Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recently ranked the NFL’s best pass rusher from each gap and rather than Donald being placed at several different spots, he earned higher praise than anyone on the list.
His versatility warranted selection as the best pass rusher from everywhere, according to Farrar.
Before we get into specifics, we should mention that while Donald doesn’t top the list at any one position, it’s because he’s so great… well, everywhere. It’s yet another way in which, when we talk about defensive linemen, there is Aaron Donald, and there is everybody else. Last season, including the playoffs, Donald had 14 solo sacks and 78 total pressures. Only Tampa Bay’s Shaquil Barrett and Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt had more total pressures, and Donald tied with Watt for the NFL’s most solo sacks. Keep in mind that while Barrett and Watt were most often detached form the formation and rushing from the edge, Donald was more often than not getting his work done from the inside, and as a constant focus of the opposing offensive line.
Last season, Donald had six sacks and 31 pressures as a 3-tech tackle, two sacks and 18 pressures as a 4i tackle, two sacks and nine pressures as a 4-tech tackle, one sack and seven pressures as a five-tech end, three sacks and nine pressures as a 7-tech end, and two pressures as a 9-tech end. Basically, wherever you line Aaron Donald up, he’s going to demolish your quarterback.

From what I’ve been told, the price for Julio Jones in talks with at least one team was a first round pick, plus players. That’s steep and I have a hard time believing the #Falcons get that. And there’s also the reality that Julio may want a new deal, too..

One great sign for Howard is that he’s not even wearing a brace on his knee. He’s had a sleeve on it in OTAs, but a brace hasn’t been needed. And after calling himself fast, he said there are no lingering effects from the injury slowing him down.
“Nah, I’m not wearing a brace,” he said. “I’ve got a sleeve on, but that’s as much as I’ve got right now. But I feel real confident, real comfortable and I’m ready to go.”

Howard said he doesn’t know exactly what his role will be or who the Rams plan to start at linebacker, but he’s taking it a day at a time. If he impresses in camp and the preseason, don’t be surprised to see him starting alongside Kiser, Ernest Jones, Troy Reeder or Kenny Young.

More on this. Yeah to even be interested seems like a problem.
I don’t know about this idea that you’re more likely to win if you keep adding high-end elite talent. To me that’s not trusting the right things.
Since free agency I have rarely seen top winning teams that are like that. It was much more common before free agency—back when a team could draft a guy and he was basically a career long member of that team. For example having Greene, Ham, Lambert, Blount, Shell, Webster, Harris, Bradshaw, Swann and Stallworth on the same team for years. Or like the old Rams. The Rams had 26 consecutive years–1967 to 1990—with at least one offensive lineman in the pro bowl, and in that span, they had 4 OL in the pro bowl 3 times–68, 78, and 85. Look at the 85 line–it’s of course Pankey, Hill, Smith, Harrah, and Slater. Only Pankey was not in the pro bowl that year. In 85 all 5 of those guys were in the league 5 years or more, and in the case of Slater and Harrah, it was 9 and 10 years respectively. A line like that is unimaginable today. No team could afford it without sapping some other part of the roster.
So now, you can afford a handful of elite guys and you build around them with talent that is hopefully good. Even then there will be a high turnover every 4 years (or 5 with 1st rounders). There are only so many big contract guys you can maintain on a team. By big contract, although this is open to debate, right now I would say that’s anyone over 10 M for the 2nd tier of “big” and then the 20+ M guys for the 1st tier. It’s actually not that common for a team to have 3 or more 1st tier, 20+ M players.
Rams have 3 1st tier contracts (4 actually since they are paying for 2 20 M qbs) and beyond that, they have some 2nd tier high end contracts–right now that’s Whitworth, Woods, Floyd, and Kupp. In terms of contracts it’s a top heavy team.
I have defended that approach, saying it’s worth it to put a high percentage of that cap into a few guys and then keep adding good but younger guys around them.
But at a certain point, enough is enough.
Which gets me back to where I started. I don’t see teams thriving in multiple years by continually adding high-end contract talent. You have to have some, but beyond that it’s coaching and luck.
I am not sure how I feel about a coach who thinks they are always just one expensive trade away. Why isn’t it the case that you are just some inexpensive good coaching ideas away. It seems to me that the teams that win year in and out have THAT, not the “trade a year” mentality.
To be fair I didn’t say that when they got Ramsey or Stafford. But–enough is enough, and there is just no such thing anymore as a sustainable 70s Steelers roster in the NFL’s 21st century. And IMO it won’t work by doing it the “here’s our window” way either. I prefer long term strategies. I never think any player is THE difference. Back in 99 they added Faulk to a team that was just crazy talent rich but that talent did not come from big trades for superstars. That team started 6 UDFAs (Jenkins, Fletcher, Jones, Farr, Nutten, Warner). And of course without Vermeil and Martz, all that would have mattered less.
So that’s how I feel about Jones. It’s just this guy’s take.

