znModerator• The Rams are still re-arranging some of the responsibilities and titles for current and new staff, although McVay did confirm new hires in offensive coordinator Liam Coen, offensive assistant Greg Olson, quality control coach Jake Peetz, linebackers coach Chris Beake, assistant defensive line coach Skyler Jones (who was hired by defensive line coach Eric Henderson, whose contract was extended late last month) and assistant special teams coach Jeremy Springer (who was hired by special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis). As I understand things, Chris Shula may move to a defensive backs coaching role alongside Jonathan Cooley, which is interesting in that Shula has not previously coached the position and Cooley was blocked from joining Kevin O’Connell’s staff in Minnesota. A source also said that offensive assistant Zak Kromer, who took on a larger role with the offensive line this season, has recently drawn interest from Pittsburgh for an offensive position.
• As the corresponding move to Thomas Brown’s change to tight ends coach, he was tasked with hiring the new running backs coach. Brown did so this week, two sources told The Athletic, agreeing to terms with SMU/TCU assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples for the role. This hire is intriguing for a few reasons, not least because the Rams will return young, dynamic backs in Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson and Xavier Jones (all who have dealt with various injuries over the last two seasons), and have a decision to make about veteran back Sony Michel in free agency.
Further, some assistants present in Indianapolis raved about Samples’ coaching potential. Brown’s decision-making process was important because he interviewed for head coaching and offensive coordinator jobs during this cycle. When coaches do that, they begin the process of selecting possible future staff should they one day get into those roles. Brown’s hiring of Samples might point toward a longer-term partnership between the two.

There are some benefits to being “first” in the market when making new deals, including that others could then use the initial number as a baseline and the deal looks more team-friendly as time passes and others get done, but the Rams are less worried about that than getting it right as it specifically pertains to their own build..One well-placed source brought up Stafford’s own personality as an underrated, and large, factor in the negotiation process. Stafford won’t argue his own deal, obviously, but he does get the final say. Stafford has demonstrated a clear and public interest in how the Rams’ team-build works and functions as an interdependent ecosystem, and so he’ll be well-aware of what any financial savings on his contract could provide to other teammates as the Rams try to “run it back”. There’s also not a sense from the team that he’s personally about making financial demands, and while $45 million is a really popular number among quarterbacks/negotiators right now, his representation also has experience with structuring deals that help the team build (they previously did so for Drew Brees and the Saints)..The Rams will soon have official word from left tackle Andrew Whitworth about whether he’ll retire, and if he does, extending tackle Joe Noteboom may become their next priority after Stafford and Donald. They also want to extend outside linebacker Von Miller, for whom they traded in November, and receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who they signed just 10 days after acquiring Miller. Both players were crucial contributors down the backstretch of the season.Beckham’s situation is a little more complicated than Miller’s, however, because he tore his ACL in the Super Bowl. When the Rams initially signed him, two sources said that the team was interested in pursuing a longer-term relationship with him. That sentiment hasn’t changed on the Rams’ side, despite the injury.
Snead’s expectation is that Beckham won’t likely play a full 2022 season due to his rehab and recovery timeline, so the potential length and financial structure of any future contract would probably reflect that status (it could feature multiple years with a low cap hit in 2022, with active game incentives, for example). The Rams will get veteran receiver Robert Woods back into their position room by training camp (Woods tore his ACL in November, just a day after the Rams agreed to terms with Beckham). Importantly, the Rams did have a plan for Woods, Beckham, Triple Crown receiver Cooper Kupp and second-year receiver Van Jefferson to all play a role in the offense prior to Beckham’s injury. It’s an interesting “glass half-full” approach to see the midseason addition of a post-rehab Beckham as similar to what it was for the Rams in 2021 — although obviously under different circumstances.

I was actually at Sofi for the Super Bowl which I still find hard to believe.
What I think will always stick with me was how quickly I went from despair/shock to jubilation. It all seemed to happen so quickly.
On the last drive the Bengals got to midfield immediately and they had a 2nd and 1. At that point I was thinking that OT was likely. But after the throwaway on second down and the great stop by Donald on third down it was suddenly fourth and less than a yard.
When the Bengals lined up for the fourth down play I was shocked that they were in shotgun with the running back spread far. I just couldn’t believe they were telling the Rams that they were going to pass the ball. By the time I could process it, Donald made the play and we were about to be Super Bowl Champs. It was like a blur. Almost couldn’t believe it at first.

I think he was good in his own right. Plus, there’s the AD effect. Plus, there’s the fact that Henderson is a good coach. This year for example Robinson really did stand out–he really did take his game to another level.

And to top it all off, he gets into an NFC title game and then a superbowl, and in both cases, he makes the game clinching play on 4th down. Twice. In two games. Plus of course in the superbowl he made the 3rd and 1 play that set up the game clinching play, by literally pulling the runner back to prevent him from getting the 1st down.
We all know he is great, but…2 game clinching plays on 4th down to seal the win in both a title game then a superbowl?
If I wrote that as a script before the season, everyone would have said nice…but, your wish fulfillment scenario at the end there is a little far-fetched.

For some reason, for a long time, I was dismissive of him. I don’t know why. But he grew on me. Not just because he started loving the Rams. I would listen to his reasoning and he was always adding something to discussions.

Have to disagree! Ham and Blount were genuinely great players, up there with Greene and Lambert. Blount even survived the transition from the pre-rules changes secondary play that made them mostly assassins, to the new-rules secondary that transformed them into coverage backs. He thrived in the later world just as much as he did in the previous world.

With all due respect to Mean Joe Greene, Alan Page, Randy White, et. al… they aren’t in the same class as Aaron Donald. I watched all those guys too, and none of them were as dominant as AD. I get the reluctance to proclaim a player ‘the best ever’, and the desire to be respectful of the great ones of the past, but c’mon… It’s like saying Alaska is one of the biggest states in the US, cheetahs are one of the fastest cats, Zooey is one of the most annoying posters… At this point, saying he’s only *one* of the best despite the statistical and videographic evidence to the contrary is actually disrespectful to AD. But hey, if you want to risk adding another chip to those hyper-muscled shoulders, so be it. I’m sure the Rams wouldn’t mind the additional Super Bowl titles.
I get what you’re saying. But to me a lot of it is era-dependent. The game changed and DTs in the 60s and 70s were different animals. Merlin Olsen for example fit his era perfectly. I think in the 60s or 70s Donald would have been a linebacker.
Though I think one guy who would translate from the past to the present is Alan Page.
Which takes nothing away from him, obviously. All the players who know the game and praise Donald say he is a unique blend of quickness and strength. Plus a lot of what he is comes from harnessing his skills and working endlessly on his game. Even the most dedicated players in the 60s and 70s did not work on their games at that level and to that extent. In fact they couldn’t even if they wanted to.
