Worth reiterating today: @NFL has expanded practice squad rosters to 16 this year, and that includes up to six spots that can be devoted to vested veterans – or players with four or more years of NFL service time.

    Andrew Siciliano@AndrewSiciliano
It’s one thing to make the 53-man roster at 4pm ET today, it’s another thing to make it to Monday. For every player claimed off the waiver wire for a fresh start, another player who thought he made the team gets cut. It’s a rough business.

#Rams CB Donte Deayon, whose energetic personality has been featured in Hard Knocks, will be waived today, source says. Possible addition to the practice squad if he clears.

Johnston had an uphill climb after such a significant knee injury/surgery his senior season at Baylor. A year on a practice squad to get his feet back under him and get those mental reps handled will probably be really good for him, though it doesn’t take away how tough today is

Charges filed against militia members traveling to Kenosha

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/04/politics/militia-members-kenosha/index.html

(CNN)Two members of the 417 Second Amendment Militia group from Missouri traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin, were arrested Thursday by federal officials and charged with illegally possessing a cache of weapons.

Michael M. Karmo and Cody E. Smith were separately charged and ordered to be temporarily detained until their bail hearings on September 8 at 10:30 a.m. in front of Magistrate Judge Stephen C. Dries.
Karmo, 40 and Smith, 33, were roommates for a month, worked together and were members of the 417 Second Amendment Militia, a pro-law enforcement group, according to the criminal complaint.
They traveled by car to Kenosha to “see for themselves” what was going on at the protests, attended a “Make America Great Again” rally and planned to go to Portland to “take action” if police were defunded, according to Karmo’s criminal complaint.

“Kenosha Police Department advised FBI that a law enforcement agency in Iowa had received a tip that Karmo and an unidentified male were in possession of firearms and traveling from Missouri to Kenosha, Wisconsin,” prosecutors said in a statement Thursday.
FBI agents found in their hotel room an Armory AR-15 rifle, a Mossberg 500 AB 12-Gauge shotgun, two handguns, a silencer, ammunition, body armor, a drone, a twisted cable survival saw, a dagger and other materials, prosecutors said. They each have criminal records and were not authorized to have any firearms or ammunition, prosecutors said.
Their criminal complaints contained screenshots of Karmo’s Facebook page where he posed in all black attire and in one photograph is allegedly holding a gun with a laser.
An attorney was not listed for Karmo, according to the online court file. A request for comment from Smith’s attorney Craig Albee was not returned on Friday.
If convicted they each face up to 10 years in prison for each charge.

Just a friendly reminder that players have to clear waivers before they can be brought back to the practice squad, so even if they are a strong *candidate* for the PS, nothing there is official until they are released, clear waivers and are re-signed with that designation.

on the Rams’ Sam Sloman decision, my understanding is that he really took off in the final week of work, demonstrating both accuracy and leg strength – especially when behind the 50. The team also liked his kickoff ability.

As I understand it, the Rams have gotten a few calls inquiring into the possibility of a Gerald Everett trade. But the Rams met them with a resounding “no” – no current plans to trade the tight end who really showed his potential last year. Everett becomes a UFA in 2021.

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
If the Rams can get consistency out of Everett, he probably will be worth more on the field to them than anything they could get in a trade now. But that’s also a substantial “if.

    Coach Sean McVay – September 3, 2020

(On an update on OLB Terrell Lewis)
“I don’t have any update on that.”

(On if he’s anticipating an update on Lewis’ return)
“Hoping that I’ll have an update in the next couple of days.”

(On how CB Troy Hill’s health)
“(CB) Troy (Hill) was good. He was good.”

