September 19, 2021 at 6:08 pm #132297joemadParticipantRoad win in a dome and different time zone. I’ll take it.
Jim Kelly’s back up is a good coach, that’s a good team. Might’ve been different if Wentz wasn’t injured
Bring on Tampa and those great receivers…
BTW, what exactly happened with that stupid punt snap error that resulted in a Colts TD?

Hard to tell if that was on the snapper, or on Scott (who is the guy it hit). The announcers think it was the snap but no details yet.

This one view:
Rams Junkie
Scott slid to the left but did not clear the pathway for the long snapper. The snap hit Scott and rolled back to Hekker in the endzone. The Colts defense pounced on it giving the colts the lead. It was at point when the Rams offense was struggling with three and outs in the 4th quarter. Here is the video link if you want to see what happened.Just how we drew it up.

September 19, 2021 at 7:08 pm #132304HramParticipantNo single position group played…..great.
But we did play well enough across-the-board, including some Key plays, to win on the road.
I’ll Take the win and be happy. 🙂
September 19, 2021 at 7:50 pm #132309AgamemnonParticipantSeptember 19, 2021 at 8:29 pm #132311InvaderRamModeratorsome boneheaded errors. missed tackles.
i give them these 2 games because the main guys sat out all preseason. but preseason is officially over. tampa bay is next. so they gotta clean that stuff up.
kupp. could this be his breakout season? plays like a 10 year veteran. keep forgetting he’s only played 4 seasons. and one of them he missed half the season. it’s time he get some recognition.

Morris has the talent for this defense to be elite. But it never will be by the conservative scheme he’s employing. It’s not the players. Staley had less talent and did more than Morris is doing. Drop, read first then react is a losing way to play. The players are too fast these days to do that. Staley played his zone as a combo zone/man. Zone only dictated who you would cover. Once a receiver entered the zone he was played in man coverage. Obviously, that is a simplification but it’s an illustration of how it’s different from Morris’ version. In Morris’ zone, they simply make their drops and wait to see where the pass is thrown then react. That concedes the reception. unless the DB is right on top of the receiver when the pass is thrown. That is the ancient way of playing zone.
Morris showed he can be more aggressive when he forced the Colt’s first punt. He locked them down immediately by playing more guys in the box, taking away their run game. When they were behind the chains he then backed off and played pass. I have no problem with that at all. Had he done that the entire game IMO the score wouldn’t have even been close. He would wait until they were on the Ram’s side of the field before he began to tighten things down. At that point he’s trying to limit them to FGs. That’s a loser mentality.
September 19, 2021 at 11:41 pm #132324canadaramParticipantI’m going to enjoy this win for awhile before I start worrying about the gazillion points that I think Tom Brady is going to hang on this defense next week.
I love Cooper Kupp. Hope he can stay healthy.

I disagree that Morris has better talent.losing JJ3 Troy Hill Morgan Fox Ebukam and Brockers all with years of experience playing together has to effect continuity and where was this talent gain coming from?
September 20, 2021 at 1:24 pm #132344ZooeyModeratorTough game. I prefer easier games, but the Win in the column works just as well as a pretty victory, and in December, I won’t remember that it was kinda ugly.
Wentz is not dead. That guy can play football well.
Cooper Kupp is amazing, and I want that guy signed up for the rest of his career.
Great goal line defense. It took the Colts 11 tries from inside the 5 to finally score a TD.
I agree that the secondary work does not look as good. They have the guys to go man coverage, and I don’t know why you wouldn’t do that if you could. Zone (seems to me) is how you go if you’re doing the best you can with a so-so secondary.
Sony Michel looked okay, and I just think he’s going to end up with most of the carries this year.
Cooper Kupp is good.
Morris should watch last year’s tape on the Rams/Bucs, and take notes on whatever Staley did because that was the worst I have ever seen Brady play.

Game 2 … Colts ..
This was a testy game to watch. There were good thrilling moments but there were also a lot of “what did I just see with my eyes?” moments. I’m glad we got the win and I believe we were the better team, but I don’t know how we can be happy about the win.
The Great
1) The first goal to go stop.
2) Kupp. Likely his pro bowl year. Does he lead the NFL in yards right now?
3) The interception of a shovel pass on the goal line … Donald had the blow up but Reeder was reading minds …
The Good
4) Sony Michel. That’s what I’ve expected.
5) The pass rush. I’ll highlight their lack of finish later, but we got to Wentz like ten times.
6) SJD’s move on his sack looks like he could have some different totals this year.
7) Ramsey’s pick to seal it.
8) Me having no doubt that Matt Gay was gonna nail his field foals.
The Bad
9) There were notable busts in protection.
10) Um … guys … catch the football.
11) Matt’s thumb causing low throws?
12) How do you let Pittman have a career day? They don’t have Hilton so you should be all over him.
13) Jack Doyle getting free multiple times?
14) Time of possession, long drives by the other team?
15) Dude, how many sacks did we miss? 10?
16) Wentz not finishing the game. This isn’t gymnastics. He’s not doing flips. The worst case scenario isn’t paralysis, it’s pain. Even if you have a crappy drive and lose you show your team that you will go out there regardless. You don’t have to win, you just have to be in pain for 3 plays and your boys will trust you forever. QB is unlike any other position. Matt Stafford was in practice the next day for no other reason that to show the boys that he was going to BE THERE. Obviously this bothered me.
17) The pick was not cool.
18) We should have put them away in the 3rd quarter.
The Ugly
19) On McVay. Everyone on this board, everyone that has scouted D Henderson … knows he is a complimentary back. He was getting up slow in the 2nd quarter. By the 3rd quarter he was obviously gassed. We were yelling at the television. How does an entire staff miss that? He can’t play every down. Memphis is a time share school. He hasn’t played every down since high school. Now we have two healthy backs. This was avoidable.
20) Hekker. Dude we kept you.
September 20, 2021 at 8:09 pm #132362InvaderRamModerator2) Kupp. Likely his pro bowl year. Does he lead the NFL in yards right now?
he’s actually third. the two ahead of him are samuel of sf (eek!) and lockett of sea (oh no!). nfc west is tough.
9) There were notable busts in protection.
10) Um … guys … catch the football.
hopefully, it’s just a matter of knocking off the rust.

