McCutcheon, an undrafted rookie from Montana State, had a league-high 259 receiving yards in the preseasonLance McCutcheon was a long shot to make the Rams’ 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie wide receiver in a crowded position. Now his inspirational story will probably be told for many summers to come if he lives up to the potential he flashed in three standout preseason performances.
McCutcheon beat the odds Tuesday after officially making the Rams’ 53-man roster. McCutcheon, a Montana State product, had a league-high 259 receiving yards in the preseason and quickly made a name for himself after two memorable touchdowns against the Chargers in the preseason opener.
Quarterback Bryce Perkins didn’t face daunting odds, but he was also in a crowded position and needed another standout preseason to force the Rams to keep three quarterbacks for the second consecutive summer. But Perkins’ improvements as a pocket passer might have moved him to No. 2 on the depth chart to possibly surpass John Wolford as the backup behind starter Matthew Stafford.
The Rams are crowded at wide receiver, but they took one less than the eight many assumed after McCutcheon’s breakout performances and the team’s decision to carry only two tight ends. Jacob Harris, a former tight end who moved to wide receiver this year, was one of the surprise cuts. Second-year outside linebacker Chris Garrett was also waived by the team.
Inside linebacker Jake Hummel and outside linebacker Keir Thomas joined McCutcheon as undrafted rookies who made the Rams’ 53-man roster.

BAUMGARDNER Thomas played opposite Jermaine Johnson, at times, as an edge defender at Florida State last season. He also lined up inside some. There were times when FSU stood him up in the box and had him spy on the QB. He’s short, but has decent length and has OK get-off. If he can consistently use his natural leverage to his advantage, his effort/versatility gives him a shot.
RODRIGUE: Thomas was quietly a big get for the Rams as they recruited this year’s UDFA class. His inside-outside ability is especially something they’ve been looking for in a developmental player since Morgan Fox departed in free agency prior to last season.
OLB Keir Thomas, Florida State
Played six seasons at South Carolina and FSU Thomas gained a ton of experience in college at two major programs. He played a total of six seasons at South Carolina and Florida State, playing 59 games and making 44 starts. He recorded 15 sacks and 30.5 tackles for a loss in his college career.

Sean McVay says Arcuri is in real consideration for that 8/9 spot on the offensive line and praised his growth. The players viable for that spot have to do multiple things.znModeratoralyoshamucci
What I need to note first is the difference in offensive depth and talent on a Zac Taylor team. I think their defense was above average but still had plenty of holes on 3rd string, where they should be.
I also think both squads were a little tired. I may be reading too much into that but most of the players Im used to seeing move faster had a little lead in their pants.
Guys who will not clear waivers (new section for this game only)
1) Bryce Perkins … He has shown touch, the ability to make quick decisions, and grit running the football.
2) McCutcheon … He’s a 1:1 beater. Just throw the ball up and he’s got the advantage. His tracking and balance cannot be taught.
3) AJ Arcuri … Honestly came along as fast or faster than AJ Jackson last year. The “Nah, we don’t have to draft an OLT” sentence is something I never thought was possible. I was wrong.
4) Jonah Williams … Someone will roster him if we don’t. Hoecht might slide through …
The Great
5) Having cut downs be as hard as they are.
6) Really just a show put on by McCutcheon … haven’t enjoyed a preseason as much as this in a while. (Though he had a couple marks against him this game, late to a block kinda stuff)
7) Keir Thomas. He might make it through waivers, I give it 50/50. He has certainly put together some highlights, but when he’s beat he seems to get fully swallowed.
The Good
8) Trammell, just put him on the bench, we know we want him on the PS as our backup PR.
9) Roger Carter looks smooth catching and running with the ball. He doesn’t have height but he’s still dangerous on bootlegs and check downs… Im sure he’ll be a PS guy.
10) Hummel I thought had a decent to plus preseason and was getting places faster in this game, though I still would take the chance on losing him to save a roster spot.
11) PS talent depth at DB. We won’t lose all of them. Likely 2-3.
12) I thought Ragas was good on short yardage.
13) Garrett Flashed a tiny bit, but should still clear waivers. I’d keep K Thomas over him.
The Bad
14) Jake, you CANNOT fumble. I’m letting him clear waivers.
15) I am NOT happy with our punting situation.
16) The completion percentage by Allen and Browning are a tad disconcerting. It could just be their talent, but I’m not used to seeing so many guys open against us.
17) Not happy with Yeast.