(On how he feels training camp went and how he would evaluate camp during COVID and if he’d like to see a similar camp next season)
“That’s really not for me to talk about. I think the guys have done a great job handling the circumstances. I’ve been really pleased with them. They’ve done everything that we’ve asked. We’ve gotten a lot of really good evaluation opportunities. Under the circumstances though, we have done a lot of good things, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’ve got to continue to maximize every single ‘op’ that we have on the field until we get to that (September) 13th (game). We’ve got some tough decisions to make over these next couple of days, but fortunately with the expansion of the practice squad, a lot of these guys will still be able to be here. They’ve done a great job of making it tough on us. I’m just appreciative of the way that our guys have consistently worked throughout camp.”

(On what positions he thinks he’ll spend the most time on during roster cuts)
“I think they’re all so important. You know, I think that’s a real credit to our scouting staff, our coaches working in unison to be able to bring in a bunch of a quality college free agents. The draft picks have been great, signing some guys that hadn’t been here that are veterans. So, every position is something that’s very important. There are certain spots that maybe we have a little bit more experience at with guys that have played a lot of football, but there’s going to be a lot of good dialogue over this next day and a half or so.”

(On who grabbed his attention the most out of the drafted and undrafted rookies)
“I mean, really, I would say that they’ve all stood out in their own way on, on different days. I’ve mentioned when you look at (S Jordan) Fuller and (S Terrell) Burgess have done a great job throughout camp. I think (RB) Cam Akers and (WR) Van Jefferson have also done an excellent job. So, you know, those four in particular, have really stood out from that rookie class and those guys have continued to shine really throughout camp.”

(On if he is hopeful that a contract will get done for CB Jalen Ramsey)
    “We’ll see, we’ll see.”

(On where he will stand if a contract extension has not been reached for Ramsey going in to Week 1)
“He’s a very important player for us. We’re focused on getting ready, getting him ready for the football season and the (Dallas) Cowboys game.”

(On if he will be concerned if a contract has not been reached for Ramsey going into game one)
“No. He’s done a great job handling things. Those conversations, that (CB) Jalen (Ramsey) and I’ve had have been good and that’s where we’ll leave it.”

(On if the team is waiting for anything in particular in assessing Lewis)
“Yeah, it’s a unique situation, is what I would say. I’m probably not knowledgeable to be able to truly articulate, and there’s still a lot of things that we’ve got to get figured out. So, I’d rather be able to wait until I have the right information and accurate information to be able to give you guys what’s going on with him (OLB Terrell Lewis).”

(On if he is comfortable with the linebackers or if the team will search outside for upgrades this weekend)
“No. We feel comfortable. Those guys have done a nice job. The big thing for us is, you always are looking at if there’s any potential guys that do come available based on teams releasing them. So, it’s something that you feel good about the guys in house, but we’re always monitoring. If there’s a way that we feel like we can upgrade our roster, we’ll always pursue those options.”

(On how he feels about DL Aaron Donald’s mindset and the defense as a whole)
“I thought they’ve had a great camp. I love the way that we’re coming together and playing as a unit, understanding some of the intricacies of what we’re trying to get done, based on the call. But, we’ve got some work to be able to do, but I think the continuity is probably what he was speaking on and that’s something that I do feel really good about. I’ve been very pleased with them. I think the leaders, when you talk about ‘AD’ (DL Aaron Donald), he has done an excellent job. (DL Michael) Brockers, to be able to just consistently show up in and day out and inject those guys with the energy and enthusiasm to get it done. I’m looking forward to seeing that continue as we move forward.”

(On how he describes Donald’s durability)
“Second to none. He’s so unique. I mean, it seems like every single day, when you watch him closely, he does something that makes you say, ‘Holy, you know…’ He’s unique and he brings it every day. I think the best thing about Aaron is when your best player represents exactly what it looks like to compete with a relentless approach to every single snap that is so powerful. To be able to say, ‘Hey, watch what ‘AD’ does right here. Watch the way this guy brings it every single thing, everything that we do.’ That’s the epitome of what we’re looking for in guys and he’s demonstrated that to a ‘T’. I love him”

(On why Ramsey did not participate during the second half of practice and if it is because of his contract)
“No. he had participated earlier. We were working in some carded periods a little bit later on, where you’ll typically see some substitution. So, he was taking part in the earlier parts of practice, but we were kind of just spotting some of his reps.”

