znModeratorWhy Matthew Stafford holds the power in contract issue with Rams ahead of camp
Gary Klein
The Rams were all smiles Tuesday as they completed offseason workouts on a beautiful final afternoon in Thousand Oaks.
Everyone connected with the organization appeared upbeat.
But make no mistake: A pall hangs over the Rams and their sunny disposition as they enter a break before reporting to training camp at Loyola Marymount on July 23.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford went through the voluntary offseason workout program at odds with the Rams over his contract. Coach Sean McVay gave no indication Tuesday that the team and the 16th-year pro are close to finding common ground.
Asked after the workout if there was progress with the Stafford situation, McVay demurred.
“If you had to guess,” he said, “what would you say my answer is going to be?”
Does he anticipate that Stafford will report for the start of training camp?
“That’s my expectation,” McVay said.
How will McVay’s summer go with the Stafford situation hanging over his head?
“I’m just going to think about this every second,” he said sarcastically, adding, “I think, like I said, we’ll keep things internally.
“I couldn’t be more impressed with the way that he’s handled it. The way he’s led — been here every single day doing his thing and that sure means a lot to me.”
But what does it mean for the Rams?
After unexpectedly making the playoffs last season, they are regarded as a potential Super Bowl contender. That projection only rings true, however, if Stafford is under center.
Stafford, 36, has three years remaining on the extension he signed in 2022 after leading the Rams to a Super Bowl title. He is due to carry a salary-cap number of $49.5 million this season, but does not have guaranteed salary in 2025 and 2026, according to Overthecap.com.
During the NFL draft, NFL Network reported that Stafford wanted his contract adjusted to include guaranteed salary beyond this season. McVay acknowledged the report the next day, though not the specifics of what Stafford desires.
“There’s nothing that’s more important than making sure that he feels appreciated,” McVay said at the time, “and he knows how much we love him and want him to lead the way and, you know, I think that the commitment that I think he wants to have can be reciprocated and we want to work toward figuring that out.”
Still, it is not clear exactly what Stafford wants. An adjusted contract? A massive raise like the one recently retired defensive lineman Aaron Donald received after the Super Bowl victory? A new deal?
Stafford has not addressed reporters who cover the Rams since their playoff defeat at Detroit in January. Unlike teammates, Stafford was not made available to the media during the offseason program.
Coaches and players said Stafford operated as usual and showed no sign that he was affected by the contract situation.
The quarterback market has continued to rise since Stafford signed his deal 14 months after the Rams acquired him in a 2021 trade that sent quarterback Jared Goff, two first-round draft picks and a third-round pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Stafford.
It’s worth noting that in May — four months after he helped the Lions defeat the Rams in the NFC wild-card game that doubled as Stafford’s homecoming — the Lions awarded Goff with an extension that includes $170 million in guarantees.
Stafford has given no indication that he will not report to training camp but he seemingly has leverage if he opted for that route.
New back-up Jimmy Garoppolo is a proven veteran, but he is suspended for the first two games against the Lions and Arizona Cardinals for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy while he was playing for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Stetson Bennett is essentially a rookie after sitting out last season to deal with what he has acknowledged were issues that fell under the umbrella of mental health.
McVay on Tuesday praised Garoppolo and Bennett for their progress during the offseason program. Both will be at training camp, McVay said.
Do the Rams really want to go to Detroit with Bennett conceivably making his first NFL start?
McVay and the Rams have experience with a star player holding out because of a contract dispute. In 2017 and 2018, Donald did not report to camp and the Rams managed just fine. The future Hall of Famer’s absence enabled then-defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to experiment with other combinations before Donald showed up.
A missing starting quarterback would be entirely different. It would be a disaster.
So the Rams cannot relax until the Stafford situation is resolved.

