So the rest of the NFC West isn’t going to just hand the Rams the title?

    That’s disappointing.

San Francisco 49ers swing blockbuster trade with Miami Dolphins for No. 3 overall pick (report)

    https://www.masslive.com/patriots/2021/03/san-francisco-49ers-swing-blockbuster-trade-with-miami-dolphins-for-no-3-overall-pick-report.html

A massive domino has finally fallen on the quarterback trade market.

The 49ers have acquired the No. 3 overall pick from the Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. San Francisco is sending three first-round picks and a third-rounder to jump up from No. 12 overall.

From a Patriots perspective, this means Jimmy Garoppolo should finally become available in trade discussions. If the 49ers are giving up three first-rounders to make a leap like this, they’re almost certainly going to take a franchise quarterback. With no guaranteed money left on his contract, the 49ers can move on from Garoppolo relatively easily.

Bill Belichick is reportedly still interested in his own quarterback, too.

Except for their QB won’t be able to read defenses for the first five seasons.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future likely won’t be in San Francisco

    * https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/03/26/jimmy-garoppolos-future-likely-wont-be-in-san-francisco/

With the 49ers making a bold move up the 2021 draft board from No. 12 to No. 3, all signs point to coach Kyle Shanahan coveting one of the top quarterbacks — and being comfortable having two of them go before he picks.

If, as it appears, the 49ers gave up the 12th overall pick, two future first-round picks, and third-round pick for a quarterback, it means that Jimmy Garoppolo and his $25 million compensation package for 2021 will be gone.

Barring a steep pay cut and an understanding that he’s simply keeping the seat warm for the rookie, Garoppolo will be traded or released. Barring a steep pay cut to facilitate a trade, Garoppolo will be released.

We posed the question of whether Garoppolo eventually will be cut last month. We also explained that G.M. John Lynch said what he had to say when he said he has “no doubt” that Garoppolo will be the starter.

Look for the 49ers to try (unsuccessfully) to sell the idea that Garoppolo will remain in place, in order to build some trade leverage. Unless they can find a trade partner or get Jimmy to take less, Jimmy likely will be gone.

And then he’ll be free to sign with any other team. Like maybe the Patriots.

I like the sound of that.

The 49ers could get nothing for Garoppolo, and then draft Johnny Manziel. Terrific. Love it.

That, my friends, is what I call a Plan.

Maybe Shanahan ain’t such a genius

They spent more than the Rams did to get the third choice at an unproven player.

    Inconceivable

Replacing Garropolo with a qb on the rookie scale frees up massive cap space for the 9ers next year. I’d be shocked if the 9ers ditch Jimmy G for the 2021 season.

With the money the Niners save by moving on from Jimmy G, they’ll be able to pick up a high demand FA or a couple key guys.

The Rams, I think, are already over next year’s cap, btw.

A real-time look at the 2022 salary cap totals for each NFL team, including estimated cap space. Assumes a $192,500,000 team salary cap.

I just feel the Cap is going to be much higher.

    Good point.

Course it only works if they hit on the right QB.

    Very interesting division.

One thing that seems lost in all this but was reaffirmed today: The #49ers decision to make this trade isn’t so much about not believing in Garoppolo’s ability as it is his inability to stay healthy. Performance is part of the equation but not as big as the durability issue.

That’s especially true when combined with cost. They’re fine with Garoppolo’s price when he’s on the field and healthy. Not so when he’s not.

Your most expensive players need to be your best and/or most productive players, especially on good teams where middle class dwindles.