(Clarification on why OL Andrew Whitworth did not practice)
“Veteran day for him. Yep. He had gone a couple of days in a row in pads. So, we give the big fella one of those three days off.”

(On what was Whitworth’s message to the team during practice)
“He’s real passionate about all the right things. I’ll keep that in house, but it was just a challenge, based on where his heart is and kind of really listening to his teammates. A lot of the things that are going on and really just kind of trying to put some action in place, but kind of just keep that in-house. But it was a special, powerful message that I think was received very well from the guys.”

(On if he would like to see no preseason moving forward or for it to come back)
“I think the preseason is good. I think it’s a very helpful part of the evaluation process. I also have mentioned a bunch of times, I love being able to practice against other teams. I think that mixes up the monotony of camp. I think our guys have done a great job handling the parameters that we have in place. I think all things considered you would prefer (inaudible) to what we’ve all been accustomed to in previous years.”

(On if he feels good about where WR Cooper Kupp and RB Darrell Henderson Jr. are heading into Week 1)
“Yeah. I feel good about (WR) Cooper (Kupp). He was able to get out there today and he was full speed and he’s feeling great. (RB) Darrell (Henderson Jr.), we’re continuing to monitor. We’re optimistic, but, until he truly gets out there and is able to really open up and let it go full speed, be hard for me to say. But because of Cooper being out there today, he feels great. That was never really a true concern like we had talked about, but Darrell with an actual strain of that hamstring, that’s something that you’ve got to closely monitor.”

10 Observations from the Rams’ final 2020 training camp practice

    Stu Jackson
    .
    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-final-2020-training-camp-practice

    1) Wide receiver Cooper Kupp returned to practice today and went full-speed. McVay told local media after practice that Kupp “feels great” and that he was never concerned about Kupp’s availability for next week’s season-opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

    2) If McVay’s words to reporters weren’t strong enough of an indication, Kupp had a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch in the back corner of the endzone during 1-on-1 drills.

    3) While cornerback Troy Hill was in coverage on the aforementioned Kupp catch, he deserves credit for nearly coming away with an interception later in 1-on-1s on a Jared Goff pass intended for tight end Tyler Higbee.

    4) Today was a veteran rest day for left tackle Andrew Whitworth.

    5) No practice for running back Darrell Henderson Jr. today. Henderson participated during the team’s stretching warm-up period, then did some rehab work off to the side. McVay said after today’s practice that “we’re optimistic” about Henderson’s Week 1 status, “but until he truly gets out there and is able to really open up and let it go full speed, (it would) be hard for me to say.”

    6) For proper contact context for the Kupp catch and remaining observations, players wore helmets but no pads today.

    7) Wide receiver Josh Reynolds also had an outstanding over-the-shoulder, back-corner-of-the-endzone catch during 1-on-1 drills today.

    8) As successful as Reynolds and Kupp were during one-on-one drills, wide receiver Robert Woods arguably looked the sharpest, corralling three straight touchdown catches at one point in the segment.

    9) Rookie safety Jordan Fuller had a nice pass breakup on a Goff attempt intended for tight end Gerald Everett. Fuller has also created multiple takeaways in camp, so combined with his performance today, it wasn’t surprising to see McVay mention him as one of the rookies who has “continued to shine” in camp.

    10) Practice ended with various phases of special teams getting work in, including the field goal unit and practicing onside kicks.

McVay on OLB Terrell Lewis: “Hoping to have an update in the next couple of days.”

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Sean McVay says he does not have an update on rookie OLB Terrell Lewis, who he said yesterday was running through tests to check on a potential knee injury.

