Will we get 2 high comp picks in 2019 for Sammy & Tru?

It all comes down to what a team gains vs what they lose during free agency….with the size contract being the most important variable.

Right now the Rams have lost 2 players who signed huge contracts. They would result in 3rds or 4ths….depending on the size of other free agent contracts.

However, if the Rams sign a player or players to similar size contracts, it could nullify the Watkins or Johnson losses.

We have to wait until free agency ends. But at this point it looks like i’s not likely that they would get nothing for Watkins…..in another day or two most of the big money contracts will be finished….and it doesn’t look like the Rams will be involved to that level…..so it’s highly probable that they’ll get good picks for Watkins/Johnson….but they might not necessarily be 3rds

Also, The loss of Carrier will count in the Rams favor…although he would only bring a 7th, or 6th at best. Any comp pick helps, especially since they can now be traded.

By the time the draft rolls around, the Rams will have a pretty good idea of what comp picks they could be getting in the 2019 draft…..that could allow Snead to make trades knowing those picks are coming…..that’s exactly what happened with the Goff trade……they knew they were getting high picks for Jenkins/McLeod so they were able to put together a trade deal that didn’t wipe out two drafts. Even with the trade they had 6 picks in 2016 and 8 picks in 2017.

I remember the compensation if we did not resign Watkins came up in conversation when we traded for him last year. If we do wind up netting two 3rd or 4th round picks for Watkins and Johnson, those might be used to get some decent interior offensive linemen.

Or to trade up and get back a 2nd rounder after trading theirs for Peters.

More on that. The value of 3rd rounders.

The 3rd round comp pick from 2016 was part of the Goff trade. That allowed them to use their own original 3rd rounder on Kupp.

It is true that for the most part in their history the Rams have not gotten high comp picks because they tended to sign, and not let go, high contract free agents.

As I said they can use picks like that to trade up. But even if they don’t the Rams with Snead have a good record in the 3rd round.

In terms of hitting on players in round 3 with Snead on board, since 2012 the Rams have had 8 3rd rounders. They hit on 5 of them.A hit rate of 62.6% is way above the norm for 3rd round picks league wide–which, according to my source, is 35%. That includes Tru, McDonald, Brown, Kupp, and Johnson. All starters. Johnson and Kupp are stand-out starters not just starters. Brown was part of an OL that was universally ranked highly in 2017. The 6th is Mannion and it’s not clear to me yet if he;s a hit, but his poor play behind a back-up OL in game 16 last year notwithstanding, at least he represents an affordable #2 qb who is probably as decent as any other #2 qb they could buy on the FA market. The 2 “misses” are gone for non-football reasons–Bailey (shot) and Mason (mental health).

    Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart

    link: https://overthecap.com/compensatory-draft-picks-cancellation-chart/

To add clarity to how the compensatory draft pick formula works, this page will contain a list of all Compensatory Free Agents lost and gained by each team, and illustrate which players are paired together for cancellation. Players that are projected to be eligible to earn their former team a compensatory pick are highlighted in their former team’s colors. Please note that this chart does not include potential “net-value” compensatory picks for teams that lose and gain an equal amount of CFAs, nor does it account for compensatory picks that may not be awarded due to falling below the 32-pick limit or exceeding the maximum of four per team.

    Sammy Watkins 3 $16,000,000
    Trumaine Johnson 3 $15,000,000
    Cody Davis 7 $2,500,000
    Derek Carrier 7 $1,833,333

I am glad that we are likely to get two high comp picks for Watkins and Tru, plus two late comp picks for Carrier and Davis. Carrier was basically a one year rental and we get the pick back.

I am kind of surprised we did not sign one free agent other than our own. Really thought we would get the Denver linebacker, but we killed it with the trades for Talib and Peters.
