Brandon Staley on Jalen Ramsey, from https://theathletic.com/2700823/2021/07/12/brandon-staley-qa-chargers-coach-on-developing-player-relationships-justin-herbert-otas-install-and-more/

I use that word — “express themselves” — because I mean it. It’s a partnership. That’s why I love the NFL. You have to make sure that that guy has a big voice in how you do things, because he can help you. He can see a lot of things that are happening out there that can really help you. You can say, “Hey, we can do this one of two ways.” And then he makes the way that he wants work. We’re always going to be wired that way. “We’ve got two really good solutions. What are you more comfortable with?”

I just think that’s the best way to do business. And then you’re always current during the week, and then when you get to the signal caller meetings that he and I had all the time, they were like quarterback meetings where he’s ranking the third downs. “Hey, these are the coverages I like the best. This is where I want to be in the red area.” So he’s fully aware of why we’re doing everything and there’s no surprises for him on game day. I think that collaboration is ultimately why we had the year that we had. He had a huge impact on me.

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2021/07/12/rams-49ers-jimmie-ward-sean-mcvay-target-games/?taid=60ed48048b2ab800018b392c&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter

Sean McVay has proved to be one of the smartest and most innovative offensive coaches in the league, completely turning around a Rams team that hadn’t finished top 10 in scoring since 2006 before he arrived in 2017. While he’s not a perfect play caller, his track record as a play designer is quite impressive.

49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward just has one question: Why does McVay always target him in coverage?

He believes McVay will continue to call plays to test him in coverage, which he’s fine with because that could lead to a raise.

“I know (McVay) is going to try to at me this year,” Ward said. “I’ve been talking a lot of (expletive). I’m pretty sure it’s going to get to him, so we’ll see. I’ll get more balls thrown to me, so I’ll get more action, and if I can back up what I’m talking about now and this whole offseason, hopefully I’ll get paid more money.”

I have always thought this is the best approach, with star/talented players.
It requires some wisdom from the coach to pull it off, though.

If Paulo Freire was a football coach, this is the approach he would use.

I think that will happen with Stafford and McVay.
