znModeratorOne way to gauge whether a team is pass heavy or run heavy is to look at what it does on early downs when games are still competitive. The Rams were more pass-heavy last year than all but three teams.

And that was mostly in line with what we saw the previous two seasons. In 2017, the Rams ranked fourth in pass frequency on early downs. In 2018, they were 13th.
McVay’s decision to be pass-heavy last season was the right one. The Rams ranked 11th in EPA per dropback on early downs and 27th in EPA per rush.

The Rams ranked 10th against the run last year. Football Outsiders uses a metric called adjusted line yards to measure defensive line play against the run, and Los Angeles was 16th.
In a strange quirk, the Rams struggled to stop the run when they were in nickel, but they were outstanding in dime.
The Rams need to get their linebacker situation figured out, but given the investment they made in their defensive line, they should have a solid run defense in 2020.
The Rams did an excellent job out of dime last season. They struggled when facing 12 personnel.
Opponents produced an explosive play (20 yards or more) on just 7.3 percent of their dropbacks against the Rams. Only three teams were better.

znModerator(W, we have to include links when we post articles. I put one in this time via edit.)
On the article. First off this idea that there are “riots” at crisis level in the USA is completely counterfactual nonsense.
There have been BLM protests in more than 700 towns and cities, many of them multiple times, with basically a few thousand protests. Pollsters have said there were anywhere from 15 M to 26 M people who participated. The vast majority of those were peaceful. And I mean the really BIG “vast.”
Calling all protests “riots” is bs. And acting like there’s this big national problem on “the streets” is hyperbolic nonsense.
Secondly the situation in Portland was this–a couple of square blocks downtown saw clashes between a few hundred dedicated militants and police. The damage? Graffiti. All through the rest of Portland peaceful protests continued. When the Feds came in, it escalated the situation, which led to more people, including groups like the Portland Moms, going there to protest the presence of the Feds.
Polls show the Feds being in Portland worked against Trump so as of today he is withdrawing them.

After my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland. They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland. Our local Oregon State Police officers will be downtown to protect Oregonians’ right to free speech and keep the peace. Let’s center the Black Lives Matter movement’s demands for racial justice and police accountability. It’s time for bold action to reform police practices.

Here's what NFL WRs say makes Jalen Ramsey a great corner…
Chargers WR Keenan Allen
“Absolutely irreplaceable. You can’t replace good talent. Not a lot of DBs are that tall and that fast. And he’s going to talk to you, and he’s cocky. You better be on your A-game because if you’re not, he’s going to let you know about it and he’s going to make plays,” Allen said.Jaguars WR D.J. Chark
“Anywhere you’re at on the field, he’s somewhere near ball-hawking,” Chark said. “He can sit at a depth and react quickly. You know you have to be physical at the catch because as soon as you catch it, you know a big corner is running through you. If you beat him at the line, the play is never over, so always have a Plan B.”Bears WR Allen Robinson
“He always plays with confidence. I think that’s the biggest thing. Even if you catch a ball or beat him one play, he’s always looking to make a play,” Robinson said. “I think he’s one of those corners who isn’t just trying to get. I mean, he’s not just trying to be in the right spot. He’s trying to make a play, he’s trying to do something to impact the game.”
znModeratorBucky Brooks@BuckyBrooks
Notice how CBs aren’t cracking the top of the market.. There’s a belief in coaching circles that it’s hard to find a legit “shutdown” CB. Many believe the pass rush impacts the game far more than coverage. That’s why the investment skews heavily toward pass rushers (DE and DT)Common theme… QBs, Pass rushers, OTs and playmakers.. Those are the guys who are getting paid in today’s game.

znModeratorThat stuff is fascinating.
znModeratorfrom https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/07/28/nfl-rams-secondary-2020-ranking-best/
No position group has undergone more changes for the Rams in the last three years than the secondary. Since the 2017 season, they’ve had 12 different players start for them at cornerback or safety, nine of which made at least 10 starts.
Among the players the Rams have moved on from include Trumaine Johnson, Lamarcus Joyner, Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and Kayvon Webster, while Eric Weddle retired this offseason. Now, the Rams are looking to Jalen Ramsey, Troy Hill, John Johnson and Taylor Rapp to lead the secondary in 2020, which is certainly a promising group of defenders.
But what is its ceiling? Could the Rams have one of the best secondaries in football this season? With Ramsey as the No. 1 cornerback and two quality starters at safety, the sky is the limit for Los Angeles. And that’s without even mentioning Hill, who was great as a No. 2 cornerback in the second half of last season.

znModeratorfrom https://ramblinfan.com/2020/07/27/will-la-rams-run-3-3-5-defensive-formations/
The analysts over at Football Outsiders had recently posted how NFL teams modified their defensive personnel groupings from the 2019 NFL season versus the 2018 NFL season. Their numbers show that dime defense (meaning, six defensive back sets) increased by 2.7 percent league-wide and the LA Rams were one of the league’s leaders with the use of a dime package 42 percent of the time. Let that sink in folks. The LA Rams ran defenses with six or more defensive backs 42 percent of the time in 2019.
The Rams defense ran their 3-4 base defense 34 percent of the time, good for the third-highest usage in the NFL. The team’s use of the dime package of 42 percent usage was good for the second-highest usage in the NFL. So what about that five defensive back nickel-package? The Rams saw fit to use that formation just 23 percent of the time, which was dead last, or the 32nd ranked usage in the NFL.

