Great note from RB Zach Evans today: Picking up coaching tips and corrections in film and on field from position coach Ron Gould even when he’s giving that info to previous starters. Evans has been on scout team but is gleaning info where he can. Was also headed to extra film.

Long speed is awesome. Versatile. Lot of potential.

Steelers are 30th on offensive yards, 30th on scoring.

20th on defensive points allowed, 30th on defensive yards allowed.

They are however 9th in sack percentage on defense. TJ Watt already has 8 sacks on the season.

But they make up for it by being both 27th in rushing offense and 27th in rushing defense.

So look for the Rams to throw it a lot. 😎

The Rams are 15-10-2 all time against the Steelers.

They started out 12-1-2 against them. The Steelers have owned them since the Super Bowl.

Last time the Rams beat the Steelers was 20 years ago.

I was about to correct you and remind you of when Torry Holt had that huge first half against the Steelers in Pittsburgh and the Rams won with relative ease. Then I remembered where I was living when I watched that game. Then I remembered in what year I was living there. Then I realized that it was in fact 20 years ago. Then I got depressed.

seriously. i’ll be so annoyed if that happens. not just because it would play into the steelers’ strength. but if they do give evans a significant amount of playing time his biggest question mark is supposed to be his pass blocking. let evans run the ball.

Evans is a natural runner with three-down starting potential for the NFL. The first trait that jumps out about Evans is his speed. He is a fast back with an explosive first-step and a burst to the second level. He can run past defenders, making him a threat to take any carry or reception down the field for a huge gain. In the NFL, Evans will be a threat to break off long runs thanks to possessing rare quickness for a starting back.

On top of being fast, Evans is an instinctive runner. He displays impressive vision, body lean, and patience, plus he runs behind his pads. Evans sets up blocks and uses his speed to dart through holes before they close. Defenders really struggle to get a hold of Evans, who has great feet that make him very elusive. He is sudden with his ability to cut and change direction. Assisted by that direction-changing talent, Evans can create for himself and help his line when blocking assignments are missed.

While Evans is not a big back, he does have some strength to his build and is able to break tackles while picking up yards after contact. He is not overpowering for the next level, but he will be able to shed tackles and get additional yards. Evans goes through defenders while falling forward to finish runs well also.

Evans is suited for the passing-driven NFL because he is a capable receiving back. Evans runs good routes out of the backfield and has soft hands. All college backs need to be coached up and groomed for blitz protection in the pros, and Evans will have that learning curve as well.

Evans has the physical talent to be a starter in the NFL, but his size and durability could restrict his availability. It would not be surprising if Evans is injury-prone and frustrates his team by going in and out of the lineup. In the 2023 NFL Draft, Evans has the potential to be a second-day pick.

Player Comparison: D’Andre Swift. Evans’ speed, receiving ability, and running style compare well with Swift’s. Both are big-play threats who are capable of being dangerous playmakers. They also have a tendency to get dinged up and miss time to the point of frustration.

Steelers: 32nd ranked red zone offense
Rams: 8th ranked red zone defense.
Offense can’t beat itself with turnovers.

outside of the 49ers game, the rams defense has held offenses to just 17.4 points per game on avg, which is solid top 10 territory. sunday the rams defense faces the steelers’ #30 scoring offense (they dropped a spot after last night’s game). hopefully this bodes very well.

nothing stands out too much there. but his agility numbers are very good.

    shorts shuttle – 4.25. 3-cone – 6.89.

and then it’ll come down to instincts. it should be pretty apparent pretty quickly if he can cut it at this level.

It’s the age old axiom, “don’t turn the ball over”–that is key this week. The Steelers have 5 interceptions and 6 fumble recoveries. They have generated 300 yards of offense in two games this season (340 in wk 3 and 311 in wk 5). They have allowed 361 or more in every game, 400 plus 3 times. They beat Cleveland on a fumble return TD late in the game (7:06 left in 4th) and scored twice in the last 4 minutes vs Baltimore, thanks to an interception and a fumble recovery to win by 7. They have 5 offensive TDs in 5 games. You are what your record says you are but these guys should be 1-4.

They have had a week off (the first of 2 opponents with that luxury the next two games) to get ready for this game.

It’s a safe bet we’re going to amass 300 yards plus of offense and we’re 3-1 when that happens. In that 1 loss we were -2 in turnovers. So, take care of the ball and it should end with a “W”.

The Steelers have allowed an average of 144 yards on the ground but we’re down 2 RBs. They’ve allowed 8 TD passes and 3 TD runs along with 10 FGs. They do have 6 turnovers in 5 games so getting a takeaway or 2 will go a long way.

Lastly, the terrible towels travel well so there should be ample Steeler fans in the seats.
