    Incredibly, signing Donald to this new contract actually creates cap space for the Rams in 2022. His cap hit is going from $26.75 million to $24 million on this reworked contract, a savings of $2.75 million. That’s based on the details from ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio, which have been used to update Donald’s contract on Over The Cap.

    What makes the savings possible is the fact that the Rams used two void years in 2025 and 2026 to spread out Donald’s cap hits. He’ll have a dead cap hit of $23.3 million in 2023 even though he won’t technically be on the roster.

    I don’t know, invader, I mean they have a window as long as Stafford can play. Having Donald at the same time, it’s not a window so much as an entire open barn door. But even without Donald, Stafford puts them in the running. I figure MS is good for another 3-4 years (though maybe that’s what you meant by the window closing…I tend to think of 3-4 years as being a more sustained thing than what the phrase “window closing” means, or that’s how I take it anyway).

    I am not sure they so much loaded up this year as they just did their off-season thing, which is basically to load up every year. Just a bit differently each time.

    Anyway. In terms of being Rams fans…this is the era we always dreamed of. More so than 99 because as great as that was, there were flaws in the system (Shaw, Zygmunt, consecutive years of bad personnel decision making. In fact I will say something that will cause all true Rams fans to scream in horror: a couple of months after the super bowl win, they draft Canidate, Shepherd, and St. Clair 1 2 3).

    Being a fan of the Rams is so freaking exciting… this offseason they have extended Stafford and AD plus signed Wagner and Robinson all coming off a Super Bowl win. It makes those years of awful awful football so worth it.

    There was another thread you were in which I can’t find now that made a lot of the same points. That thread was focused on 99 v. 21. You add good perspective on all that. I thought about adding my DV v. McV post above to that thread but then thought there was room for a whole thread about the entire issue, coach v. coach in their entirely, not just 99 v. 21, and that both threads could co-exist nicely. I can’t find it now though (?) or I would link it here.

    All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is returning to the Los Angeles Rams with a big raise that will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.

    The Rams reworked Donald’s deal to give him a $40 million raise over the last three years of his existing contract, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, making him the first non-quarterback to eclipse $30 million per season. The reworked deal brings the total value of Donald’s contract to $95 million over three years.

    The deal, which was negotiated by agent Todd France, includes $65 million guaranteed in the first two years of the contract and is structured in such a way that Donald can either retire or return for the 2024 season for an additional $30 million guaranteed, sources told Schefter.

    The reworked contract includes a no-trade clause, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

    Donald, 31, was taking his physical and is expected to sign the contract later Monday, sources told Schefter. The Rams begin their mandatory minicamp Tuesday.

    Donald had indicated on the “I Am Athlete” podcast last week that his return for the 2022 season was contingent on getting a new deal and that he would be “at peace” with his career if an agreement couldn’t be reached.

    The three-time Defensive Player of the Year sealed the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI when he pressured quarterback Joe Burrow into an errant throw on fourth down late in the fourth quarter.

    Donald had 12.5 sacks in the regular season and then followed that up with 3.5 more in the playoffs during the Rams’ run to the Super Bowl championship.

    In eight seasons, Donald has 98 sacks. He has six seasons with at least 10 sacks — the second most by a primary interior lineman since sacks became official in 1982, trailing only John Randle, who had nine such seasons.

    He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his NFL seasons and has been a first-time All-Pro selection seven times. He is one of three defensive players since the 1970 merger to earn a Pro Bowl selection in each of their first eight NFL seasons, alongside Hall of Famers Lawrence Taylor (10) and Derrick Thomas (9).

    I agree with everything you say, and especially the bit I quote.

    I re-watched the superbowl. The Bengals had a few big plays, as we know, but mostly, it was short passes to and runs up the middle that kept them on the field.

    I think those are both good points.

    There was a Rodrigue/Hammond broadcast recently that I posted here where an online defense guru type they had on the show talked about (among other things) how the Rams draft for defense. Since they have a few stars on defense, they can surround them with very specific types of role players and so take good advantage of lower round picks. The Rams big thing with Morris is the defense adjusting in-play to offensive sets. (Imagine the amount of trust you have to have in everyonse elese to play that way.) They have all these smart, football savvy lower round picks who might not have the speed but they can execute that defense.

    Wagner fits that to a T.

    I like Invader’s point about how maybe this will bring out more in Wagner, and I like WV’s point that this defense takes good advantage of football savvy.

    It’s also true that they can do that because they have some all-world stars who they know the offense always has to account for. So in a lot of ways they can use the stars t0 make the offense more “readable.”

    Muhammad Ali. Back in 1988, I was tending bar at the airport in Cleveland. I saw him sitting alone in the lobby, in front of the restaurant I was working at. I got up the nerve to shyly approach him and hopefully, just shake his hand.

    When I did, he offered to have me sit across from him, and then he started engaging me in conversation, asking me questions about myself. He wanted to know if I liked the job I had at the airport (I wore the unmistakable uniform of a tux shirt and bow tie… the class outfit for a bartender at a fancy restaurant), how long I worked there, etc. When I finally got a chance to ask HIM something, I just had to find out how he came up with the rope-a-dope when he fought George Foreman in Zaire. He gestured to me to lean forward towards him, almost conspiratorially, and said, “I was scared”. He then told me he was backing against the ropes to avoid getting the brunt of Foreman’s punches, because up until that point, he’d never been hit so hard in his life. He then saw that Foreman was getting worn out and frustrated with him backing against the ropes, and then Ali told me he just wanted to try to score points against him. He also said nobody was more surprised than he was when he managed to knock Foreman out. I told him he didn’t seem surprised at all when I watched the footage of the fight. He then told me, “I’m Muhammad Ali, I ain’t supposed to act surprised when I knock someone out!”

    At that point, I realized I had a job to get back to, and I shook his hand. And then asked me my name, and when I told him, he pulled out a Muslim tract, and signed it for me. I was absolutely amazed that somebody as famous as Muhammad Ali took the time and sat to talk with me as though we were old friends. A memory with my childhood hero I will always cherish, and will never forget!

    Wagner is in the early stages of his Rams tenure, but he already sees major differences between Seattle’s scheme and Los Angeles’ approach on defense.

    “I think every defense is built on speed, but I think the biggest thing was with Pete, we were super Cover 3. Everybody knew it was Cover 3 and we were in the mindset – maybe kind of cocky a little bit – that we were going to line up and we were going to make you beat us. We rarely made any checks. It was like, we’re gonna play deep, make you throw the ball short and we’re gonna rally and we’re gonna hit you and pay for it. No team is patient enough to work the ball down the field like that. They want to take shots, it’s an offensive-driven league. I would say that’s changed because there are so many more coaching staffs that had the Cover 3 so teams figured out ways to beat that Cover 3. This defense, we have a lot more coverages, we have a lot more checks, we have a lot more adjustments to certain things to get us out of those tough downs and I’m excited for that. I’m excited to learn that and be able to check that and again, it’s a chess game between the quarterbacks.”

    The Seahawks changed up their scheme a bit over the years as offenses adapted to their coverages, but they’re still primarily a Cover 3 defense. With the Rams, Wagner will obviously play a ton of hook zones dropping back into coverage, but he’ll also have opportunities to blitz, line up on the edge and cover the flats.

    The Rams use a ton of Cover 4, which also prevents big plays over the top, but they mix things up a good amount with their rushes, coverages and defensive fronts. That’s something Wagner is excited to delve into.
