantNaw ZN the Rams held the 9ers to under 100yards rushing on 41 attempts they still got pounded but they were competitive. This was a complete defensive collapse we saw before in Bucs and Ravens games. What we saw today was half assed arm tackles from none less than Aaron Donald and Ramsey doing his Peters impersonations in run support. Weddle was a nonshow Rapp and Littleton played tough but Matthews Donald Brockers Fowler Gaines and Seabass were not competitive from the first drive.
December 16, 2019 at 10:06 am #109409ZooeyModeratorYeah, I don’t think the collapses we have seen on defense have to do with the OL. Plenty of good defenses perform well even when the offense is terrible. I do think the OL has a lot to do with the Rams struggles on offense this year, but the defense is inexplicable to me. Some games they have just looked unable to stop the opponent. A defense as talented as this one should not be giving up 4 TDs or more in a game every other week. I don’t know why they do.

Sadness
December 16, 2019 at 3:57 pm #109422joemadParticipant14-7 game midway through the 2nd qtr and the RAMS special teams pinned Dallas on the 3………
then the Cowboys run game just avalanche the Rams defense…..Rams could not stop it….to me, those are the worst defeats to watch…..
And even before the Rams had to play catch up with a pass happy offense, the Rams had no ability to move the ball on the ground against Doomsday ….it was like Randy White and Harvey Martin suited up to play yesterday….
no bueno.

McVay on that:
“The expectation and the confidence that I do have in our players and in our team to be able to execute and just do the fundamental things that you have to be able to do to win in this league, we really just didn’t do. That’s not the norm for us. … Defensively, not tackling, not maintaining some of our gap integrity, playing our leverages right in coverage. Those are things that we pretty much, for the most part, done a really nice job of. We didn’t do that yesterday. … Just not finishing some of the plays and then offensively, a lot of the same. Not attacking some of the blocks the way that we had talked about, not just making standard throws and making the catches, creating some separation. A lot of the things that are really just instrumental from a fundamentals and techniques standpoint to be able to play good football, we didn’t really do and didn’t give ourselves a chance to be in that game as a result of that.”
December 17, 2019 at 10:43 am #109437wvParticipantWell, sometimes the other team just plays lights out. Dallas is talented and they played awesome ball. They can beat anyone when they play like that.
As far as the Rams, we know what their fatal-flaw is. The defense may have some weird mystery games now and then, but we know where the problem really is.
Can they fix the OLine next year?

vFWIW someone on twitter said that Phillips’ defense needs one of those big, immovable NTs. He said that’s what he had in other places where his defense was dominant.

Game 14 review …
So I think we’ve now seen where we’re weak “for certain” and why we’ve been having issues …
The pattern I’m seeing and that has been mentioned on the board now is that we cannot function as a team with pressure up the middle. So larger angrier units disrupt every part of our offense and unless our defense comes through big time we will lose those games.
Also? Our smaller D line can get manhandled by bigger O lines. Zeke is an amazing runner and most other backs could not have torn us up like he did, but the truth is that he exists in the NFC so we better have an answer for him.As always, I wait until the dismay leaves before writing these up. I did turn this one off in the 3rd quarter. But I will thank garbage time points from Goff, Kupp, and Higbee for keeping my fantasy season alive.
The Great
1) Our 6th CB came in and held his own, that gives me goosebumps about our security at the position.
2) Regardless of score, Higbee has broken out … 3 100 yard games in a row. Wow. That changes a lot. We need a 3rd TE that can play from this next draft (and there will be some available) so that we can consistently run 2 TE sets …
The Good
3) Bobby Evans. Just overall. That get gives us wiggle room with Havenstein in the offseason.
4) The TD pass to Gurley was a tough throw.
5) Knowing exactly what the problems that are most vital to fix are. I’ll take that for the offseason.
6) Having a terrible year and still being in playoff striking distance.
The Bad
7) You cannot miss Dak and give him another shot to throw the football when you have him dead to rights.
8) You have to challenge that PI call.
9) Playcalling. No jet sweeps, nothing to loosen the center of the defense. No deep shots. Why?
10) Personnel grouping. Why are we going 11 this game?
The Ugly
11) Interior O line vs. Antwaun Woods. Pressure up the gut is really hard to manage and Goff has not been steady under pressure this season.
12) It almost looked like we threw the game. So many things were so different than previous weeks that I have no idea what was going on.
13) Getting run on. I hate it.
14) Marcus Peters making the pro bowl.