That’s a wrap on the preseason. The Rams finished their exhibition slate on Saturday night with a 16-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, their second loss of the preseason.
As poorly as the offense played, putting together just one scoring drive, the defense had a few standout performers. It was the last chance for players to impress the coaching staff before final roster cuts, and four guys stood out for the right reasons Saturday.
There were also four players who didn’t have their best against the Bengals. Here are our studs and duds from Saturday’s loss.
Stud: OLB Keir Thomas
Thomas looked great against the Bengals, even despite only playing about half the game. Most impressively, he used his size and length to disrupt the Bengals’ running game, slicing through for an impressive TFL in the second quarter.
Stud: WR Lance McCutcheon
McCutcheon put himself on the map in Week 1 of the preseason by scoring two touchdowns, and it clearly wasn’t a fluke. He came back the next two weeks and played well, including a five-catch, 76-yard performance against the Bengals on Saturday. He made a great grab for 32 yards in the fourth quarter, helping set up Bryce Perkins’ 3-yard touchdown run. All he’s done is make plays and it should earn him a spot on the 53-man roster.
Stud: DL Michael Hoecht
Hoecht should make the Rams’ 53-man roster after doing so last year and looking good this preseason. Against the Bengals, he had two tackles, including one that went for a loss. His sack helped force a field goal attempt by Cincinnati, too.
When the Bengals were pinned deep, Hoecht laid a big hit on Brandon Allen, who still managed to complete it deep to his receiver. Hoecht was a split-second late, but it was a good rush rep.
Stud: LB Jake Hummel
McVay shared a neat bit of information after the game: Hummel broke the team’s preseason tackles record. He finished the preseason with 22 tackles, topping the previous record of 21. On Saturday night, he finished with six tackles, including one tackle for a loss. He’s been all around the ball throughout the preseason.
Dud: RB Jake Funk
Funk got 19 carries this preseason, including seven on Saturday night. His longest carry went for 6 yards. Yes, he’s playing behind a backup offensive line, but the Bengals have also been playing their backups. He finished the night with 32 yards on 12 carries, also fumbling it deep in the red zone after attempting to gain extra yards after contact.
Dud: RT Bobby Evans
Evans has struggled throughout the preseason and gave up another sack against the Bengals, getting beat by in the first half. He’s going to be a player to watch when final cuts are made because by no means is he a lock to make the team, despite being a fourth-year veteran and former third-round pick.
Dud: CB Cobie Durant
Durant was a real bright spot in the first two preseason games, but he made some mistakes against the Bengals in coverage. He allowed two big plays to Bengals receivers, though the Rams seemed to be in zone coverage on the deep shot to Kendric Pryor in the first half. He also missed a tackle along the sideline before getting up and eventually making the stop on the receiver.
Dud: OL Chandler Brewer
Brewer didn’t have the best night. He was beat quickly and badly by Zachary Carter for a sack, which resulted in a fumble by Bryce Perkins – thankfully, one the Rams recovered. Brewer isn’t necessarily a long shot to make the team, but he’s also not among the favorites. This performance probably won’t help his chances.

Deserved after the spring and summer he had.They have a practice on Monday as far as I am aware, so doesn’t make a lot of sense to wait even until Tues if they want to get to their “real” full install time ahead of Buffalo quick as they can. But they may have some other reason in mind if they do wait.

Rams have no offensive line depth, and the other thing is that we haven’t really seen their offensive line STARTERS yet with Noteboom, Shelton taking on starting roles for the first time.Lance McCutcheon should change Rams’ long-term plans at WR and maybe even any thought of signing OBJ.

Perkins is just great in space with his legs. If he ever has to take control of the offense, it’ll hopefully be scaled back to better suit his skill set.In other words, he should probably never be in empty. Total opposite of what they do with Stafford.
