Seems to me, Adolph Reed is just pointing to the idea that there’s two layers of ‘reform’ we can ‘see’ (not see, if we have ideological blinders).

One layer has to do with all the changes in actual police polices, regulations, and discipline reforms that liberals want to see.

The deeper layer though, has to do with Class.

To be honest I am surprised that my friends in this thread don’t see the good news part, which is that we have had sustained, huge, widespread protests against police brutality for the first time…well since I can even remember. That means, among other things, that a majority believe the Floyd killing points to systemic racism. 4 years ago the majority did NOT believe things like that.

This is a huge part of what’s happening. Chomsky for example on the protests: “The popular reaction to the gruesome Floyd murder has been astonishing in its national scope, fervent commitment and interracial solidarity,” observed the philosopher and social critic Noam Chomsky. I posted the source here: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/after-15-stunning-days-of-anti-racist-protests-what-happens-next/

Why am I the only one in the thread noting this aspect of it?

Now the problem is, while you can have a real alliance against issues revolving around race,it’s not the same for issues of class. Chomksky once said that Vietnam got heavily protested because the elite themselves were divided. It’s the exact same thing now, with the issue of systemic racism as exposed by the Floyd murder. We will NOT get the same broad alliance on issues of class. For obvious reasons.

And along with that, it also remains to be seen what actual changes will come about. (In the article I cited, Chomsky makes that point too.) That’s a big one. But still, for right now before we know where it leads, never in our lifetimes have a majority of the population agreed that an incident like the Floyd murder pointed to pervasive, deep systemic racism, and never before has there been a sustained protest like this against something like that.

And the fact that in many cases the police over-reacted (visibly, on camera) just helped the cause.

Jared Goff re: New Rams OC.

“Kevin O’Connell is awesome. I can already see he is going to be really good for us. Im excited to get on the field with him and get to work.”

    Andrew Siciliano@AndrewSiciliano
Jared Goff says more Rams teammates have recently joined his quarantine workouts. He says he’s been the “ringleader.”

“I’ve been throwing to the receivers for quite a while.”

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams QB Jared Goff and WR Robert Woods both said they’ve been able to do 7-on-7 work with some teammates while adhering to local public health guidelines.

Rookie RB Cam Akers and TE Brycen Hopkins were among the participants, and have impressed Goff.

“Van (Jefferson) couldn’t make it, but those two guys have been great. It’s been fun to watch them learn. They’re just both so smart and able to pick things up so fast.”

Rams RB Darrell Henderson said he would be full-go if the team could do on-field workouts right now and will be 100 percent ready for training camp. He had been spending the offseason at the team facility rehabbing a late-season ankle injury which required surgery.

Henderson has been among those participating in recent throwing/7-on-7 sessions with quarterback Jared Goff.

Has Kronky said a word? Has any ‘owner’?

Khan, the owner of the Jagz, has spoken up. It’s linked in this thread: Sports and the Protests http://theramshuddle.com/topic/sports-and-the-protests/

    Or here’s another link: https://www.jaguars.com/news/racism-in-all-its-forms-will-kill-it-kills-people-it-kills-communities-it-kills-

Near as I know Khan is the only owner to speak up. I wouldn’t expect Kroenke to. He’s a big Trump donor and this kind of issue is way over his head I would think.

    My 2 cents.

To be honest, the police violence does not surprise me. I mean it’s shocking and disturbing but it’s not a surprise. That’s not everywhere of course–as of right now more than 700 towns and cities have had protests and the vast majority are both peaceful in themselves and unmolested by police. But some of the imagery is so dark (and I’ve posted a lot of it here). Way over the top–like police deliberately shooting people in the face with tear gas canisters at short range.

What is my attitude about the whole thing, all combined?

I am heartened by the size, scope, and extent of the protests. 4 years ago I never thought protests led by a group called BlackLivesMatter would be this powerful, widespread, and deep. I am heartened by all the international protests. I am heartened by images of cities full of protesters to the tune of 10s of thousands of them.

I am also heartened by the way the message is being supported. A poll I posted says that 74% of the country believes the Floyd murder points to underlying systemic racism in the system. 74%?! I never expected that.

These images will remain in political consciousness for a long time. I’ve never seen anything like it. And I was at some anti-war protests when I was in high school. Now what the real changes will be…we’ll see.

