We might need to talk about this Rams O-line depth.

Really hard to draw any conclusions about Jones and Funk tonight.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Per team spokesperson, Rams rookie WR Ben Skowronek fractured his forearm and will undergo surgery Monday. Big 20-yard punt return by Tutu Atwell negated by a holding call. But the speed Atwell showed. Wow.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
(1)If you weren’t aware Justin Lawler was still on the team, you are now. 5 tackles & a couple pressures. Rams could really use him as a 4th EDGE.
    (2) Joe D. has rejuvenated special teams. Return design makes it feel like Week 1.
    (3) TE Jacob Harris is a stud. Can he make D honor run when he’s in?
    (4) Feel everything Rams loved about Ernest Jones in the middle. He came to climb the depth chart at ILB tonight.
    (5) Can read into some intended roles for the RBs? Xavier Jones a run & receiving threat behind DH27. Jake Funk earning 3rd down trust as a rookie?
    (6) Tutu in space as a punt returner and receiver a great indicator. Add in a jet sweep and you can see it.

    ramaniac@RamaniacG
Staffordโ€™s going to keep those passes to Harris in bounds.

    Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
Ernest Jones is ready to play and start right now if he had to. Have to imagine theyโ€™ll get creative and will figure out ways to get him on the field in some capacity.

    Richard Ramsey@Richard95549251
Its still early but what we have seen from the offense has justified all the buzz: Tutu is a blazer, Jacob Harris is a special player, Funk has grit, B. Perkins has skills. So far, a lot to be excited about

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Bobby Evans is still in there with the third-team O-line, which tells me it was probably his struggles, not Corbett’s, that led to the change at center

    Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
Trishton Jackson should have a very realistic chance to make the 53-man roster.

First impressions, way more good things than bad things. Where the hell is Brycen Hopkins.

Hopkins may not have it. Or he just may need more development.

    Lawler looked good.

    Jones looked good.

Harris has a lot of potential.

RBs looked okay IMO given the limited space they had to run in.

2nd and 3rd string Olines were inadequate.

    Offensive Line Depth

The offensive line seemed to be dominated by the Chargers defensive front for most of the night, especially in the running game. An important note in this is that backup left tackle Joseph Noteboom was on the sidelines with the starters and other key players. Another exception is that second-year right tackle Tremayne Anchrum seemed to play well, so really the concern lies on the interior of the OL.

    Justin Lawler, EDGE

A former 2018 seventh-round draft choice from SMU, Justin Lawler was the star of the evening and may have solidified his place on the Rams final 53-man roster. Lawler appeared in every game during his rookie season, though his role was mostly limited to special teams. Unfortunately, injuries kept him off the field during 2019 and 2020. Itโ€™s encouraging to see Lawler persevere and overcome injuries to become a preseason standout.

On just the first series of the game Lawler recorded multiple pressures and a hit on Chargers veteran quarterback Chase Daniel, one of these pressures forcing an incompletion on the goal line and a field goal attempt. On the second series the outside linebacker made a tackle for loss in the run game. All in all, it was an impressive night from the fourth year player who now projects to be the primary backup to EDGE Leonard Floyd.

harris looked good (outside of that fumble). i mean. this was only against backup players. but. shoot. a good start. and he’s got hands! and he’s athletic!

i also liked seeing brown and hoecht in there starting on the defensive line. i hope they can both make some kind of contribution. i don’t really know how to evaluate their play. hoping people post stuff on them though.

i’m worried about the oline. i think the late switch in positions is more about how bad evans has been than how good allen has been. but maybe allen will be that good? who knows?

Rams mostly 3rd and 4th stringers really didnโ€™t give the fans much to cheer about last night, but man, gotta tell ya, when they did make some big plays, that stadium got LOUD. Like deafeningly loud. When packed, SOFI is gonna he one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, no doubt.

Charger classic unis looked great, I wish the Rams would revert back to their classics.

    Goff went 7-9 in Det.

Delvin Hodges came close to looking like Wolford….

The Rams don’t know what the hell they’re doing….

Game 1 PS analysis of backups …

I expected a kinda flat game based on the initial reports I read … I was happily surprised.

Not going to do my normal good bad and ugly … gonna go player by player …

    1) Jacob Harris … He’s going to see the field this year. Period. He may have 11 receptions and 11 TDs. He needs some ball security work obviously but that may have been jitters. I don’t know that the TE delineation is even something that needs be made.
NOte: I thought his ?slant? or in cut route with the precision of his feet looked uncoverable. Gonna go through his body? Beat him to a spot? Neither.

    2) Lawler … whoa dude. Where did that come from? He was big and explosive.

    3) Jonah Williams and Hoecht … it’s going to be tough to cut either of them. I thought Williams had the better day, but not by much.

    4) JR Reed was playing like I expect him to. That 3rd down stop was what I expect of his reads and reactions.

    5) Tutu … I like he and Calais returning kicks … I prefer Calais on KOffs

    6) The bottom of the WR room is really impressive. Heydel’s one handed catch, Koski and Trishton Jackson … Akers deep speed?

    7) Not Keeping Hopkins. Maybe if there weren’t 9 WRs worth keeping. I don’t know what his ish is, but I don’t want it getting on me or my nice new toys.

    8) I saw Garrett having multiple pressures and even getting some bull rush action to work.

    9) Eyeballing Alaric Jackson and Anchrum at the OT positions … I saw Jackson miss one guy but beyond that I thought they held up well in pass pro and okay in run push. I expected more issues…

    10) The interior line I was not as happy with.

    11) Wanted to see more of Warner, but they may be hiding him.

    12) Our DB depth and quality is nice to see. Cuts are gonna be difficult all across the board.

    13) Funk for Goalline … the 4th and 1 where he made a cut in the hole and ground out 3 extra yards? I’m a fan.

    14) I believe we pick up another RB, not necessarily because we really need it, but because a lot of quality players are getting cut, lots of crowded 5-6 deep RB rooms.

    15) I like Jones’ command.

    16) Perkins gets the 3rd string job.
