Rams are bringing back veteran running back Sony Michel. It’s a one-year deal, per source.

Michel is a great veteran presence to have in that group, which the Rams didn’t have to start last year and really could have used. He knows the system, is a total pro, and can take some of those complementary shorter-yardage snaps if needed. That’s what this seems like.

What I remember most about Michel is that although he has the physical talent to be a solid, no frills back, what stands out about him is that he’s a max-maximizer. He just uses his intelligence and work ethic to maximize his play–he’s alert, he’s well-studied, he knows all the minor details and it makes him a certain percent better than you might expect as a blocker, receiver, and even as a runner.

well. it woulda been hard going with the current group i’m guessing? especially when it comes to blocking?

i just hope that it doesn’t hinder the development of the younger running backs. i don’t think that it would. plus learning from a wily veteran like michel should help.

I’m ambivalent. I don’t profess to fully understand the move. I mean I appreciate the value of having a veteran presence for a position group that is pretty inexperienced who is also a solid third down back, but I am kind of surprised nonetheless.

If this helps Williams and Evans develop as professionals then I’m all for it. I guess that Akers could also benefit if he’s not threatened by Michel’s presence. Not that I am assuming that Akers would feel threatened. Just thinking out loud is all.