I wondered aloud if this situation w Lewis is like – is there swelling right now so you can’t get an accurate look at possible injury? Why is official diagnosis taking so long? McVay politely says it’s a “unique situation” and he wants to wait until he has a better grasp on it.

from Predicting Every Team’s Record for the 2020 NFL Season
    https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/09/02/every-team-season-record-predictions?ocid=uxbndlbing

    NFC WEST
    Seattle Seahawks: 12–4
    Los Angeles Rams: 11–5
    Arizona Cardinals: 9–7
    San Francisco 49ers: 8–8

Putting the 49ers at 8–8 doesn’t look that bad, until you realize it’s last place in this division. I am admittedly caught in the offseason trap that is the Cardinals. They are the trendiest team in football this offseason and my hope is that they finally have the personnel to upgrade their already substantial lead over the NFL in four-wide sets. Like the Ravens last year, Arizona might end up being the kind of outlier that is just too difficult to defend with the standard limitations of your NFL roster, which will help them conjure up some victories. I still like the 49ers; who doesn’t? However, plenty of teams have missed the playoffs after a damning Super Bowl loss like this one, and, as we saw in Seattle, Jacksonville, Chicago and any of the other places where excellent defenses emerged over the course of the last decade, it’s incredibly difficult to keep a unit like that together while playing at a high level.

    from https://newsplus24.com/when-are-nfl-roster-cuts-in-2020-deadline-date-rules-practice-squad-salary-more-to-know/

The good news for the players who get cut in 2020 is they will have more chances to land on the practice squads of either their own teams or others. The NFL agreed to expand practice squad rosters from 12 to 16 in 2020 to account for the possibility of positive COVID-19 tests throughout the season keeping players off the field.

Per the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, NFL teams in 2020 also will be able to expand their rosters to 55 players (48 active) on game day by temporarily promoting players from their practice squads.

10 Observations from the Rams’ Sept. 2 training camp practice

    Stu Jackson

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-rams-sept-2-training-camp-practice

    THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.

    1) Leonard Floyd back at practice: After a rest day on Tuesday, Floyd was back at practice today. He was active, too, registering a pass breakup on an attempt by quarterback Jared Goff during 11-on-11 work.

    2) Elsewhere at outside linebacker, rookie Terrell Lewis did not participate in practice for the second straight day. McVay provided an update on Lewis’ status prior to today’s practice, telling local media the team is “working through some things, trying to figure out what’s going on with his knee.” The team is doing additional tests, and McVay said he wanted to wait until those results come back before providing further details.

    3) With Lewis out, Jachai Polite got more opportunities in practice. Getting some work against the first team offense, he pressured Goff into an incompletion that ended a drive during 11-on-11 work.

    4) Inside linebacker Troy Reeder recorded his second takeaway of the week, making a one-handed interception off a tipped John Wolford pass. Yesterday, he had a fumble recovery.

    5) We saw flashbacks to last Saturday’s scrimmage, with Goff connecting with rookie wide receiver Van Jefferson for a deep completion, though this time it was deep down the right sideline instead of the left. This one also went for a touchdown.

    6) Really liked inside linebacker Micah Kiser’s energy today. It’s not the first time this series has drawn attention to his instincts, but that’s what stood out today. Anytime he made contact, you could hear the pads pop. He had a near interception during 7-on-7 drills, and during 11-on-11 work, he had back-to-back run stops against rookie running back Cam Akers inside the five to prevent the offense from scoring.

    7) While Goff’s completion to Jefferson was impressive, he also connected with wide receiver Robert Woods twice for touchdowns during 11-on-11 work. One of those completions included a one-handed grab over the middle by Woods for a catch-and-run score.

    8) After kickers were excluded from team drills yesterday, they came on for end-of-drive field goal attempts during situational 11-on-11 work.

    9) Creating competition: These remaining practices are all about maximizing competitive situations to evaluate the back-end of the roster ahead of Saturday’s 53-man deadline, and once again there was a good mix of first-team offense vs. second-team defense, second-team offense vs. first-team defense, etc.

    10) Speaking of the practice environment, there remains a continued emphasis on keeping players on their feet when tackling/making contact. The goal is obviously to keep players as healthy as possible while retaining an element of physicality heading into next week.