znModeratorRams ‘minicamp’: Last days at CLU, mental workloads increase, Kyren Williams returns
By Jourdan Rodrigue
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — It was only fitting that a hawk circled the emerald-green grass practice fields at California Lutheran University during what is expected to be the last practice before the Los Angeles Rams relocate into Woodland Hills, Calif.
Wildlife and high winds in the fall were two trademarks of the space, a simple (and, eventually, decaying) cluster of temporary trailers positioned alongside those fields, a small patch of gray rectangles in dry brown hills of the area.
“I have loved the privacy out here,” head coach Sean McVay said, “the only downside is really when it gets windy.”
Over time, two things were true of the lodgings that ended up the Rams’ home for seven years — five longer than expected: It was not fit to house an NFL team long term, and it was also a place devoted purely to football and nothing else.
Tuesday’s practice was just a walk-through, and it will be the only day of minicamp for the team as it breaks for the summer. The Rams report to training camp July 23 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Here are a few notes, quotes and observations from the session — and as a reminder, the Rams prohibit credentialed media from reporting on specifics such as scheme, formations, snap counts or anything they could deem as competitive information. If a coach addresses a position hierarchy or a schematic concept directly in a news conference when asked, that information is then able to be reported.
• The Rams will have four joint practices during the preseason this summer, against the Dallas Cowboys (Oxnard, Calif.), the Chargers (Los Angeles area) and Houston Texans (Houston). Joint practices are always valuable for teams to try ideas against an actual opponent, without showing those ideas on preseason tape (and McVay doesn’t play starters, so joint practices are where those players get their competitive reps). These will weigh even more importantly on special teams, where coordinators will be able to try their concepts in the new kickoff rule for the first time.
• Lead rusher Kyren Williams is back at practice, after he missed the first portion of OTAs this spring with a foot injury. He is expected to fully participate in training camp, McVay said. The Rams clearly favor three running backs on their roster — Williams, rookie Blake Corum and backup Ronnie Rivers. Veteran running back Boston Scott has taken on a significant role in all special teams phases.
“Even in a walk-through setting, you always feel his presence,” McVay said of Williams. “He’s always got such a great energy about himself. He’s so engaged. He’s got a great focus and concentration. We’ll be glad to be able to have him back in practice settings.”
• McVay repeated the same line Tuesday as he has all spring, when a reporter asked him about quarterback Matthew Stafford’s ongoing contract situation. McVay confirmed in April that Stafford is looking for an adjusted contract, but the veteran has not skipped any practices — whether voluntary or not.
“It’ll be the same-as, we’ll keep things internally,” said McVay, who added that Stafford is expected to report on time to training camp.
• Cornerback Tre’Davious White participated in the walk-through; he had previously worked to the side with an athletic trainer. White is still recovering from Achilles surgery, and while McVay expressed his hope that White will be ready for the season opener in September, the Rams are not placing a strict timeline on his return to full play. From watching White’s interactions during and after practices, it’s clear the former Buffalo Bills star has already become a go-to voice not just for players, but also for coaches.
• The Rams are blocking out an increased number of periods during practice for special teams installations and drills. Part of this is because they need to figure out their plan for the NFL’s new kickoff rule, and part is because the Rams were the league’s worst special teams unit by a wide margin in 2023.
“You want to be intentional about figuring out, ‘OK, how can we be the most complete football team — offense, defense and the kicking game,’” McVay said. “There’s no running away from … we have to be a lot better than what we were. And I believe that we are in the midst of figuring that out — that’s execution-oriented, that’s schematically, that’s being able to adjust to some of the new things that are on the horizon.”
McVay noted he has been “pleased” with the leadership he has seen from second-year coordinator Chase Blackburn and new assistant special teams coordinator Chili Davis.
• While veteran tight end Colby Parkinson, who was signed this spring in free agency, has impressed so far into OTAs, second-year tight end Davis Allen is getting a significant mental workload with Stafford and in a variety of roles.
“I feel a lot more comfortable, everything has slowed down tremendously, which has helped me a ton,” Allen said. “Thankfully, I trained out here this offseason. I weigh more, I feel stronger.
“We talk about extreme accountability here. And I just, I don’t want to let anyone down. That’s my biggest fear is letting someone down. You’ve got 10 other guys laying it out on the line and doing their job, they expect you to do yours.”
As I previously reported, tight end Hunter Long has returned to practice after MCL repair surgery last season.
• While the Rams’ leadoff rotation of pass rushers features Byron Young, Jared Verse and Michael Hoecht, I also have an eye on smaller-framed (but ultra-fast) second-year player Nick Hampton. When pads go on at training camp, it will be interesting to see the role he carves out.
• Inside linebacker Ernest Jones did not practice throughout the spring while dealing with a knee issue (he is expected to be OK for training camp), but Tuesday he spent the walk-through positioned deep into the field behind the defense shadowing the plays as if he were taking actual reps. At times, safety Russ Yeast — who, as I previously reported, is training at the “star” position — hovered near Jones to talk through concepts and calls. Yeast drew praise from coaches Tuesday for some of his reads of plays during the walk-through.

