Rams really should have beat the Colts by a lot more. Three 3rd downs we had the coverage beat past the sticks:
1. Kupp (miscommunication)
2. Woods (contested drop)
3. Jefferson (drop)

Don’t expect this to continue. Uncharacteristic drops and chemistry will improve

Cooper Kupp now has as many receiving touchdowns (Three) this season as he did in all of 2020.

Sony Michel looked great and was the only reason the Rams’ offense was able to add 3pts late in the fourth quarter.

We were so spoiled with Staley’s defense last year. Seems like chunk plays are far more frequent with Morris at the helm.

After Sony Michel picked up 36 yards on one drive running the ball, McVay called a sweep to Cooper Kupp on third and two with a pre-snap motion runner to the same side (sorry if not explaining well). Play lost five yards. Matt Gay hit the field goal and the Rams come away w 3.

The NFL’s Next Gen Stats use tracking devices on every player’s shoulder pads to provide data beyond the ordinary statistics, and one piece of data from Sunday night was that Kupp had 11.3 yards of separation from the nearest defender on his 56-yard touchdown catch, the most separation on a completion more than 40 yards downfield in the last three seasons.

Bears safety Tashaun Gipson said it was just a mental screw-up by the Bears’ secondary that allowed Kupp to get that open. The Bears struggled to cover Kupp all day. He finished with a game-high seven catches and 108 yards.

Sean McVay was asked Friday if there’s a player Ramsey compares to, and he had a tough time thinking of one because of how special the Rams DB is.

“I think he’s kind of one-of-one,” McVay said. “I think that he can make an influence where you’re saying, ‘Who are these premier shutdown corners on the outside?’ He can do that. And then, ‘Who are these guys that can bump inside and really affect and influence the game?’ I think about when I first started coaching the guys that were really the premier nickels or stars as we call it – you’re talking about the Ronde Barbers, the Antoine Winfields – but Jalen is so big and he’s so physical. We can utilize him where, if you look at last week, he has taken on offensive linemen and snapping them back pretty good and blowing plays up. If you just watched him the whole game, you’d say that guy is a unique, special talent that plays with great energy and passion every single snap.”

Matchup to watch: DI Aaron Donald vs. LG Quenton Nelson

Individual matchups in the trenches don’t get much better than this. Since Indianapolis drafted Nelson in 2018, he has been the highest-graded interior offensive lineman in the NFL, and Donald has been the highest-graded defender in the league over that same stretch.

Donald played at least 10 snaps over both guard and tackle positions in Los Angeles’ opener against Chicago. There’s plenty of reason to expect the Rams to move him around to exploit favorable matchups, but we should at least get a few reps of Nelson against Donald.

Biggest storyline

Rams will test Indianapolis’ deep coverage for the second straight week
The Colts were one of two defenses to allow two touchdown passes on throws 20 or more yards downfield in Week 1. The other team that fell into that category was Chicago, which happened to play Indianapolis’ Week 2 opponent in its opener.

Los Angeles emphasized being more explosive on offense this offseason, bringing in Matthew Stafford at quarterback and speed at wide receiver with the additions of DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell. Stafford has recorded a 130.1 passer rating on throws 20 or more yards downfield since 2020 (third-highest in NFL).

The current over/under for this game is 47.5.
