This is a good vid, but, to cut to the chase, they get to the Rams at about 6:12 in.

While I understand the need or desire to promote competition within the locker room, it is rare for the head coach to include the quarterback position in the conversation, particularly when it is a veteran with a strong résumé that includes a Super Bowl appearance. Keep in mind, this is the same signal-caller the Rams signed to a four-year, $134 million extension with a then-record $110 million in guarantees back in September of 2019. McVay almost certainly had to sign off on that deal, as the architect and primary play-designer of an offense that once took the league by storm under Goff’s direction. This is also the same head coach who helped the fifth-year pro shake the “bust” label affixed to his name after a rocky rookie season and elevated the young quarterback into a two-time Pro Bowler.
Given his personal investment in Goff’s development, I would expect McVay to exhibit more patience and consideration with his starting quarterback. Sure, he can express his disappointment in his QB1’s play based on the turnovers (17) and inconsistency throughout a campaign in which Goff passed for 3,962 yards with 20 touchdowns and a 90.0 passer rating. But McVay should also acknowledge his role in the offense’s sputtering, with defensive coordinators catching up with his scheme and the Rams’ B-level pass catchers and offensive line unable to consistently win against top defenses.
I’m surprised McVay has decided to play the silent blame game and seemingly pin all of the offensive woes on his quarterback. Honestly, the Rams coach should take a long, hard look in the mirror to determine whether the person with the joystick also deserves some criticism. Goff possesses a whopping dead-cap hit of $65.5 million if he’s jettisoned this coming offseason, so the Rams need to find a way to get their head coach and quarterback on the same page.
Earlier this week, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche reported McVay and Goff have some serious work to do this offseason.
“The people I’ve spoken to said basically, at this moment, the relationship with Goff and McVay: not great,” Wyche said on NFL Network. “They need marriage counseling, is what one person said to me. I think this is something that they’re going to be able to work through, but there’s got to be some healing and that’s not just with Jared Goff’s injured thumb.”
The Rams must figure this out because divorce isn’t a viable option at this time.

i only have issue with this. mcvay does not seem like the type of person to deflect blame. i mean his history is accepting responsibility. maybe it was just lip service? maybe.
they got shit to sort out. i hope they sort it out.

a mini transcript of “Between the Horns” on the QB:
Farr: It was entirely appropriate (McVay calling out Goff). The ups and downs. Any other position would be put up for competition. Got to be honest. Can’t put your support behind a guy who’s been up and down. I hope he works hard. Not just to keep his job but to get back to the Superbowl.
MJD: The turnovers were a very big problem. Not understanding your reads in protection. Too many guys running free. Interceptions were concerning. Explosiveness will come once you get your speed guys out there. I’ll say this, “you have to match your pay or it can ruin a locker room. To their credit they kept that locker room together. He’s got to perform better if they want to keep it together next year. It’s important for him to go into this off season and be the better version of himself next year.”
Farr: I would take the guy we saw in Green Bay! You win 10 games with him.
MJD: And that was a guy with 9 fingers! When you get singled out the way Goff was you have to respond. I’m curious to see how he does.

Yes, it is just lip service. McVay talking about his shortcomings (i.e. not running the ball) is about the same as Martz saying “Shoot! We’ll fix that.”
After 4 years of McVay, I’d say McVay WILL always have the weakness of ignoring, at times, talented guys in the backfield. This goes back to 2017 when McVay had Goff throw the ball twice as much as he had Gurley run the ball.
And, yes, he will acknowledge ignoring his talented backs. I’m not sure how much he has talked about going away from the run this year, but I thought it was a problem in the losses to San Fran, Miami, NY Jets, and of course Green Bay. But sooner or later, McVay will return to his pass-heavy approach.
This is who he is! He is stubborn at times with his approach, and it’s becoming a pattern that talented defensive coordinators with some talent can get the best of a McVay offense.
I love what McVay has brought to the Rams, but what if he is more like Mike Martz than Andy Reid?
January 23, 2021 at 8:49 pm #127146InvaderRamModeratorBut sooner or later, McVay will return to his pass-heavy approach.
the rams ranked 25th in passing play percentage though. and outside of 2019, the rams have consistently been a balanced offense.
i do think there is room for improvement. there has to be. he’s only 35 years old.
all i’m saying is i don’t completely dismiss mcvay’s criticism of goff. at the same time, i don’t think he is without blame himself. they gotta sort it out. the alternative could be much more worse for both of them as well as the entire organization.

This is partly why McVay is so frustrating at times. The offense is at its best when there IS a run / pass balance. And yet, McVay just abandons a balanced offense at times.
A lot of times, this happens in key situations against defenses who create problems for the Rams. (In the original post, I meant to say McVay passed twice as much as he ran AGAINST the Vikings & Mike Zimmer in 2017).
And I’m not sure McVay will change. I thought Goff would change and continue growing this year and get better and better. But he’s just an above average qb. He will never be a Peyton Manning type qb.
Sure, I’d like to see the Rams offense led by a HOF-type qb, but those are hard to find.
Being frustrated that we don’t have Mahomes or Rodgers leading our offense seems foolish to me.
McVay’s recent comments about Goff make me more concerned about McVay than Goff.