znModeratorFour Tops singer’s lawsuit says he visited ER for chest pain, ended up in straitjacket
When Alexander Morris, a member of the Motown group The Four Tops, visited a Detroit-area Ascension hospital with chest pain and trouble breathing, he said the staff assumed he was mentally ill after he told them he was a famous singer. Instead of treating Morris, a white security guard told him to “sit his Black ass down” and he was placed in a straitjacket, Morris claims in a new lawsuit.
Morris is suing Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan over his April 2023 treatment, alleging racial discrimination and false imprisonment, among other counts. The federal lawsuit, filed on Monday in the Eastern District of Michigan, names as defendants the hospital, a nurse, and a security guard who were involved in the incident.
In a statement, Ascension said it would not comment on pending litigation. “We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community,” the system said. “We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind.”
Morris described the experience as “terrifying” in a statement shared by his attorneys.
“I see all of these posts on social media like ‘driving while black,’ ‘walking while black,’ but I never imagined I would become a victim of ‘being sick while Black,’” Morris said. “The hospital never fired the security guard that told me to sit my Black ass down. Clearly they condone racism. I filed the lawsuit to hold the hospital accountable for the way I was treated and to protect the younger generations from racism in healthcare.”
The staff members named as defendants are security guard Greg Ciesielski and nurse Holly Jackson. The lawsuit does not mention that Ciesielski, the guard who allegedly made the racial slur, died in September 2023. A GoFundMe page for his family says Ciesielski suffered a ruptured aorta, leaving behind a wife and two adult children. Messages to his wife were not returned. Jackson could not be reached for comment. The ER physician who treated Morris isn’t named as a defendant.
Neither of Morris’ attorneys, Maurice Davis in Southfield, Michigan, or Jasmine Rand of Miami, Florida, responded to questions about the fact that one of the defendants was deceased.
The Four Tops is a Grammy Award-nominated vocal group from Detroit that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. It’s known for hits like “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” At the time of the incident, The Four Tops was on a national tour with The Temptations and had recently performed at the Grammy Awards.
Morris has a significant history of heart problems, including the placement of stents and a defibrillator. He was transported to the emergency room on April 7, 2023, by ambulance and was already receiving oxygen. By the end of his hospitalization, he would be diagnosed with a heart attack that may require a heart transplant and pneumonia. He also suffered three seizures during his hospital stay, per the lawsuit.
When he got to the ER, Morris told a nurse and a security guard that he was a member of The Four Tops and that he had security concerns due to stalkers and fans. Morris’ complaint says shortly after check-in, he explained his medical history to an emergency room doctor and told him about his current symptoms.
When he shared his celebrity status, Morris claims that the ER doctor assumed he was mentally ill. He removed Morris’ oxygen and ordered a psychological evaluation “despite his clear symptoms of cardiac distress and significant medical history,” the complaint said.
As this was happening, Morris explained to the staff around him, including the nurse and security guard, that he had identification and could show them who he was. Instead, the security guard told him to “sit his Black ass down.” Morris’ lawsuit said the comment was made in front of at least four staff members, but none of them intervened to stop the mistreatment. To his knowledge, none of them reported the use of a racial slur to a supervisor.
“Moreover, none of the nursing staff thought to simply ask for Plaintiff’s identification,” the complaint says.

In the restraint jacket, Morris allegedly told staff he was having trouble breathing, and asked for the oxygen back. He said he was ignored. Morris then asked to have the jacket removed and for his belongings to be returned so he could leave and go to another hospital. His lawsuit says he was told he couldn’t leave. His medical condition declined. Several security guards were allegedly called to ensure he couldn’t leave.Eventually, Morris’ wife showed up and saw what was happening. She told a security guard that he was actually a member of The Four Tops, but the guard allegedly left the restraints on and continued to deny Morris medical treatment. Finally, a nurse came to Morris’ side, and Morris asked if he could show her a video of him performing at the Grammy Awards. Realizing he was actually a member of the group, she told the doctor, who said he was canceling the psychological evaluation. Staff removed the straitjacket and placed Morris back on oxygen.
Morris’ lawsuit says he was restrained for about 90 minutes. He was offered a $25 Meijer gift card as an apology, which he declined.
In addition to racial discrimination and false imprisonment, Morris’ lawsuit alleges gross negligence, negligence, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

