Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey ranked every roster in the NFL ahead of the 2021 season and at No. 7 were the Rams, sandwiched between the sixth-ranked Packers and No. 8 Cowboys.

Linsey’s choice for the team’s biggest weakness is no surprise: inside linebacker. He expects it to be “one of the weaker groups across the league,” with no clear-cut starter at the position. Micah Kiser, Troy Reeder, Kenny Young, Travin Howard and Ernest Jones will all compete for snaps, but there’s no surefire starter among them.
And then there’s the Rams’ x-factor for 2021, which comes down to Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford, of course.
Since Sean McVay took over as the Rams’ head coach in 2017, Los Angeles has had the ninth-most efficient offense in the league, according to expected points added per play. Jared Goff flashed high-end play when things were running smoothly but struggled to improvise and elevate McVay’s offense. The Rams bet two first-round picks that Matthew Stafford can. Stafford graded in the 73rd percentile of qualifying quarterbacks when under pressure last season, while Goff finished in just the 14th percentile.

On the latest episode of the “Flying Coach” podcast with Peter Schrager, Rams coach Sean McVay shared what he looks for in a quarterback and what makes a great one.

“If you said, when do the really rare quarterbacks express themselves especially nowadays? It might be in the framework of the pocket when things go outside the rhythm of the play. Tom [Brady] does it differently than Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers are doing it, but all of which is beautiful and makes them elite at what they do,” McVay said. “You see some of the things and I’ve talked a lot about the excitement with Stafford. That’s one of the things I’m excited about him is, when it breaks down, getting through progressions, being able to move and manipulate, keep your eyes down the field.”

No don’t worry about that. If I post something in a Rams tweets thread, it’s fair game for a poster to decide naw I want that to be its own thread. I then just delete or move the bit I put in the tweets thread.
The issue with repeating is if someone already started a whole THREAD dedicated to the article and than someone just starts another identical thread. But in this case no one did that. Never be shy about posting new threads out of material that previously just showed up as bits in a “Rams tweets” thread. As I said that’s fair game.

Yeah and, as good as Williams is, in most scenarios he’s still going to be manned up vs. opponents’ WR2. Great anticipation, athleticism (can get higher than about anyone his height), etc.
Without all the restructuring that’s already been done maybe they’d be able to make a play for keeping him. But anything north of $8M/year seems impossible and I think $15M+ is very possible for him especially with the cap rising again. Just get the best you can from him this year, wish him well and take the 2023 3rd round comp.

The Rams do have a Super Bowl-ready roster, and now they have a quarterback with enough talent to lead it. They had to pay dearly to pick up Stafford while also dumping Jared Goff’s contract, and because they have such a star-laden team, that lack of depth could hurt them in future years. Their chance to win is right now. This year and next. That’s why the deal for Stafford was the most important swap this offseason.

The Rams don’t have the same quality of depth as the other top-five defensive lines in these rankings. But does it matter when they boast the single most disruptive force in the NFL? Aaron Donald’s 456 pressures over the past five seasons are 86 more than any other defender despite the fact that he saw a consistent barrage of double and triple teams. The attention he commands frees up other players to enjoy career years, as Dante Fowler Jr. and Leonard Floyd can attest. Los Angeles will have to replace Michael Brockers, whose 5,658 regular-season snaps since joining the Rams in 2012 rank ninth among all players at the position.

Earlier this month, NFL.com contributing columnist Adam Schein compiled his annual league bandwagons to jump on. Among his nine this year: Rams second-year running back Cam Akers.
“I am very high on the Rams this year, believing they will represent the NFC in the L.A. Super Bowl,” Schein wrote as part of his analysis. “Akers is a huge part of that. He became the guy at running back down the stretch last season, and it changed the Rams’ offense.”