i would agree with that. but we don’t know what mcvay is frustrated by. we’re all just guessing really at this point.
i think losing mcvay would be disastrous for the rams. i really do. to a certain extent i believe that about goff as well. as you said, finding a qb of his caliber is hard.
but mcvay has a chance to be special. i see nothing remotely close to martz in mcvay. i really don’t.
January 24, 2021 at 11:32 am #127164znModeratori would agree with that. but we don’t know what mcvay is frustrated by
Or IF he should be frustrated. Maybe he should just be a hard-working, head-down, steady coach. He’s never had to be patient as a head coach, he arrived and took over a talent-stocked team. He never had to build or rebuild. My dark side is wondering how much McVay has to mature and get over some entitlement.

and he usually is. i’m not too worried at this point. for one comment.
and he definitely inherited a lot of talent. for sure. but he did not inherit a good team.
January 24, 2021 at 2:06 pm #127173HramParticipantMcVay strikes me as the kind of person that if you jettison him, he comes back stronger with his next team a few years down the road.
Or the organization can be patient with him while he matures.
Goffs contract is going to look a lot better in a couple/three years when the cap goes up.

i agree with all of that. i just don’t like this pitting goff and mcvay against each other.
i have faith they’ll sort this out. until i see more that is.

POSTSEASON QBS
interestingly, after setting an nfl record in offensive scoring in 2020, offenses have averaged just 21.4 offensive points per game so far this postseason, down from a 23.3 postseason average last season.

You can drop me in that column, as well.
And I will add that the Rams had a lot of coaches leave, some for positions that did not look markedly superior, and I wonder if that’s strictly “career moves.”
January 27, 2021 at 3:01 pm #127249znModeratorFrom NFL Now: #Rams QB Jared Goff has done so many good things in LA – 45 wins since 2017! – while John Wolford impressed during his short window. Expect an open QB competition in camp to help it shake out, I'm told. pic.twitter.com/mPSEuaDiF1

January 27, 2021 at 3:07 pm #127250joemadParticipantyeah, McVay has been a dick recently, i kinda suspected that ever since their special teams coach left for Dallas last year…not sure if stemmed from the failed fake punt deep in their territory vs Seattle last year where McVay chewed out Fassel on the sidelines when it happened.
But Cowherd makes sense too ….big fat contract from player friendly contract to the unassuming QB.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the new GM connection in Detroit will take Goff for Stafford……..I’m not a big fan of Matthew Stafford…..that guy throws a lot of picks.
I hope they work it out and Goff stays…. I like Goff a lot.

OTOH, it seems to me that if McVay is a dick, we would have heard about it before. But he came in with universal acclaim as a well-liked guy, so it just doesn’t seem to line up. He could have changed, of course, once he became The Man and then suffered some losing, but…it seems to me that this would come out. Unnamed sources would say.
It may be that they are trying to light a fire under Goff, but that could be done privately. Saying it out loud is crass, and serves no useful purpose.

We have.
There’s been all sorts of signs of that.

D’Marco Farr was on 101.1 in St. Louis this morning.
He’s pretty much convinced Snead and McVay are just trying to motivate Goff.

That being said…. intensity can wear you down… I wonder if that’s a thing. I would never characterize him as a dick though.

January 27, 2021 at 8:54 pm #127257TSRFParticipantI heard a CBS Sports Minute with Jim Rome on WFAN sports radio this afternoon. He implied that where there is smoke, there is fire with the Rams / Goff talk, and that we should be prepared for Goff being elsewhere next season. Just his take, but he is sort of an insider, I guess.
January 27, 2021 at 9:02 pm #127258ZooeyModeratorI can’t imagine the Rams have decided they are definitely moving on from Goff.
That would be the most stunning news ever out of Rams world.
I would not be surprised to learn that they picked up the phone and talked to GB, and DET, and HOU, and maybe even somebody like the NYJ, but I have a hard time believing that they have decided that they cannot go forward with Goff.
I mean…Goff threw a lot of balls into the flat. But I have to believe that was what the play called for. I just have a very hard time believing that Goff did the dink and dunk when he wasn’t asked to do that. The man can throw the ball deep. I just. I just can’t see that. Even with the worst possible framing, Goff did not have a bad year. He is absolutely NOT the reason they won only one playoff game. Jesus. How many QBs played Zero playoff games?
Goff may not WIN games by creating explosive plays. But he doesn’t LOSE games, either.
January 27, 2021 at 9:09 pm #127259znModeratorJanuary 27, 2021 at 9:26 pm #127260canadaramParticipantRegarding the open competition talk. For the sake of discussion, let’s assume that it is 100% true and the starting job is up for grabs. Now let’s say that Wolford wins the job. I can’t imagine a scenario where the Rams have a backup QB who counts $34 million against the cap. That doesn’t seem like a good use of cap resources. Similarly, I can’t imagine Goff wanting to stick around as a full time backup. So in the unlikely event that Goff lost the competition I would imagine that he would be gone. Anyway, as I’ve said before I’m no cap expert, quite the opposite really, but this whole idea of there being a competition for the starting QB doesn’t strike me as being genuine. On the other hand, why would the McVay et al take such a big gamble and even start down this path? Bah, I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. This just seems like a big mess to me.
January 27, 2021 at 9:35 pm #127261joemadParticipant“If I’m RAM’S GM Les Snead and my 2 biggest deals are Todd Gurley, who is no longer with the team, and $100M guaranteed to Goff, I might be considered to be GM of the RAMS AT THIS MOMENT”
start at :34 second mark.