No real quarterback coach or OC
Noll hired his former Browns teammate and 18-year QB Babe Parilli as quarterback coach for Bradshaw in 1972. After two years, Parilli either quit or was fired. That story is not clear.
The effect of Parelli’s leaving on Bradshaw was devastating. “Babe Parilli was my one and only quarterback coach,” Bradshaw told Steelers.com earlier this year. “I didn’t have an offensive coordinator or quarterback coach. One year I had Babe Pirelli [sic] and he did to me what they did to me in college. He picked me up and encouraged me. I flourished under his knowledge because he played so many years in the NFL and shared it. Babe Parilli is someone whose name is never mentioned.”
Chuck became the quarterbacks coach
As Zimmerman noted, “Two years later Parilli was gone, and Noll took over the job himself.”
That was not a very bright move for the future Super Bowl coach. First, Chuck knew nothing about offense. Second, he knew even less about coaching quarterbacks.
Noll played some offense as a guard with the Cleveland Browns, but he knew little about offense itself. His entire time as an assistant coach was on the defensive side of the ball. He was Don Shula’s defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Colts when the Steelers hired him in 1969.
Why did he do that? Why not hire a good offensive coordinator who was also a QB coach? It was devastating not just on Bradshaw but on the other quarterbacks, Terry Hanratty and Joe Gilliam, who had been drafted in 1974.
Bradshaw explained to Zimmerman what it was like having Noll as his QB coach and head coach, with things being so bad that he asked to be traded. “I don’t think he handled me properly, but he didn’t know me. I wanted to be handled very personally, like I’d been in college. He could have made it a lot easier. There were times he dressed me down in front of the team; once he fined me $25 for missing a pregame meal, and I was there three minutes late. I was outside talking to one of the Steeler scouts,” Bradshaw recalled.
“It was a rough road, a testing ground. But I think he felt I could handle it, that I was going to be the kind of championship quarterback he needed. He wasn’t going to baby-sit. I remember once going in and asking to be traded, and he said, `You’re going to be a great quarterback someday. It takes time.’ “

At a time when the list of teams potentially interested in Falcons receiver Julio Jones is growing, there’s one team that, per a source with knowledge of the dynamics, can be removed from the list.
The Rams.

Regardless, we’re told that it’s not. The Rams are out. That’s not a firm guarantee they won’t get back in. For now, they’re out.

Back and forth between misery and laughter.
It’s not enough that they threw away all of those picks to give away Goff to Detroit. It’s not enough that they used their first pick on a tiny receiver, for the deepest “room” on the team. A receiver who will surprise the hell out of me if he gets more than 10 touches a game.
I love his speed, and potential for big plays, and he looks fearless on film, even at 150 pounds. But a #2 is just waaay too early to draft a gadget guy, essentially, when the team is already four deep at the position. He basically duplicates Jackson’s skill set, and may end up being the fifth receiver, at least as long and Jackson is healthy.
So, now, they’re actually seriously considering adding ANOTHER receiver?
Julio Jones, when healthy, is a game-changing, all-world receiver, with freakish athleticism and strength. But he’s also 31, has been hurt a lot, and he won’t come cheap. The Rams don’t have the draft capital for this, but I’m afraid they’ll find another way to mortgage the future to bring him in. McVay is outdoing George Allen in the Future is Now department.
Hope I’m wrong, and even if they do make the deal, I’ll still love my team. But, sheesh!! They’re driving me to drinkin’ these days!
You know criticism of the Rams is not allowed.
Even if (as in this case) I agree with most of it.
Those are just the rules. I don’t make the rules.
So let me just put it this way. If they do indeed go after and acquire Julio Jones, while we must say it is a good thing, it nevertheless might not be the absolutely unqualified 100% best thing they could do.

The Rams agreed to acquire Matthew Stafford from the Lions back in January and now the club has finally seen him on the practice field.
Los Angeles is keeping things light for OTAs. But when Stafford has thrown passes, he’s made a strong impression on his new head coach.
“It looked good. I think we’re in the early phases of it, but certainly the way he’s handled things up to this point, been very pleased,” Sean McVay said this week. “He’s a joy to be around every single day, the consistency that he comes in to work with is definitely something that, he makes it really fun. And I know [I’ve] been pleased with what he’s done up to this point.”
Stafford seems to be enjoying McVay’s presence just as much, saying this week that he’s liked collaborating with the head coach on the playbook. If things go as intended for Los Angeles, Stafford could be in for one of the best seasons if his career in 2021.
