What it looks like to me is that a bunch of young defenders showed up.

Mannion looked much better, Hodge was impressive, the D was playing like they had a bunch of free agent all-pros come in camp and share their knowledge. JFM stands out. At least this game was apples to apples, definitely more fun than last week.

I am not at all comfortable about the Rams back-up QB situation. I’d probably keep Allen over Mannion at this point.

Mannion is so sloooow. And his accuracy is questionable at best. Hodge made him look good on that deep throw that was up for grabs basically, and he’s lucky that the Oakland defender stepped out of bounds on the other one. Even his shorter passes are off. He almost got one receiver killed leading him into a defender. Allen throws a better ball. He’s also more mobile. Mannion has had four years now and he doesn’t look better than this? Time to move on.

Noteboom has great potential but he isn’t there yet. He got away with an obvious hold on the 3rd and 4, and if he had to face better edge rushers there were occassions where the QB would have been killed. But the potential is there. You can see it. I’m very happy with this pick.

Franklin-Myers looks very promising. Again, he still has to get better. He missed reacting to a draw on a few occassions but I like what I see in him.

What happened to Justin Davis? Was he hurt? Why was Holley playing?

    My very brightest spots:

Bryce Hager. He had a terrific game. He was really good iun coverage and pursuing the football and seems to have a nose for things.

Hodge. This kid is amazing. What a battler for the ball. He needs to work on his separation a bit but he battles for that football. I’m just not sure there is any room for him on the team.

John Kelly. The Rams just flat out hit on this pick. He should surpass Malcolm Brown on the depth chart. Exciting hard runner.

Micah Kiser. He was in on a lot of plays. He’s still learning but he can really be a nice piece of the linebacker depth.

    Another note:

That was a crap call on Mixon. He did everything right IMO. If you call that then it’s hard to play football.

Lastly, it was noted by Lindsey Thiery that Mcvay may not play Goff or Gurley at all this pre-season. On one hand, I get it, I like it. On another, I do worry if they will be ready for opening day or if that may lead to a slow start. I think I’d play them at least a quarter next week. It’s a risk, yes. But if Rodgers and Brady can play, so can Goff. Still, I think McVay knows he doesn’t have a viable back-up and this team has a LOT of money invested in THIS year. He can’t blow that in pre-season.

    that was great.

wow. i have nothing that good to contribute.

i agree that mannion looked not very good. i think the rams are in trouble if goff goes down.

and yeah, defense looked good. real good. even without starters. then again. they were going against backups. so…

but what could we expect considering the rams face off against the raiders in week 1?

    that’s it. that’s all i got.

Noteboom has great potential….You can see it. I’m very happy with this pick.

    Franklin-Myers looks very promising.

John Kelly. The Rams just flat out hit on this pick.

So, and it’s still early, you have them hitting on 4 picks and possibly a UDFA.

    I agree with all that.

If all that works out, 4 picks without a 1st or 2nd rounder is really good. And we’re hearing some good things about Brian Allen, too. Obo we don’t know about cause he’s hurt.

Mannion to me won’t be THAT bad when he’s paired with Gurley and the starting OL. No worse than Clemens, Hill, or Davis, and probably better than the “can melt down a couple of times a year” version of Foles they had–but in better circumstances than any of those guys. This is NOT an optimistic take…or not overly so…they clearly aren’t a playoff team with Mannion, but he would not only have more around him than Clemens/Hill/Davis did, including as I said Gurley, he would also have a more talented offensive coach who could probably set him up to be at least okay.

The way I see it, if ARZ could win 4 out of 5 with Drew Stanton in 2016/2017 while completing 47% of his passes, getting an avg. qb rating of 61.04, and throwing as many INTs as TDs, then I don’t write off McVay pulling out some wins with Mannion. In fact, Mannion’s numbers in game 17 last year without the starters were better than what I just listed for Stanton’s last 5 games with ARZ.

Heck last summer in the pre-season Mannion was 49 of 76 (64+ %) for only 2 TDs but 0 INTs. That’s modest on the TD side, but it’s not catastrophic. Has he regressed from that? (Maybe so, but…also maybe not.)

So I ain’t saying he’s Warner or Bulger on the bench, and maybe not even Keenum, BUT, I am just saying it’s not inevitably bleak.

And. Here’s hoping we never find out.

    Raider game

Watching Mannion and Allen play QB injured my eyes. I’d keep an eye on things in Pittsburgh. I’d be very interested in Landry Jones or Josh Dobbs. One of the two has to shake loose.

The line of Noteboom, Blythe, Allen, Brown, and whoever was at RT (Lucas or Williams?) was outstanding. And the Raiders weren’t running scrubs out there either. Noteboom was handling Arden Key with ease.

Kelly looks so much quicker than Brown. Brown just looks plodding right now.

I think Nate Holley is going to make the team and replace Cody Davis. He would have been a 4th or 5th round pick if not for that legal issue.

Franklin-Myers fits perfectly in Wade’s SDE role (5-tech). He’s got a similar body type and athletic profile to Antonio Smith, who did quite well in that role for Wade.

I think Ethan Westbrooks is going to have a nice year as our top DL off the bench. He won’t be forced to always play NT, which doesn’t suit his game well.

I’m not seeing it with Kiser right now. They were gashing us since he entered the game. But Kiser looks great on blitzes. Hager has looked quite good. It seems like he’ll be our #3 ILB. I’m guessing Wilson will be #4 with Kiser being #5.

You keep Thomas because he’s a special teams demon who is a good #5 WR. You keep Reynolds because he’s better than Hodge at this point in time. And McVay said a couple weeks ago how excited he is about Reynolds. I don’t think Hodge is going to make the team this year. . He’s showed flashes in the preseason, but he’s not ready for the big time yet. We’re not going to cut an All Pro returner (Cooper), a Pro Bowl caliber special teamer (Thomas), or a very talented WR we drafted in the 4th round last year who started while Woods was out (Reynolds). But he’ll stick on the practice squad. If he can develop the technical side of the game and prove his worth on special teams, he might end up on the active roster sooner than later.