It would be interesting to know more about the video, or videos. Why is the whole-entire incident not shown, from beginning to end? A

So far there are 2 vids. Neither covers the whole thing. One is an onlooker filming the act of killing Floyd. The other is a security cam showing the first portion of the arrest still on the sidewalk before they moved. There is no continuous vid of the entire episode.

    Cian Fahey
    https://www.otbsports.com/american-football/power-ranking-nfl-quarterbacks-2020-1027799

    12. Jared Goff

Stat Caveat: Jared Goff was the eighth-most accurate quarterback in the NFL last season.

The Los Angeles Rams offence changed dramatically last season. Goff became more of a focal point than a complement. He was asked to carry the offence and that led to a lot more mistakes. But he also showed off improved accuracy, ranking in the top 10 on both intermediate and deep throws, while working the pocket better than he had in previous seasons. Goff ranking 12th in the NFL is more a reflection on the NFL currently being in a position where old quarterbacks have declined and the younger quarterbacks are still developing, or have already failed to develop.

from FootballOutsiders: Rams QBs make lists of best/worst games of past decade

    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/quick-reads/2020/quick-reads-decade-review-qb-games

    Best Games:

    4. Jared Goff (RAMS vs MIN, 2018) 26/33, 466 yards, 5 TD/0 INT, 1 sack
Goff had one stretch over the second and third quarters where he picked up first downs on six straight throws, gaining 151 yards and two touchdowns in the process. Then he had first downs on seven straight throws over the third and fourth quarters, gaining 123 yards and a touchdown. Each of those 13 throws gained at least 11 yards.

    Worst Games:

    7. Nick Foles (RAMS @ GB, 2015) 11/29, 141 yards, 1 TD/4 INT, 3 sacks
Hoo boy. If opponent adjustments and league baselines hold steady, this will be one of the 25 worst games we’ve ever measured, and the worst since Teddy Bridgewater’s eight-sack day against Detroit in Week 6 last year. (It was not quite as bad as Bridgewater’s game, but it was the 26th-worst game on record.) The Rams seemed to know he was in for a bad day; they only asked him to pass four times on first down, and only once in the first half. Eventually though, they got to third down, and then Foles was screwed. All four of his interceptions came on third downs, and all with 7 to 9 yards to go for a conversion. And they weren’t on deep balls either — all four were thrown to receivers within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage. Two of them came in the red zone in the fourth quarter.

from PFF: Ranking the NFL’s 32 starting running backs by elusiveness
    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-ranking-32-starting-running-backs-elusiveness

    ROOKIES

    1. CAM AKERS, LOS ANGELES RAMS
Making people miss wasn’t an added bonus for Akers at Florida State. It was a necessity while running behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football. Comparing college numbers to the NFL is always tricky, but we’ve seen that missed tackle numbers and stats like yards after contact translate well to the NFL. Last season, Akers forced a missed tackle on 32% of his touches and averaged nearly 4 rushing yards after contact per attempt. He’ll likely have to put those skills to use again as a rookie behind a Rams’ offensive line that still has some questions.

Just an update – I’m OK, the police blustered and left, and I’ve got an attorney.

Thanks for everyone’s support. I’m a white guy, so please, let’s remember that most incidents of police harassment don’t get this kind of attention.

    City of Portland@CityPortland
Officers were there to serve him with a court summons for criminal mischief for damaged city property via graffiti. Milneil refused service. Case is being submitted to DA’s office, but @PolicePortland is hopeful he’ll contact them to accept service prior to DA review. #

Hmmmm. I honestly can’t think of one.
    Its all poor-people buying drugs.
    Poor-people selling drugs.
    Poor people taking drugs.
Poor people stealing to get money to buy drugs.

There are no good solutions, because the system either
    Sends the poor-people to jail/prison.
    Or,
The system sends poor-people back out into corporate-capitalism.

I’m not being facetious. I have no stories that have a happy-ending.

Oh, and Every reflective person in the system is burned out, btw.

    Thank you for responding.

So you never got a witness to confess on the stand that they were the real perpetrator and your client was innocent?

But that happens all the time on tv and in movies!

Maybe you just haven’t lucked into one of those situations yet.

Spoke to a few players today about essentially not having OTAs or minicamps… most just genuinely miss seeing their teammates and coaches. As much as the virtual meetings have been fun and different, they just want to be together.
