Now that JB is officially gone…that’s how it looks for this year. Unless they start a placeholder at ROT for a bit, like Washington or Bond.

    Nervous.

Look. It’s a big bet. Pretty impossible to tell how it will work out:

    * Robinson is proven capable in the run game, but questionable in pass blocking. He’s athletic, but you cannot count on a LOT until he begins to demonstrate the real stuff.

    * H.stein is a rookie. His power blocking is likely to be very good. He’s smart and compensates well. His athleticism is limited. And he has never faced NFL DLs.

What does that add up to?

And we will be highly suspect at OC and at LG.

I have a hard time believing that an OL this green will gel before the end of the year. And, I cannot believe it’s more than a toss up that THESE lower round OL are the right picks. With not one premier talent picked early.

    It’s a big bet. Enormous.

But, I am convinced that the FO has known for months that it would not sign more vet FAs on the OL. They were NOT going to sign JB or anyone else … except a swing guy as backup and for emergencies. Why?

Because they’ve committed to home-growing a young OL. JB or Blalock (sp?) would be obstacles to their development. I think it’s pretty clear: draft 4-5 power OL, throw them into the fire, and figure that at least 2 get it done. And trust one of the 3 youngsters to develop at OC.

Quit hoping for vet FA OL, guys. That’s not the plan. You can really see, looking back, that it was never their plan this off season.

What to do with that cap money?

I bet they spend it on defense.

By virtue of the absurd ...

Nervous and underwhelmed but since our QB may be a rental and our franchise RB can’t run I guess why not start rookies?

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

    Sprinkles are for winners.

They will spend their cap money on Defense. The only offensive FAs of note next year are Foles and Quick. Foles is the only possible high dollar player. imo There are 8 FAs on Defense that they probably would like to keep. The RFAs and Zeurlein are minimal.

We’ll be okay if the line stays healthy and if one of our three center candidates steps up.

That’s two big ifs. Too much to make me confident.

Back to the original topic, Robinson & Havenstein. Short answer, I am fine with them starting.

I’m feeling like the Rams are taking another mulligan year, frankly.

    Let’s go 2016.

    No way, dude.

I like the idea of a young, healthy, mauling, ornery OLine.

I like this team. Playoffs, this year.

Maybe even a Home playoff game. In St.Louis. O dear.

We’d need to run an abnormal amount to make it work I think. I don’t feel good about it.

Just 2-3 blown blocking assignments per game, and the Rams lose. How many times over the past couple of years have we said, “The Rams were in it until ______.”

It’s too many greenhorns. Saffold is the only vet. Robinson won’t be the main problem, but he’s still going to lose battles that he will win in another year. And three rookies?

They will probably rush the ball just fine. Maulers, as you say.

    And three rookies?

Well to be annoyingly exact, it’s not 3 rookies. The center will be Barnes, Jones, or Rhaney, none of whom of course are rookies.

AND this team likes its placeholders. They have several candidates to hold down the guard spot until Brown is ready. Or, ready-er. That’s anyone from Washinton to Bond to Reynolds to Unknown Player to be Named Later. I mean think of who they have used at guard so far since 2012—Turner, Smith, Williams. Is there someone on the roster at least as good as them? Could be, sure.

Now granted I did not just describe the 70s or 80s Rams OL.

But it is at least better than “3 rookies.”

    Technically. OK.

    But they are redshirted, basically.

If Barnes starts, it’s a bad sign, and if it’s Jones or Rhaney, it’s a rookie. Basically.

    At center, no less.

I don’t know about that on Barnes. That is, I don’t think anyone knows just yet. The complaint about Barnes is that he was physically overmatched when he played at the end of 2013. However, he reported to camp last summer bulked up and stronger. We didn’t get to see him, though, because he got injured (twice). So it’s possible he took a step. I don’t rule it out, anyway. On the 3 centers we don’t know (yet) what they have.

i think robinson and havenstein will be fine. havenstein comes from a school known for producing pro ready offensive linemen. he’s a three year starter. he’ll be ready. greg robinson is going in his second year. he’ll be in a run heavy offense. i’m not too worried.

it’s the middle that i’m worried about.

Well, you asked us all how we FEEL about it, so I thought we were going to be free to…emote. And if your going to invite us to open up and expose our vulnerabilities, and then just bludgeon us with your Vulcan sensibilities, then I’m going to ask you to leave this thread.

The best attribute for center is that he is smart. We should have that. Then you have 2 big athletic physical guards on both sides, Saffold and Brown. Saffold on the right side, cause Russ Tucker said that that is much harder to play than left guard and Saffold played his best there. imo

If Brown can’t hack it, well we all know Blalock is still out there and he played LG, if memory serves?

    Jokes aside, actually yer right.

Threads like this are supposed to be free-for-alls of different views, not “who’s right” death matches.

I’m not comfortable with it. Rather have a veteran at RT. But, yes, both could come into their own this year. I just have lots of doubts that the Rams will be successful on the interior AND outside … too many variables heading into this season.