yeah. sony and darrell should have been sharing carries from the get. i understand maybe game 1. but not game 2. and same goes for michel with darrell out. jones and/or funk should be seeing some carries next week.
September 21, 2021 at 9:15 pm #132387wvParticipantI’m watching the Replay, and Kupp is looking like prime-kupp,
but the issue has never been his talent — its his durability.
(Imho)The way he plays, is almost reckless. I just dont
expect him to be at full-speed by the end of the year,
if he can play at all. When he’s uninjured and fresh he’s
great, obviously.w
vSeptember 22, 2021 at 7:58 am #132398wvParticipantMain takeaway is: This defense just looks so different.
Its not a terrible defense, but last year it was so aggressive,
and fearsome. This one just looks tamer, softer.
I dunno if they have to protect some weak link or if they
dont have the talent anymore, or if the DC is just stupid.Second takeaway: So this is what a great, veteran, QB looks like.
Awesome. What a fucking powerhouse Stafford is. That drive to take the lead?
Are you kidding me. Boom, boom, boom, TD.w

My take on Rams / Colts from attending the game
I sat directly behind the Rams bench in section 114 row 3. I could even hear the players and coaches talking to each other….This is my observations about everything I witnessed:
First of all, Matthew Stafford is already the leader of the team. Players talk to him for information and they listen and follow his lead. Stafford has a cannon and I’m positive he will easily throw for over 5,000 yards and atleast 40 TD’s. Stafford and McVay have serious chemistry as a coach and QB. Immediately after that failed 3rd down and 2 Jet Sweep with Cooper Kupp failed, McVay went up to Stafford and Immediately to him “My bad” on that play call. Stafford audibled on about 7 or 8 plays during the game and every audible was the right call as they all had positive yards. Trust me on this, McVay and Stafford are going to be lights out this year.
Brian Allen is a freakin stud, dude must have put on 20+ pounds and he’s putting the hammer down on defensive tackles. Allen may be the Rams center for the next 6 or 7 years!! Whitworth may be in his 40’s but he’s playing at a very high level. He looked great yesterday and he straight sprints out from the locker room to the Rams sideline. Wouldn’t surprise me if Whitworth is back again next year. He got beat on that one play as his right foot got tangled with the left guard. Online looks great overall.
The WR group is potent and no one is going to be able to contain Cooper Kupp. I think Kupp is faster than he was before he tore his ACL. Tutu Atwell is even smaller than I thought he was. They are going to have to protect him because he is as frail as I’ve even seen any football player at any level. DeSean Jackson was very frustrated yesterday on the sidelines for not being used and playing. I watched him take his shoulder pads straps off around the first part of the 4th quarter as if he knew he wasn’t going to play anymore. Jackson also cursed a fan the fu_k out behind the bench that was haggling him. (His exact words to that fan while shooting him a bird was “Fu_k You Bitc_h”).
The running back trio was as follows, Henderson ran hard and caught a few passes but when Henderson got hurt and Sony Michel took over, it was like apples and oranges. Sony Michel is very smooth and shifty like Cam Akers and he gets positive yards on every carry. He’s alot bigger than I thought he was and I’m shocked the Patriots let him go. If he plays full time in this offense, he would have a 1,200 yard season. Jake Funk is a stud and is no joke on special teams.
On defense the d-line had very good success the way they rotated Players in. Greg Gaines was stuffing the middle and with A’Shawn Robinson in there, there is no more double teaming Aaron Donald. That’s the main reason Donald had 9 tackles yesterday. Aaron Donald was simply abusing Quenton Nelson yesterday one on one, it wasn’t even fair on most snaps.
Our linebackers in my opinion are too small. They are just too light in the ass to take on offensive lineman if they get to the second level and get hands on them. SĂ©bastien Joseph Day is becoming a force to be reckoned with and playing next to Donald is becoming like pick your poison. Leonard Floyd did not impress me yesterday with the salary he received. He needs to put on some weight, he’s too lean to me to take on that right tackle.
The secondary is a bit concerning to me. I’m not sure if it’s just the scheme from Raheem Morris or the players. They are playing too much zone and they are giving way too much cushion to receivers. With our defensive line, Rams CB’s need to close that cushion gap and play some bump and run coverage more often. If they play that lose zone defense come Sunday against Brady, he’s going to touch our secondary. Taylor Rapp may have had 9 tackles yesterday but Taylor Rapp was getting his ass torched yesterday. He’s much slower than I even thought he was and I feel he’s a liability that may end up really hurt us.
Overall the team never panicked yesterday after that botched punt that resulted in a touchdown for the Colts. I watched Stafford calmly get up and said let’s go score a TD, and they did. McVay did not air the ball out yesterday at all and that was a mistake because by 3rd quarter the Colts was slowly moving those safeties closer to the box. The Buccaneers secondary is not that good as even Matt Ryan showed yesterday that you can pass deep on them. I hope McVay has an attacking game plan Sunday and use more no huddle. The Falcons did well in the first half using no huddle and in the second have they abandoned no huddle and that pretty much did them in.
Just wanted to share some insights from my observation yesterday to the forum.
