McVay says LT Whitworth and C Sullivan also will not play in Saturday’s game vs. Houston. RT Rob Havenstein tweaked his ankle, and that may keep him out for Saturday.==
Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
Not a guarantee #Rams Jared Goff will play Saturday given tweak to Rob Havenstein’s abkle and Andrew Whitworth not playing according to Sean McVaySean McVay told me the quiality of defense of #Texans and the scaled back playbook the #Rams would use w/O both starting OT’s would likely diminish any benefit to Jared even playing.
Basically the risk outweighs the reward.
FYI: #Rams rookie OLB Obo Okoronkwo was working off to the side today getting some running/sprinting in.

Todd Gurley will not play Saturday, McVay saidTodd Gurley is disappointed not to play in preseason games in the same way I’m disappointed I didn’t get a speeding ticket this morning.

Goff said that he was ready to play but if he does not play in preseason he’ll be fine going into season opener.==

In any preseason setting, Jared Goff would be facing an inherently lesser defense than he sees every day in practice, AND he’d be running dumbed down vanilla stuff. The only thing he misses out on this weekend is a live pass rush. Who wanted him to get hit, anyway?
McVay and Phillips duel constantly throughout camp. Ultra-competitive. They do as much/more situational team stuff as anyone.
Now, practice can never simulate what it’s like on Sundays. But quite frankly, neither can a couple drives in the preseason.

Who is the most ideal option to start opposite Samson Ebukam at outside linebacker? Matt Longacre … if he’s healthy for the opener and can hold up over a 16-game schedule. But those are two big ifs.Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
To be clear Samson Ebukam has looked good on one side. But injuries have really put the other side in flux==

August 23, 2018 at 7:15 pm #89768canadaramParticipantI am relieved that Goff and Gurley should be starting the season healthy. However, I reserve the right to whine and complain if they start off slowly. I will also claim that I was against resting them from the beginning.
August 23, 2018 at 8:03 pm #89770ZooeyModeratorWell, if Goff’s not playing, I’m not playing.
That’s final.

McVay is looking at PS in a fresh modern way. If Rams start fresh, healthy, and winning. Watch other teams mimic him.Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
That’s not what’s going on at allIf Goff doesn’t play McVay’s hand will have been forced by Havenstein’s ankle. In McVay’s ideal world Goff playsz
Goff would have played last week if opponent wasn’t their season opening opponent.
The scheduling of the #Raiders game and Havenstein tweaking the ankle this week dealt #Rams a bad hand of cards.
Not ideal but given the potential circumstances it’s the right call

Sean McVay on Jared Goff potentially going the entire preseason without a snap: “I think you’ve got to weigh a lot of different things. We’re playing a lot of football out here… this isn’t like an easy answer because there’s a lot of layers to it…==
Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
That said…it’s preseason. All you can do is get hurt. Plus, it’s the same McVay offense as last year, with 10/11 of the same guys. I still think you’d prefer them seeing a full-speed defense before Sept. 10, but not with three backup offensive linemen. It appears that, in a wild coincidence, the only two NFL starting QBs who might miss the entire preseason are Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. All others either have played or are scheduled to this week (Brees, Roethlisberger). Wentz is coming off a major knee injury.

I find the debate Sean McVay is grappling with, about whether to play his most important players during a meaningless preseason game, to be really fascinating. Personally, I’ve always thought, with the increase in team v. team practice, that the games aren’t worth the risk.==
Gary Klein@LATimesklein
Todd Gurley on preseason: “I’m kind of happy not to be playing in it, but it’s definitely good for some guys as well too. Some guys just like being out there to get a feel for it and to see. But not this guy.”Jared Goff said if he doesn’t play in the preseason, and doesn’t absorb a hit to get acclimated, he’ll be fine: “I’ll get hit plenty this year. I’ll get adjusted to it eventually.”

We may be on the front end of a new golden age of QBs . . . Baker Mayfield, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, Jimmy Garoppolo, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson, Carson Wentz, Mitchell Trubisky—
Benjamin Allbright@AllbrightNFL
Everyone talking about Teddy Bridgewater in a potential trade, quietly the RG3 market might be just as big.==
Sam Monson@PFF_Sam
Nick Foles may have the widest spectrum of potential play of any QB in the NFL.He can be fantastic or utterly terrible in a given week.

Edge defender Justin Lawler earned a 90.7 overall grade in his final season at SMU and continues to impress in the preseason #LARams:August 24, 2018 at 2:07 am #89777znModeratormax
What happened is this (according to Vinny). The plan coming out of game 2 was to sit AW and play NB and Hav. So AW didn’t get the prep work for game 3, it went to NB. Then Hav tweaked his ankle late Monday and didn’t realize until Tuesday that he shouldn’t practice. Then it was too late to get AW back on board and move NB to RT. Plus they want to get NB as much work at LT as possible to prep for regular season backup roll.
Honestly, all this start Goff stuff is way overblown, IMO. The most important thing coming out of it is NB being a very encouraging development. Actually, if he develops into a legit LT, it’s a rare feat.

Max: follow-up
Also, Vinny told me the coaches are extremely confident in Noteboom. His exact words were Noteboom is “VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE.” And Allen also.
