    The Rams and 2017 AP Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald have agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension, locking him in with Los Angeles through the 2024 season.

    Since he entered the league as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2014 draft, Donald has been one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL. He was named the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year after setting a new franchise rookie record with 9.0 sacks that season, also recording a pair of forced fumbles and 18 tackles for loss.

    Donald has only improved since his rookie year, earning his first AP Defensive Player of the Year award for his outstanding 2017. Though Donald played only 14 games, he tallied 11.0 sacks, a career-high five forced fumbles, and led the league with 91 quarterback pressures according to Pro Football Focus.

    In all, Donald has recorded 39.0 sacks in his first four years as a pro — leading all interior linemen in that category since 2014.

    Back in college, Donald earned the the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Trophy, Outland Trophy, and Rotary Lombardi Award after his senior season at Pitt. He recorded 11.0 sacks and 28.5 tackles for loss in that 2013 season.

    Donald agreeing to an extension is the first step in his return to the club — just in time for the season opener on Sept. 10 against Oakland. Head coach Sean McVay has said the ideal timeline for Donald to play Week 1 was to have him report by the end of the week. With that coming to pass, the Rams’ defense will feature a dynamic attack up front led by Donald, Ndamukong Suh, and Michael Brockers.

    Even with the record-breaking deal, Aaron Donald’s salary-cap number for the 2018 season rises from $6.892 million to $8.892 million. Rams get their man without suffocating impact to their salary cap this season.

    Although we don’t have the exact terms, we can break it down a bit.
    .
    This contract was modeled on von Miller’s contract. imo The overall numbers, adjusted for an est salary cap, fit. imo
    .
    The guaranteed money is more in line with Suh’s guarantees. imo
    .
    I think it is a good contract for the team and the player.

    #Rams deserve major props. Donald, Gurley and Cooks were core pieces they wanted to lock in long-term – along with Goff and Peters = and they did that. There is room to now take care of Peters and Goff eventually. Plus Havenstein is locked in. Rams as set as anyone moving forward

    They’ve planned and executed their salary cap to accomodate a talented, young, locked-in foundation for the forseeable future. People sometimes can’t see the forrest for the trees. But in Rams case, the space and flexibility was also there for all this.

    Aaron Donald just set Khalil Mack’s salary floor. Remember high end contracts are made to be surpassed. Justin Houston (represented by Joel Segal who is also Khalil Mack’s agent) got $101M/6 years in 2015 when J.J. Watt was at $100M/6 years (new $$). Look for Segal to top Donald.

    It works out to an average of 22.5 per year for 6 years (I believe) with a solid amount of guaranteed money. Provided he stays healthy, this should work out fairly well for cap management down the road.

    What might the rams do with the extra cap savings for this year with the two restructures this week. I’m guessing another contract extension – perhaps a cornerback.

    Or a new player like a backup QB. Never been a Mannion fan (as a pro QB) and i’m an Oregon state grad who watches a lot of PAC 12 football.

    That’s possible.

    Though right now we don’t really know how much they have in cap space after the 2 re-structures.

    As I understand it, $2 million of that went to Donald.

    They evidently have something else in mind.

    Kevin Demoff declined to comment on the Donald negotiations. But he said the Whitworth and Woods contracts were not restructured “solely” because of that situation.

    Communication is so important in these contract negotiations. McVay kept an open and active dialogue with Donald throughout the off-season. Meanwhile, the LA front office trio got on planes and took multiple trips to Atlanta to speak w/ 99’s agents in person. It matters.

    Aaron Donald = Transcendent Player, comparable early career to J.J. Watt.

    From my August 1, 2018, camp report

    I spot Kevin Demoff slowly strolling through. No one says anything and finally, I call him over because no one is saying anything. He was very personable and I was making small talk with him as he was looking down signing people’s hats etc and I say to him — in full BS mode–: “I have a good source that says the final number is 6 years $22,555,522 per year” “The palindrome made me know it was legitimate”.

    His head literally snapped up and he turns to me and holds a stare for just a second. It was like he looked at me like “how the @#$%& does this guy have this information?”

    Maybe it was just him running the figure I threw out to confirm it was, indeed, a palindrome — one of his signature trademarks — but his look was like I just guessed his social security number.

    I add “the 6th year is voidable right? allows you to stretch out the cap hit?” He kind of chuckles.

    Of course, I could be misreading him but I have seen that look before when you bust someone on the witness stand. So, my new prediction is Aaron Donald $22,555,522 per year for 6 years – 6th year voidable yes

    My opinion:
    Rams won on length of contract, and money per year. The money equals what you would pay a franchise DE. 10.4% of the est Cap.
    Donald won on guaranteed money, and bonus money upfront. He gets a large portion of money early in the contract. Almost 2/3 of the gross amount.
    In the end, the contract was good for both sides. imo

    Notice those 2 things are the Kroenke advantage. You need real live actual cash upfront to pull off both a bonus and the guarantees.

    So it looks to me like AD conceded stuff on the years and annual average and took the bonus and guaranteed money instead.

    And again that’s all Kroenke. He actually directly paid for an advantage that way.
