So as of right now Austin Davis has as many wins this season as Drew Brees and Tom Brady combined."Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantTHAT’S going to be a good question.
My guess is that Fisher goes back to Hill but if Hill struggles, I can see him getting a quick hook and that won’t be because of injury.

PA RamParticipantBucs D line is hurting. Hopefully the Rams line can give Davis the protection when he needs it and they can move the ball on the ground.
If they can score 17 points they can win this game.
Unless…they turn the ball over. If that happens they lose.

This just proves it has been a fake injury all along.
Fisher: “Yeah–we’re checking out Shaun’s shoulder to see if he can go.”
Schefter: “I thought it was his quad?”
Fisher: “Uh…yeah–quad..shoulder…either one.”

Turns out Robert Quinn’s extension is actually a new 6-year deal worth $65.6M total. Means new money is $14.2M per year (vs Watt’s $16.6M)"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI agree, wv.
The way offenses are going to play the Rams will limit what the line is able to do–and add to that fact that the refs do not care if Robert Quinn is held or not, and you make it very difficult. They will force the Rams to slow down a bit to account for the short stuff, the screens, etc. This really depends on the OFFENSE. If the offense can get big leads everything changes. But I’m not holding my breath on that one.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantIn your opinion, should the Rams have drafted a qb high in the last draft?
Well, that depends on what you mean by “high”. In round 1? No.
In round 2? Maybe. Garoppolo was available and I like him. He looked good in preseason–some real potential. However, I liked the Joyner pick so I’m not complaining. It made sense.
But this is all hindsight of course.
The other QBs–the Aaron Murrays and Zach mettenbergers and Mccarrons all went in the 5th or 6th round.
Would any of those guys help right now? Doubtful. No young guy would have been immediate help unless you’re taking Bortles at #2. And he isn’t starting.
But it would have been nice if they already HAD a good young prospect here. 2013s young QBs haven’t set the world on fire yet either. So who knows? If you look at the top prospects the last two drafts no one has established himself yet as a future superstar. So maybe Gilbert will be fine.
Did they seem set with a rehabbed Bradford and with Hill?
Yes. And no. Everyone knew they needed a young QB–it was no secret. Considering what happened–I think we all wish there would have been a Peyton Manning available in the 6th round but that wasn’t realistic. They were somewhat stuck.
Would you have drafted a qb high in the last draft anyway?
No. Not Bortles or Bridgewater. If you draft that guy you’re telling Sam, it’s over. Next year…..

September 11, 2014 at 11:03 am in reply to: Bernie: Rams' plight is a mix of bad luck, poor decisions #6933PA RamParticipantThe one draft pick I really wasn’t crazy about was Tre Mason.
I thought Cunningham had shown enough to be a very capable back-up for Stacy. I didn’t like spending that third round pick on another running back–and it appears one who will need to develop.
Other than that, I have no problem with the draft picks. Yes–I would have liked a QB by the 4th or 5th round–but I’m not sure that whoever they got would have been any better than Gilbert. But getting a quality young guy to develop should have been a higher priority considering Bradford’s woes.

PA RamParticipantLOL!
You got me there, RM.
I had a baaaaaad feeling about that game.
I play in a pool at work and the age old dilemma in these things is picking with your head or your heart.
I lost a lot of money picking with my heart.
For the record, I would have been happy to lose had the Rams won. I’d prefer that. But….I fear I may be picking more games against them and hoping they make me look like an idiot–no difficult feat.
I’d just love to know for sure who is playing quarterback this week.

