What Minnesota’s Protests Are Revealing About Covid-19 Spread
<em.After George Floyd’s killing, experts warned that demonstrations could set off new waves of infections. But early testing in Minneapolis tells another story.
    https://www.wired.com/story/what-minnesotas-protests-are-revealing-about-covid-19-spread/

Dr. Monique Tello, clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School

we now have data showing that the COVID-19 infection rate among protesters has been remarkably low….A recent study of contact tracing for new infections showed that most transmissions occurred between people interacting indoors for 15 minutes or more. Analysis of 28 COVID-19 “superspreading events” around the globe revealed commonalities: all were indoors, and involved people without masks talking face-to-face, singing, or sharing a meal.

“For the most part, we’re not going to see a big increase [in cases] because people are wearing masks and they’re being held outside,” said Dr. Eric Bing, professor of global health at Southern Methodist University.

Dr. Philip Huang, the director of Dallas County Health and Human Services…it’s unlikely the protests alone caused Dallas County’s infections to skyrocket, Huang said.

, the National Bureau of Economic Research released a study that debunks the notion that the demonstrations would deliver a deluge of cases. Its authors found “no evidence that urban protests reignited COVID-19 case growth” in the 315 U.S. cities they surveyed. In part, this is because protesters were vigilant in wearing masks, the authors state.

Dr. Joseph Chang, chief medical officer at Parkland Health & Hospital System: ” When two people wear masks standing next to one another, the chance of transmissibility is less than 1%”.

Protests against systemic racism held in 300-plus U.S. cities following the death of George Floyd did not cause a significant increase in coronavirus infections, according to a team of economists who have published their findings in a 60-page paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research; these somewhat surprising results are supported by Covid-19 testing data in many populous cities where demonstrations were held.

Florida does extensive contact tracing to figure out where people who tested positive have been before they got sick. And the state’s health experts are finding a clear pattern — it’s not leading back to the outdoor protests; it’s leading to indoor places where young adults go to hang out and party.

Of the 3,200 people tested so far at the four popup sites across the metro, 1.8 percent have tested positive for Covid-19, says s Kristen Ehresmann, the Minnesota Department of Health director of infectious disease.. HealthPartners, one of the largest health care providers in Minnesota, also reported to the state that it had tested about 8,500 people who indicated that attendance at a mass gathering was the reason they wanted a test. Among them, 0.99 percent tested positive. These numbers have been one of the few pleasant surprises since the outbreak began, says Ehresmann. “Right now, with the data available to us, it appears there was very little transmission at protest events,” she says.

    The question remains though.

Define what is meant by “leftist/progressive.” Waterfield asked that a couple of times.

BT gave one try at it and I gave another. But…no one person is going to nail that.

I learn a lot from people giving that an effort.

The Rams have continued to keep season ticketholders informed of changes for 2020 season, including today’s ruling of lower seat closures. They are also offering a refund for season tickets, or opting to carry over any existing payments to 2021 should fans not want to

completely skip 2020, in hopes that they will be in a possible small group allowed at games pending local approval. Even fans who skip 2020 will receive STM benefits, per email sent to season ticketholders today. Rams are planning for “a number of different capacity scenarios.”

from U.S. coronavirus cases rise by nearly 50,000 in biggest one-day spike of pandemic

    https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2020-07-01/us-coronavirus-cases-rise-more-than-48-000-to-set-new-daily-record-reuters-tally

More than half of new U.S. cases each day come from Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, home to 30% of the country’s population. All four states plus 10 others saw new cases more than double in June.

The daily increase in new cases could reach 100,000 unless a nationwide push was made to tamp down the fast-spreading virus, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. Senate committee on Tuesday.

“We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk,” Fauci said.

The rise in cases is not just the result of more testing. Hospitalizations are also skyrocketing.

NFL teams would like to play two preseason games to get a read on their rosters and get ready for Week 1, though the NFLPA hasn’t signed off on that and is wondering if it’s wise to start mixing teams for games that don’t count in the standings.

The NFLPA has been vocal about the health and safety of their players, and not just publicly. The union will continue to discuss whether it’s safe to play any preseason games.

    Albert Breer@AlbertBreer
One thing lingering over the preseason sked is the need for an acclimation period. The NFL/NFLPA joint committee on health and safety recommended a 3-week ramp-up before helmets go on.

Teams report July 28. Three weeks from that is Aug. 18. Preseason Week 2 starts Aug. 20. (1/2)

Data shared to team docs in the aftermath of the 2011 lockout showed a significant league-wide uptick in Achilles and hamstring injuries. That’s what the committee is trying to avoid.

So it might not wind up being 3 weeks, but there will be an acclimation period. (2/2)

    from the wiki

    QAnon

QAnon[a] (/kjuːəˈnɒn/) is a far-right conspiracy theory detailing a supposed secret plot by an alleged “deep state” against U.S. President Donald Trump and his supporters. The theory began with an October 2017 post on the anonymous imageboard 4chan by someone using the name Q, who was presumably an American individual initially, but probably later became a group of people, claiming to have access to classified information involving the Trump administration and its opponents in the United States. Q has falsely accused many liberal Hollywood actors, Democratic politicians, and high-ranking officials of being members of an international child sex trafficking ring, and has claimed that Donald Trump feigned collusion with Russians in order to enlist Robert Mueller to join him in exposing the ring and preventing a coup d’état by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and George Soros. “Q” is a reference to the Q clearance used by the Department of Energy. QAnon believers commonly tag their social media posts with the hashtag #WWG1WGA, signifying the motto “Where We Go One, We Go All”.

NFL will do whatever trimming around the edges it can — training camp, preseason, etc — to avoid affecting its long-stated plan for a full season ahead. We’ll see..

If I’m not mistaken, if the college season is cancelled, technically any player could have then declared for the supplemental, even if they were not going to be eligible for this past draft (cough cough Trevor Lawrence)

I think the NFL KNOWS that this college season is fucked, and they are getting out ahead of a potential flood of college kids trying to get out early by just cancelling the supplemental draft.

Just a theory. The NFL will still probably happen. College ball…not so much.
