February 20, 2015 at 9:22 am in reply to: Chargers, Raiders propose shared NFL stadium in Carson #18740TackleDummyParticipant
I think that the Charger/Raider move is designed to counteract the power play of Kroenke. By announcing a stadium for LA Kroenke started forcing hands. He got St. Louis off the fence and they have stadium plans well underway. But neither the Chargers nor the Raiders want to be subservient to Kroenke in his new stadium. If this new Charger/Raider plan to build a stadium turns out to be viable and if St. Louis can actually get a stadium funded then it seems clear to me that the Chargers and Raiders will be moving to Carson (which is two hours from downtown San Diego) and that the Rams will be staying in St. Louis. Still pretty big ifs, however.
TackleDummyParticipantThere were 22 offensive linemen who were drafted in the first three rounds last year (2014). Five in round one, six in round two, and 11 in round three.
Of the five OL players drafted in round one they started 16, 16, 16, 12, and 6 games. And Lewan Taylor, who started in only six games was injured for the last six games of the season. All five would have to be considered starters in their rookie year and are entrenched for next year..
Of the six OL players drafted in round two they started in 16, 16, 15, 14, 1, and 0 games. Four were starters. One, Cyrus Kouandjio, played in only one game then lost his starting RT job and did not play anymore even though he was healthy. He probably will be moved to guard next year. Another, guard Xavier Su’a-Filo, played in 13 games but started only one.
Of the 11 OL players drafted in round three they started in 15, 12, 9, 8, 5, 5, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0 games in 2014. It becomes clear that third round draft choices cannot be counted on to be starters their first year. That does not mean they will not develop into solid players, just not in the first year.
Based on last year it looks like if a team drafts an OL player in either round 1 or round 2 that a player has a pretty good chance of starting his first year. But if you wait until round 3 you should count on him being no better than a backup his first year. With that in mind one possibility for the Rams would be to trade down from the #10 position to pick up a second round choice, then draft OL in rounds 1, 2, and 3 and with the other round 2 pick draft a QB. That should give the Rams two starters plus a backup on the OL and a backup QB.
TackleDummyParticipantWhat if you could go back and choose
between Robinson and Martin — which would
you choose?Still Robinson. Through the next 10 years I think that a left tackle Robinson will be much more valuable than the guard Martin.
February 11, 2015 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Ask Dolphins, Titans why splurging on free agents is a losing strategy #18343TackleDummyParticipantEvery year we have a bunch of posters who want the Rams to go big after this player or another. I remember some who really wanted Mike Wallace, for example. And it will be no different this year. But it seems that the current Rams strategy of build through the draft and sign your own players is, in the long run, the best way to go. Just not the fastest.
TackleDummyParticipantI am in complete agreement with Jason Cole.
A lot of posters are for just cutting Bradford. And I can see their reasoning. But if he is cut he will get just as good a deal elsewhere. There are too many teams out there who are desperate for a quarterback who will bid for Bradford. He would get more money as a free agent than he would in playing out his contract. So if the Rams want to keep Bradford they will either have to pay his current contract for one year and see what happens or they will have to offer him a contract that will be a better deal than he now has.
If they play Bradford under his current contract they run the risk of him having a breakout year and then having to pay him big bucks next year.
If they give him a multiple year contract that would give Bradford more guaranteed money than 13M they run the risk of Bradford getting hurt again and wasting that money. But it might be worth the risk if that guaranteed money is spread out over several years. And Bradford has to agree on this solution.
If they cut him the Rams lose any chance of taking advantage of a resurgent Bradford.
There is no sure answer. The Rams (and Bradford) have to take their choice.
TackleDummyParticipantI had the thought that Kroenke would trade the Rams for the Chargers. Spanos would keep the Rams team in St. Louis but sell (trade, or whaterver) the Rams name to Kroenke. Kroenke would move the current Chargers to LA which would become the Los Angles Rams. Spanos would change the name of the current Rams (keeping all the players) to something more related to St. Louis (i.e. The Clydesdales ) Davis would move the Raiders to LA and the LA Rams and LA Raiders would share Kroenke’s new stadium. Since the two teams are currently in the AFC West, the LA Rams would move to the NFC West and the StL Clydesdales would move to the AFC West. That would make the NFC West the Seahawks, the 49ers, the Cardinals and the Rams. It would make the AFC West the Raiders, the Broncos, the Chiefs, and the Clydesdales.