znModeratorLA Football Network@LAFBNetworkNot So “Fearsome Foursome” Anymore? #Rams fall to 22nd in latest LB unit rankings. Can they improve before the season starts?..FTN Fantasy unveiled their 2024 Linebacker Unit Ranking this week and the Los Angeles Rams starting four linebackers were ranked toward the bottom, despite the teams’ recent attempts to shore up the group..Here is what FTN wrote of those four linebackers;
The Rams found a gem in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft in Tennessee’s Byron Young. Young finished his rookie season with the second most pressures (50) and sacks (8.0). He was also top five on the team in tackles (61) and tackles for loss (8). His development will be crucial for a team looking for consistent pressure without Aaron Donald.
Los Angeles also used the draft in 2024 to fortify their edge-rushing talent, selecting Florida State’s Jared Verse in the first round. Verse had three straight seasons with a PFF grade above 82.0, including a 2023 season that saw him post career highs in sacks (11.0) and hurries (36). He also had a 90.8 pass-rush grade in his final collegiate season and will have an opportunity to see immediate playing time with the Rams. Veteran edge rusher Michael Hoecht (39 pressures and 6.0 sacks in 2023) can provide some stability if Verse needs time to acclimate.
Interior linebacker Ernest Jones IV took a major step in his third season, generating 145 tackles and 4.5 sacks while setting career-highs in PFF grade (82.1), run defense grade (90.0) and pass rush grade (78.2). He will be joined by Christian Rozeboom, a below-average starter who had a 49.0 PFF grade in 2023 despite having 79 tackles and an interception.
Ultimately, this group’s ranking hinges on how well Verse can play across from Young. If he struggles to adjust to the NFL level, then it could be a very long first season without Aaron Donald for the Rams.

I have mostly seen Whittington working with Jimmy G though that is significant considering the makeup of the WR room. BY speed and power so far looks good but nothing is real yet for trench guys. I’d like to see a little more 12P but I am constantly reminded how hybrid and versatile their 11P is and I think sometimes people forget that staying in 11 helps them play faster because they don’t have to sub. But situationally yes would love to see those TEs continue to get a lot of work

Veteran running back Boston Scott, who was signed by the Rams in late-spring, is already a key contributor on special teams (inclusive to the new kickoff rules), according to coordinator Chase Blackburn.
“He’s done a really nice job,” Blackburn said. “He has done both punt return and kick return, awesome to have him here. Great veteran presence. Really taking a leadership role even immediately in the punt team, moving around from wing to person protector to making the calls, going back and forth … then obviously from a dual returner perspective, just a great guy.
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports
it’s abundantly clear how much the Rams coveted Verse. They were elated to see six quarterbacks go in the first 12 picks, which pushed defensive players down the board. And as their draft slot approached at No. 19, the possibility of landing Verse became even more real.
Director of scouting strategy James Gladstone shared some insight into how much the scouts and coaches loved Verse with this tidbit: “We had three players with 11 selections from our scouting staff and coaching staff combined that received 11 votes. The one remaining is Jared Verse.”
Needless to say, Verse was the top player left on the Rams’ board and they likely had him ranked much higher than 19th.
…
Verse and Brennan Jackson were ranked 1st and 2nd by Rams for physical toughness

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports
The Rams don’t just rank players based on their overall ability. We learned in the [Behind the Grind episode 2] video that they also categorize them by traits, like physical toughness. And using that, they selected the top two players in terms of physical toughness.
“Brennan Jackson, rankings for physical toughness, guess who he’s behind?” Gladstone asked McVay.
“Verse,” McVay replied.
“Yeah, so you would end up with No. 1 and No. 2 physical toughness.”
Snead liked Jackson’s game a lot and would not have been happy had they missed out on him in Round 5.
“That’s the one to me that if we lose Washington State, I’ll be…”
“Pissed?” McVay said, finishing Snead’s sentence.