EARTH CITY, Mo. — In search of ways to negate the St. Louis Rams’ talented pass rush in the season opener, the Minnesota Vikings offered a basic yet effective game plan. The idea was simple: ends Robert Quinn and Chris Long and defensive tackles Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers can’t sack the quarterback if he doesn’t have the ball. So Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel rarely took anything more than a three-step drop as he got the ball out quickly and efficiently all day long.
Matt Cassel got rid of the ball on three-step drops, neutralizing the Rams’ powerful pass rush.
By the time the day was done, Cassel had dropped back to pass 26 times with 25 pass attempts. Of those 25 pass attempts, only three traveled 10 yards or further in the air, with the only completion going to receiver Greg Jennings for 18 yards. That means Cassel was 16-of-22 on throws of less than 10 yards for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.Of all 32 starting quarterbacks in week 1, Cassel averaged the fewest yards in the air per attempt, with each throw traveling just 4.36 yards in the air. It wasn’t overly exciting, but it sure was effective.
“When you have a great pass rusher like we have with Robert on the edge, you are going to get stuff like that, so we have to be prepared for stuff like that all season,” Brockers said.
Indeed, there’s little reason to think that any team would willingly put its quarterback in harm’s way. Along the way, the Rams certainly figure to play some teams with better lines, better quarterbacks and better receivers available to push the ball down the field. But in most cases, the Vikings offered a strong blueprint on how to run the ball and mix in the short passing game to have success against Gregg Williams’ defense.
With Cassel getting the ball out so quickly, ESPN Stats & Information had the Rams down for just three disruptions on Cassel’s 26 drop backs, with the lone sack coming from a missed snap exchange. Likewise, Cassel’s average pass was coming out in just 2.24 seconds, fourth fastest in the league in week 1.
“We knew going in that we were going to be challenged with their rush, so I think that we were trying to slow that rush down throughout the course of the first half,” Cassel said. “Obviously, we had our hiccups as an offensive unit, but all in all we made some big plays. We took advantage of some situations and like I said, any time the defense plays the way that they do, it usually goes pretty well for us altogether.”
For the Rams to rev the pass rush, they’ll have to be more aggressive in coverage near the line of scrimmage and more aware of screens and quick dumpoffs as the weeks roll on. Teams around the NFL love to play copycat when something works, so until the Rams prove they can stop the short passing game, it’s safe to assume other teams will continue to try it.

PA RamParticipantIf Hill can’t go, I guess they go with Davis/ Gilbert this week? Or do they throw Keenum out there with something limited?
Maybe they use Hill as back-up?
Gonna be interesting.
And if this becomes a season long issue and another QB doesn’t step up–we’re looking at 2 or 3 wins.

That is a very disturbed dude and the NFL is better off without him—actually society is better off without him.

PA RamParticipantIf there isn’t going to be a repeat of this week the offense will have to move the ball and keep the defense off the field. Turnovers, three and outs or penalty killing drives will put a difficult burden on the defense in a warm environment.
They’ll wear down.
It won’t be pretty.
In order for this run offense to be effective the line will have to play much better and the Rams will have to kill some teams with passes. Otherwise it’s going to be a close to the line, blitzing defense week in and week out. Until the Rams beat it they’ll continue to see it.
I know I’m stating the obvious but..it’s all I got.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantNot sure how you equate they need a giant ground game for just Davis. They need a ground game period. Which they did not really have on Sunday against the Vikes. Davis has shown he can manage an offense. Not sure why you are so down on him.
Grits
GRITS, when Davis throws the ball it looks like he tossed a feather in the air—he has a very weak arm. His pocket awareness is non-existent. For all his mobility it looked like his feet were in cement.
Say what you want about Hill–he can throw the ball better than Davis.
Neither QB was playing behind a decent line yesterday but Davis looked clueless.
As for the running game–I agree they HAVE to do that. I write about that repeatedly.
But I have so little confidence in Davis to make any throw. My point is that the running game is even MORE important.
I know you like Davis–and I know he had some pre season moments against second and third stringers–but he didn’t look to me like he could manage much yesterday.

PA RamParticipantIf Hill is healthy and can play I believe the Rams will win.
If he isn’t…
I’d take Tampa.
I believe the Rams will go into Tampa VERY angry–and they also do not have to deal with Adrian Peterson. Doug Martin was shut down yesterday by the Panthers. Yes–Evans and Jackson are challenging but with less of a run threat than the Vikes, I can see the defense able to pin their ears back and go. I know there will be more of the quick screens and so forth, but this is a MUST win game.
But, as I said–if they are stuck with Davis, they will need a giant ground and pound effort to win this game.

PA RamParticipantThe holding on Quinn that’s almost never called gets me too.
They have to practically tackle him for it to count.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantThe question is what happens this week?
If Hill can’t go and Keenum isn’t ready that leaves…well…that basically leaves little hope in Tampa.
Why does it feel like Rams players are made of glass?
In any case, I don’t know what really happened–although if Fisher pulled him for an interception than Fisher is in meltdown mode.