Kroenke would own a stadium that had his team plus another team using it as its home. St Louis would still have its team with its players in St. Louis. My guess is that most potential Rams fans in LA (the masses of LA fans, not those Rams fans posting on boards) could care less which set of players became the “Rams”. They might even be more familar with the current Charger players than the current Rams players.
February 4, 2015 at 10:56 am in reply to: Sapp Arrested For Soliciting Prostitute [Update: Fired by NFL Network] #17915TackleDummyParticipantI find it interesting that neither NFL Live (ESPN) nor Total Access (NFL network) even mentioned Sapp on their shows.
TackleDummyParticipantMy last one was about two weeks ago while I was on a cruise ship in South America. Fortunately it was a small one and passed in a few hours. Doctor on board was pretty good.
The one before that was 10mm in diameter and occured while I was in Indiana. (I live in Arizona). It took two operations to get all of that one.
Kidney stones are not fun at all!!!!!!!!!!!
TackleDummyParticipantHow many of them have top 10 passing games (measure by yards per attempt): 8 of them. Green Bay, Denver, Dallas, Pitt, IND, N.O., Phil, Baltimore.
How many of them have top 10 running games (measured in yards per game): 4 of them. Seattle, Dallas, Baltimore, Phil
The two teams that have top 10 scoring offense but not a top 10 passing game: Seahawks and Pats. The superbowl teams.
And NE also does not have a top 10 running game.
BTW: I would prefer that both best running and passing games be given in yards per game or both given in yards per attempt. Comparing apples with apples that way.
TackleDummyParticipantHe’s been running behind a lousy O line.
According to PFF Oline rankings the Rams Oline ranked 31st, near the bottom. The Seahawks Oline ranked 18th, near the middle.
TackleDummyParticipantMarshawn Lynch would certainly improve the Rams. But my guess is that dreaming about it is about all the Rams will do. In free agency I would guess that their first priority will be a quarterback and the second priority will be to build up the offensive line. Plus there are some players on the Rams roster that they will want to resign or extend.
TackleDummyParticipantMatt Conrath and Brad Smelley who were on the Rams PS at the end of the season have not yet been signed by the Rams for 2015.
TackleDummyParticipantSilly idea? A possibly Good idea?
Any reason to think he
can still play football
at any position?Fisher said he could play LT, LG, RG, or RT. But he did not commit to him at all in his presser.
TackleDummyParticipantI think this is kind of like just after the 1998 season and the Rams were about to can Dick Vermeil. They forced him to make changes to his staff and to bring in Martz as the OC. I think Fisher is only fooling himself if he thinks the offense will be any better next season with Schottenheimer. There are at least 4 guys who are OCs that are better than Schottenheimer, and they are available. Trestman, Chudzinski, Mike Shanahan, Mike Martz
I would not bet that any of the four would accept an OC job which would say they are not available. And Martz would not at all fit in with the Rams. He has a very large ego problem and cannot get along with anyone. He would not follow orders. I would not like his baggage at all.
TackleDummyParticipant101espn @101espn
“At this point he is. I think it’s reasonable to expect another QB to compete here.” Fisher on Bradford being the best option. #FisherShowHe also said that right now Bradford is the favorite to start next year. This is what a lot of us have been saying. Bring Bradford AND get a qb who would be a much better #2 than we have now.
IMO, that would seem to eliminate a trade up for a QB. To go after one of the top two QBs in the draft would be to start him. Fisher said they could go the draft route, or free agent or something else. Not a direct quote, but he said all three things. All I can think of for the “something else” would be a trade. So they will be looking at all three options.
Some of us would like to both bring in a high level vet and a high draft choice at qb. I doubt that both will happen. Fisher did sign high praises of both Hill and Davis. My speculation is if the Rams bring in a vet the Rams three qbs would be Bradford, the vet, and Davis. If they draft a qb in the first two rounds their three qbs would be Bradford, the draft choice, and Hill.
TackleDummyParticipantI really hope so. Robinson and Saffold will be back next year. But most people expect Long, Wells and Joseph to be gone. If Barksdale leaves then that makes three holes to fill on the OL. It would be a lot to ask of the Rams to have to come up with that many new starters on the OL.
Right now the Rams could start Robinson, Person, Jones, Saffold, and Barksdale with existing personel. If they add a high level draft choice and a FA that would give them their 7 game day OL players. The draft choice might start the second half of the season. The FA may or may not be a starter.
December 29, 2014 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14937TackleDummyParticipantIf Bradford were a free agent this year, he’d be the top available QB on the market, imo.