Eisen asked Corum what specifically is so impressive about Stafford and he immediately mentioned his no-look passes.
“The way he can look this way but throw the ball this way, it blows my mind,” Corum said. “But that’s why he’s been in the league so long and been great at what he does for so long. It’s exciting being in the backfield with Matthew Stafford.”
znModeratorif the rams know something the rest of the league doesn’t, i’m all for it. i definitely could see all four becoming starters at some point.
I think it’s more a case of “fits” and “knowing what they want” … plus scouting character etc.
I don’t think it’s a case of knowing something the league doesn’t, again it’s just “fits.”
My admittedly very early take on this draft is that it will include more pure starter-quality “hits” and finds than any other Rams draft, going back years.
But some of that is qualified because if, as it now looks, Whittington turns out to be a multi-unit special teams ace (blocking and tackling) plus a tough, reliable 3rd or 4th WR, do we count that as a big “hit”? (I would.)

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-roster-rankings-all-32-teams-2024-strengths-weaknesses-x-factors
14. LOS ANGELES RAMS
Biggest strength in 2023: Offensive Balance
The Rams ranked inside the top 10 in every aspect of offensive grading except pass protection last season. Matthew Stafford had a big bounce-back year. Kyren Williams proved himself to be a workhorse. Puka Nacua set the rookie receiving record. With an improved offensive line heading into 2024, the Rams’ offense will be dangerous as long as Stafford continues to produce at a high level.
Biggest weakness in 2023: Coverage
Los Angeles ranked dead last in team coverage grade last season (46.2). They were extremely young and did not have a single defensive back finish with at least a 70.0 coverage grade. They’ve done significant work this offseason to improve their secondary, though, and if that work pays off, they could be a dark-horse NFC contender.
X-factor for 2024: DI Kobie Turner
Aaron Donald’s retirement forces Kobie Turner into a marquee role on the Rams’ defensive line. Turner finished his rookie season with an excellent 83.2 overall grade and led the team with 9 sacks. Obviously, he won’t be asked to fill the void left by Donald by himself, but he will need to continue his excellent play to mitigate the loss.
Rookie to watch: EDGE Jared Verse
Another player tasked with replacing Aaron Donald’s production is first-round pick Jared Verse. He had a spectacular two-year run at Florida State and produced a 90.8 pass-rush grade in 2023. Meanwhile, the Rams’ edge group finished 30th in the NFL in overall grade last season. Verse will have every opportunity to star for this defense.
Over/Under 8.5 win total: Over
Aaron Donald is a huge loss for the Rams, but a team with Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua should still have a winning season. Their postseason success will be dictated by their defensive development. As long as Stafford continues to produce, the Rams will at least be in the playoff mix.
znModeratorRams Wire@TheRamsWireJonah Jackson impressed by Steve Avila’s move to center: ‘He’s doing incredible’
znModeratorElvis
The original plan for Bennett was he’d be a relatively cheap and competent #2 for years to come, and he’d be #2 out of the box. Did they think he could be more? I think they were gonna wait and see on that.
Clearly things are different this year. Reports are McVay has liked Jimmy G. for a while and Jourdan said you can see the difference at practice when the #2 QB knows and executes the offense so they can run all the same stuff.
Though Jimmy G. is suspended for the first two games. At this point you gotta figure Stetson is Stafford’s backup going into the season…
How this all shakes out, we’ll see.
znModeratorDuring an interview with J.B. Long and D’Marco Farr, Jackson said Stafford was the primary reason he picked the Rams.
“It definitely came down to a few teams but here, obviously, the weather is absolutely incredibly. Every day is beautiful. But, No. 9,” Jackson said. “I had Matthew my rookie year and I knew what he brought to the table and I knew he could bring us all the way. And from the outside looking in, we had a lot of carryover in Detroit and I got along well with those guys. Greg, Brad (Holmes), Jared (Goff) and they all loved it out here and I figured they’re my kind of guys.”

znModeratorKupp
McVay said on Tuesday that Kupp was dealing with more than people realize. He compared it to Matthew Stafford in 2022 when he was playing through various injuries, including an elbow issue that limited him greatly throughout the spring and summer.
“Really, similar to Matthew in ‘22 and then Cooper last year, I don’t think anybody really understands the amount of things that both of those guys were working through in each of those years,” McVay said. “That gives you an appreciation, and I think both of them an appreciation for how much they love this game and how much more fun it is when you’re feeling good. But you talk about a guy that’s really set the tempo for the way that this offseason has gone. I’m not surprised, but you sure are impressed with just the consistency, the work ethic, the growth mindset, and how that influences and affects the rest of the guys that he’s around.