I’ve seen zero evidence anyone in the sports media is rooting for sports to be cancelled (for any reason besides participants’ safety). Then again, despite my journalism degree & 20 yrs in media, I STILL haven’t been looped into any alleged deep state efforts so what do I know…Don’t get me wrong: There are plenty of curmudgeons in the media – When I interned at a local news affiliate many moons ago, I asked a sports anchor for his advice. I think Wolford is a pretty decent backup, lots of teams around the league won’t have as ready an answer if anything happens to their QB1.P-squads are expanded and teams can protect four guys each week. I think protected guys will be a backup QB, a backup kicker, OL depth and maybe a WR or TE depending on how the numbers shake out there. And as for the rest of the practice squad, it’s great that it expanded because I think many in the Rams’ UDFA class have a lot of talent. I really like Brandon Polk, and Rozeboom is an ideal develop-in-house candidate.
I’d bet Anchrum ends up on the active roster at some point during the year. But for many rookies (and particularly the closer you get to the line of scrimmage) it just takes some time to adjust. I think Anchrum, if he doesn’t make the initial, could well be one of the protected PSquad players at minimum.

znModeratorMLB’s Worst Nightmare Is Here. They Should Have Seen It Coming
The league is grappling with a widespread COVID-19 outbreak on the Miami Marlins. And here we have it, the least surprising possible outcome of MLB’s decision to fly some 1,500 people around the country, from one coronavirus hotspot to another, buttressed by a hope and a prayer and instructions not to spit, in service of playing baseball: They have to stop playing baseball.
Four Marlins players had tested positive for COVID-19 by Sunday afternoon. As of Monday morning, that count was reportedly at least 11 players and two coaches. Miami’s scheduled Monday night home opener against the Orioles has been postponed.
But the Marlins played three games against the Phillies this weekend. Last week, they played two exhibition games in Atlanta against the Braves. It’s impossible to know how far the infected droplets sprayed. Both of the Braves’ primary catchers, Tyler Flowers and Travis d’Arnaud, missed the weekend series against the Mets after they exhibited COVID-19 symptoms. The Phillies players and coaches are waiting on test results; The Athletic reported that their entire visiting clubhouse staff has been quarantined. The Yankees-Phillies game on Monday has been postponed. The season is four days old.
This is a catastrophe. It’s also exactly what epidemiologists have been predicting for weeks.
Owners and players agreed this spring to eschew a “bubble” system—players didn’t want to leave their families and owners didn’t want to cede the revenue that comes from stadium sponsorships—and instead use the more dangerous plan of traveling from city to city. The parties also agreed to test players only every other day, returning results within 48 hours, which means a player could be carrying—and spreading—the virus for nearly four days before he knows about it.
(And MLB can’t even guarantee that insufficient frequency. Within the first few days of summer camp, at least four teams had to cancel workouts because they did not have test results back. The Angels had to delay practice because testers never showed up at all.)
Earlier this month, the league distributed an operations manual of more than 100 pages that laid out everything from the mechanics of placing a player on the injured list to the best way to use the bathroom on the team plane. But it does not address what level of COVID-19 spread would cancel a game or the season.
The Marlins players met before the game on Sunday to discuss their options. Miami manager Don Mattingly said that his team “never really considered not playing.”
Why did athletes, rather than infectious disease specialists, get to make that decision? Because there are no adults in the room. There never have been. Once the owners and the players stopped squabbling over the details and agreed to play, both sides had too much financial incentive to force through a season. Just look at the way the league and the union trumpet their COVID-19 test results every week, announcing the percentage of positive samples, rather than of people, tested. Those numbers are a sham. If someone tests negative three times and then positive the fourth, the first three aren’t a success story.
Commissioner Rob Manfred has not conducted an open interview with the press since February. His most recent media appearance came on Thursday, during the Yankees-Nationals season opener, when he smiled on ESPN while Alex Rodriguez, who is currently trying to buy the Mets, told him what a “tremendous job” he’s done.
All this looks even more reckless in a country that will soon eclipse 150,000 COVID-19 deaths. The Blue Jays will play their home games in Buffalo, because the Canadian government does not want people coming into the country from the United States. Meanwhile, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., both waived for professional sports teams local regulations that would have forced anyone who came into contact with anyone who tested positive to quarantine for 14 days. Over the weekend, while the Marlins were taking two out of three from the Phillies, Florida eclipsed New York as the state with the second-most COVID-19 cases.
League officials are reportedly planning emergency discussions for Monday afternoon. They could have scheduled them a month ago.