If Bradford were not coming off of two ACL suguries you would be right for sure. On the free agent market right now the question becomes what qb teams would be willing to throw the dice and take a chance on Bradford and for what price? My guess there would be two or three who would give him an incentive ladened offer. I also think that the Rams will be one of those teams.
TackleDummyParticipantThe caller very much sounds like a poster who calls himself “ramgator”. He is a fan of the Florida Gators and thinks the NFL is not giving Tebow a fair deal. He thinks that, if given a chance, Tebow would be an all-pro. He is also anti Fisher and Snead.
BTW — what the radio guys said is pretty much what I have been posting all along.
TackleDummyParticipantrepost, but it goes with the discussion in this thread.
Offensive Linemen on current roster
Starters
LT Greg Robinson — The second overall pick in this past draft. He is expected to be the Rams starter at LT for at least the next decade. He is very young and very raw but also a great talent. Expect him to become the solid LT in his second year that some fans mistakenly expected him to be this year.LG Rodger Saffold — Rodger has had a history of injuries but has come back and played in all 16 games this season (missing only parts of two games) despite having shoulder problems. A very tough individual. He will have surgery this off season (January 7th to be exact) to correct his shoulder. He will be ready by the start of training camp.
C Scott Wells — Wells redid his contract before this season. The contract calls for $1.75M roster bonus in early March. He will not see that money.
RG Davin Joseph — Joseph was signed to a one year contract by the Rams as a backup after last year’s draft. He was forced into the starter’s job after Jake Long went down. He probably will not be returning unless it would be as a backup. And probably not then.
RT Joe Barksdale — the Rams starter at RT for the last two years. He is fairly solid but will never be all-pro. He is also an UFA. Look for the Rams to try to resign him at their price.
Primary Backups (according to ourlads)
LT, LG, RG Mike Person
C Tim Barnes
RT, LT Brandon Washington
C, G Barrett JonesThere will be two (maybe three if Barksdale is not resigned) starting positions available. Look for at least one, and maybe two or even three, of these positions to be filled by the four players listed above. Fisher’s 20 year history is to draft OL low and develop them. Just as Barksdale got his shot as a starter, these four have been warming the bench waiting their turn. And they have been working in the training room, film room, the classroom, and on the practice field. For one or two of them their work may pay off and their turn may have just arrived.
Others
C Demetrius Rhaney (IR) 2014 Round 7.
OT Steven Baker (Practice Squad)
OG Travis Bond (Practice Squad)
LT J Long on IRIt is likely that the first three will be on the Rams 80 man roster at the beginning of training camp. They will be given a chance to make the 53 man roster but I would think it would be very unlikely that they could earn a starting role in 2015.
I look for Jake Long to be cut unless he retires.
Free Agents and the draft
A year ago I would have said it would be very unlikely the Rams would draft an OL early in the draft. But they did and tried to draft another. So it could well be that they would draft a guard or tackle in the one of the first two rounds. If Barksdale is resigned it would be someone who could start at guard the first year. I could see the Rams entering free agency for a starting OL if they feel that they do not already have one of the positions filled. I know what the fans want, but I think Snead and Fisher will probably have other ideas. But I also think that OL will be one of their highest priorities.- This reply was modified 10 years ago by TackleDummy.
December 29, 2014 at 10:36 am in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14905TackleDummyParticipantI think the only top grade College QB the Rams have a shot at is Brett Hundley and if I were the Rams I’d definitely take that shot. I think Hundley has the talent and the smarts and with good coaching could be a legit upper caliber starter in the NFL.
That is probably right. But don’t count on him being any better than Hill or Davis in his first year.
TackleDummyParticipantFYI: Hill’s qb rating against the Seahawks was 65.5
TackleDummyParticipantYour question was “Have the Rams improved in the last three years?”. The answer is yes. The overall roster today is much better than it was three years ago. It has not been shown in the win-lose totals mostly due to the quarterback situation and partly due to the division the Rams are in. Actually, it has been shown in their W-L record in that in the five years before Fisher the Rams won a total of 15 games. In the three years under Fisher they have won 20.5 games as of right now.
I do not know what it will take for Fisher to get a fifth year. I don’t think being in the playoffs is the criteria. What it will take is continued improvement. I would guess that 8-8 would do it. Almost for sure 10-6 would be enough even if that did not get the Rams into the playoffs. But what it really takes is for Kroenke to decide that it would be better for Fisher to stay than for him to leave.
