Rams are re-signing G Kevin Dotson to sign a three-year, $48 million deal that includes $32 million guaranteed, as @Schultz_Report also reported.

Les Snead has made several great trades as the general manager of the Rams. Not sure where Kevin Dotson trade ranks, but that was a big win for the front office. Saw a need at guard and found a player available that fit the new scheme. Made a HUGE difference.

Low-key fantastic trade at the cutdown deadline last summer for Les Snead. Helped solidly the OL.

According to Pro Football Focus, Dotson boasted a pass-blocking efficiency grade of 97.3 last season. That was among the tops for interior linemen in the NFL. The interior of the Rams’ offensive line allowed only eight of the 30 sacks Stafford took a season ago. That’s darn good stuff.

What’s more impressive is the performance of Dotson and the Rams’ offensive line in blocking for Williams on the ground. He became the first player since 1937 to finish in the top-three of the NFL in rushing (1,144 yards) despite missing four or more games to injury.

Williams also ranked second behind Christian McCaffrey with 3.0 yards per rush before contact. That’s an obvious testament to what Kevin Dotson and the offensive line did on the ground.

I’m glad the Rams were flexible with this. Usually they are about as likely to pay a guard as they are to pay a safety. But Dotson is a different animal, so regular formulas don’t apply. Now they are shaping up to have a great IOL. And with a great IOL, you can get by with just “solid” and not necessarily “elite” at LOT.

Think of the 2023 running game. Have you ever seen the Rams dominate running up the gut the way they did? There were times when all they had to do was hand off to Wms and it was 5 yards every pop.

dare i say the greatest interior oline i’ve seen since watching the rams?

You know, that’s possible. I mean I don’t know how long you have followed the Rams, but yes that’s possible. At least since Mack and Harrah, who last played together in 1978.

You don’t need a great combined IOL to have a great OL, but if you do have a great IOL, it makes a huge difference.

    since 95 so 29 years.

i do remember in the past snead talking about building the oline from the inside out. but i was a little worried there for a minute. wasn’t sure they’d pull through trigger but i’m glad they did.

i just want to see avila continue to make progress on the left side. re-sign jackson. i don’t know what happens at center. maybe bring shelton back. maybe draft powers-johnson after a trade down?

    This is great news.

Sign Shelton, extend Jackson, and you have what has to be considered long-term continuity on the OL for the salary cap age. That line was pretty good last year, and will be better this year.

Draft for depth, and eventual replacement of Havenstein, and they’re set there. I wouldn’t mind Powers-Johnson at all, but they already have a proven commodity in Shelton, and greater needs elsewhere. So keep Shelton, and get either the best Edge or CB at 19, and go from there.

Kevin Dotson ranked as one of the top guards in the NFL last season and played essentially every meaningful snap for the #Rams. Plus, he’s only 27 years old. Big win for both sides.

Yeah, I had pretty much written off Dotson returning to the Rams as soon the reports came out that he’d be testing the market. So glad that he’s back. I wonder what’s going to happen with Shelton.

Ok, great.   But i’m still pissed-off that Zack Martin wasn’t a Ram.

    From https://www.lafbnetwork.com/grade-los-angeles-rams-kevin-dotson-signing/

Matt Miller, NFL analyst, is grading many of the free agency moves for ESPN. The Los Angeles Rams made their first big move in free agency when they re-signed Kevin Dotson to a Three-year, $48 million contract with $32 million guaranteed.

Miller largely praised the move, writing

    Kevin Dotson Contract Grade: B
The Rams are back to building through the draft and smart free agent signings, like this one, after years of ring chasing by acquiring pricey veterans via trades and free agency. Dotson is the type of cornerstone linemen savvy teams acquire for cheap and re-sign at market value contracts. Instead of going after an [Michael] Onwenu-type player, the Rams stay in-house with an ascending veteran who proved his worth in 2023.

i’m most heartened by the fact that he wanted to be here. he could have tested the market and squeezed some more money out of another team. but he was happy in la. he likes this team. and also. the rams didn’t try to play any games with him. they valued him. they showed that with the contract they offered him. and that was enough for him to just sign the contract and stay and try to build on what he and the team accomplished last season. i think that can only have a positive effect on how dotson and the team approach 2024.

    Jonah Jackson said something similar.

    His agent called.

“He was like, ‘What do you think of Los Angeles?’ and I was like, ‘Doesn’t sound too shabby,'” Jackson said. “We talked about it. It sounded like the right move – good weather, good place to be, good winning culture, great staff. Everything overall was just a plus, so we couldn’t deny that.”

Jackson acknowledged he had other opportunities to weigh in free agency, but the familiarity – as well as the offer – the Rams presented made it too good to pass up.

“Once I heard the Rams were willing to do what they did and be able to go somewhere and potentially win it all, there was no denying it,” he said. “There were some teams, maybe we could have done some more, but I wanted the perfect balance of being able to set my family up for life and be able to win football games.”

I was hoping the culture would be a draw to FA, and it looks like it is. For some of them, anyway.

the rams have a nice mix of accomplishment but also guys who are still hungry and motivated.  they’re content but not complacent.  on the one hand you got guys like donald and stafford.  guys who have accomplished so much.  but then you got guys like kyren williams, puka, and dotson and turner and young.  and now jackson.  guys who are on the cusp of hitting their stride but still have so much to prove.  i can see why a player who wants to win championships would be attracted to a team like this.  snead and mcvay have done a job here.
