Teams that lose opener go to playoffs only 25 percent of time

I think Seattle will have trouble this year, and i dont think they
will repeat — but i think they will look great at home,
as per usual. I’m guessing the Packers will get routed.

SEATTLE — The wizards at ESPN Stats & Information have dug up a few interesting tidbits entering tonight’s NFL season opener between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field.

So how important is Week 1? Since the postseason expanded to 12 teams in 1990, 54 percent of the teams that won the opener reached the playoffs, but only 25 percent of the teams that lost Game 1 made the playoffs. Of the 288 teams to reach the playoffs since 1990, 68 percent started the season with a victory.

The Seahawks hope to become the ninth team to repeat as Super Bowl champs and the first since the 2003-04 New England Patriots. However, the last eight Super Bowl champs failed to win a single playoff game, and the last two (the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens) failed to make the playoffs.

The Packers return to CenturyLink Field for the first time since the infamous “Fail Mary” play two years ago that gave the Seahawks a 14-12 victory on the final play. Since that game, the Seahawks have 23 wins in the regular season. Only the Denver Broncos have more at 25.

Is Wilson’s Play A Sign Of What’s Coming?

RENTON, Wash. — Yes, it was only preseason, but consider these stats when Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was on the field.

In 13 drives with Wilson calling plays, the Seahawks scored nine touchdowns, two fields goals and punted only once with no turnovers. That punt came on the first possession of the first preseason game at Denver.

Seattle would have scored on 12 consecutive drives with Wilson on the field if not for a 53-yard field goal attempt by Steven Hauschka that bounced off the upright.

Wilson was 33 of 42 passing (78.6 percent) for 437 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His passer rating was 133.8. He also rushed for three TDs.

It doesn’t get much better than that headed into the regular-season opener Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field.

“I’m thrilled about what we’re seeing,’’ Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Wilson. “He’s been so sharp. He’s in great control of what’s going on. He’s very comfortable and playing faster than he has at any time. He understands better what we want. He is getting the ball out of his hand quickly and he’s in tune with that better than ever.”

When asked about Wilson on Monday, receiver Percy Harvin just shook his head and said: “The sky’s the limit for that guy.”

Wilson said he just wants to keep improving.

“My goal is still to get the ball to the right guy at the right time,” Wilson said Tuesday. “I’m getting so quick on my reads. I’m reading the coverage so quickly and protections and all that. I’ve really grown a lot. Every day is a constant quest to learn something, a constant quest for knowledge. I think that’s why I’ve gotten better.”
