Rams RT Rob Havenstein said even with competition within OL room, guys have been going out of their way to help each other, which has been “awesome to see.”He’s mentioned this to me before, but he also said they like each other, which also helps.

May 3, 2023 at 11:04 pm #144021canadaramParticipantHere’s my nonexpert wild guess is that Rypien will be the primary backup for the first part of the season until McVay and staff deem Bennett ready to dress on game day. I don’t say this because I hold Rypien in high esteem. I barely know anything about him other than what I saw on Christmas versus the Rams, which wasn’t much. I just think that he will be more prepared than Bennett come September, and I like that the Rams drafted Bennett where they did.

On paper, the Rams don’t look like Super Bowl contenders. However, they still do have Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp. If those three can stay healthy and some of their second-year players like Cobie Durant, Logan Bruss, Russ Yeast and Daniel Hardy can step up, the Rams could surprise some people.
And with 14 rookie draft picks, perhaps a few of them can become full-time starters right off the bat. There’s still a ton of work for the Rams to do before the season begins, but this is a young, hungry team in the NFC – a conference that’s on the weaker side right now.

𝒥𝒾𝓂 𝐸𝓋𝑒𝓇𝑒𝓉𝓉@Jim_EverettWith Rookie players, everyone wants to know the time line when their capable of starting and being an asset not a liability. For most positions, it becomes obvious that the Rook is better than the Vet and the change is made. However, for QBs it gets a bit more complicated because of unmeasurable traits that leaders possess. It’s a gut feel, it’s a timing issue, where’s the team is at (Winning/Losing) , or maybe the team needs a spark. As long as Rook knows the system, then start the on the job the training! Troy Aikman is a good example of a tough rookie QB debut season but fought through to winMay 5, 2023 at 2:52 pm #144046znModeratorI wonder if he had to get Greg Robinson's permission… https://t.co/CBdQ1AZz43

May 13, 2023 at 10:28 pm #144153Billy_TParticipantIn my view, if Stafford has solid protection, and he’s healthy, he’s a top three QB. I think O-line protection is more important for him than most. Give him that protection, and I take him over Rodgers. I take him over Hurts, and 99% of the QBs in the league.
Problem is, the Rams have not kept up with the rest of the league when it comes to their O-line. They haven’t invested in elite talent in a long, long time . . . until Avila. But one guard or center does not make a line. They need an elite LT at the very least, and that does not exist on the roster.
In the absence of an elite offensive line, you need a QB who can run, scramble, extend plays on his own. That’s not Stafford’s MO.

I dunno man. I don’t think you need an elite OL to win, just a solid one. The 2 LOTs in the last super bowl were Jordan Mailata (7th round pick) and Orlando Brown (3rd round). Both solid, neither elite.
Solid OLs do well in the league if other things are in place.
What the Rams are aiming for in their 2023 OL is to have one like the Saints glory days OLs with Brees, when they had fantastic (and big) guards who gave the qb space to step up. I think that’s what’s behind the Avila pick.

May 15, 2023 at 1:50 am #144158znModeratorMcVay loves what he’s seen from Stafford thus far, saying he looks like “a human JUGS machine out there.”
“He’s been awesome,” McVay said on NFL Network. “He’s got a great look in his eye. And even though he says he’s getting older, he still does look like a human JUGS machine out there. It’s like he was made to throw a football. When he’s feeling good, I feel a lot better as well. He just elevates people around him.”