TackleDummyParticipantHILL games 8-15 (includes games against 2 top 10 defenses):
qb rating 91.6, TDs 4.4%, Ints 2.2%Just wondering. What is Hill’s record against the two top 10 defenses?
December 26, 2014 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14751TackleDummyParticipantIt seems to me that Gordon’s article is a poor rehash of Gregg Rosenthal article. Nothing new added and is poorly worded. Gordon, for example, talks about a top 5 then list’s Rosenthal’s trade cantidates.
December 26, 2014 at 5:04 pm in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14747TackleDummyParticipantI don’t like any single one of them. Apparently they don’t either, cause the talk from the Rams is sticking with Bradford.
It depends on what you mean by “like”. If you are talking about liking them as a good #1 qb, someone who could compete with a healthy Bradford, then I don’t like any of them either. However, if you are talking about a #2 qb who could come in and play well if Bradford goes down again then I think any of them could be that guy. I am looking for someone who is better than either Hill or Davis. Of those mentioned in the original article I think there are several who could fill that bill. I do not think any rookie could do that in 2015.
I don’t know anybody who does not think that the Rams need to get the best qb possible to backup Bradford. There is too much risk not to do so.
December 26, 2014 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14742TackleDummyParticipantThe answer is obvious — Sign Geno Smith. Draft Kevin White.
Then just start the WVU QB and the three WVU WRs.Actually, Geno Smith is one that I think could be a good choice. Two others I like would be Mike Glennon and EJ Manuel. All three of these would have to be obtained in a trade. But all three of them would be, IMO, a significant upgrade to Hill or Davis.
Of the free agents, Mark Sanchez, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder, and Blaine Gabbert are names that interest me. It just depends on what Fisher and Shotty thinks.
TackleDummyParticipantThanks ZN.
I got my information from an interview of Saffold where he said he would have his shoulder scoped after the season. He said it mater of factly as though it would be almost nothing. What you (zn) found supports that. And you can see why he did not to do it if he could get by through the season. He missed parts of two games if my memory serves me correctly. Had he had the surgery it would have been half of the season. And the sucess rate you quoted sounds very couraging. 90% is a good number for something like that.
TackleDummyParticipantDecember 26, 2014 at 10:29 am in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14730TackleDummyParticipantLooking at the names on the list, there is no good option this year.
Just get a fairly solid guy and build the offensive line.
To me that’s the thing to do this year–don’t trade for a Cutler and give him huge money–invest in a free agent guard or center–then draft a good one and another one.
Try to resign Hill and Bradford at a fair price–even Davis and go with that three-headed monster behind a better line.
I do want them drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round.
But this is not a QB year for them. Their best hope is that Bradford suddenly becomes Iron Man and can finally claim the throne and be steady. The other options all stink.
Build the O-line.
Pretty much as I see it. I also don’t like the Cutler idea. There may be a couple of players in the “available” list that would be better than Hill or Davis. That would be up to Fisher and Snead. And I also would like a high draft choice for a qb but only if there is one that the Rams could draft without reaching too much. The best hope still seems to be Bradford.
December 25, 2014 at 11:37 pm in reply to: Russ Lande explains why cutting ties with Bradford is best option for Rams #14719TackleDummyParticipantThere are those who would have the Rams sign a “starter ready” quarterback for 2015. I concur to a point. And that point is that I do not know who that might be.
I don’t think it will be a rookie. The only rookies who might be starter ready would be Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston. And even if they were thrust into a starter role they would be prone to rookie mistakes. (BTW. Shotty would be an excellent OC to guide a qb for the Rams. He has done it before with a not so talented rookie.) Mariota and Winston are expected by some to taken #1 and #2 in the draft. Not likely they could be had by the Rams. No other rookie qb would be ready to start in 2015. Having said that, I would like for the Rams to draft a qb in the first or second round. It is just that he will not be the starter next year.
As I look at the vets that might be available, I am not sure there is a good one in the bunch. They all have big time flaws. That is why they are available. I do think there might be two or three who would be significantly better that either Hill or Davis. I would like for the Rams to go hard after one of those. But do not expect anything great of whoever it is. And because whoever it is will have flaws many of the board will not approve of him.
That leaves the third option. Sign Bradford to a revised contract. Not a one year contract, but a three or four year contract with major per game incentives. This would protect the Rams in that they would not have to pay him if he doesn’t play. And it would assure Bradford that if he is able to play he would be played. Bradford, if he is cleared to play by the medical staff, would be a better choice than either an available vet or a rookie. And it would give the Rams a chance to have a good qb leading the offense.
