    Von Miller is prioritizing his future with the Rams, because of the people in the Rams’ facilities. Their culture is the best in the league. You’d have to be falling into a position that’s obviously superior in order to want to leave this team. Nearly impossible at this point.

    Not trying to stir up Twitter at all, I think there are logical points to making a push for him but also understand the limits of their build, how scheme impacts the resources they put into this position and other variables that could prevent it (OL questions, Miller, $)

    Seahawks informed eight-time All-Pro and Pro-Bowl LB Bobby Wagner, a franchise icon, that they are releasing him, per source. Wagner arrived in Seattle on the same 2012 day as Russell Wilson and now leaves the same day, too. End of an era in Seattle.

    DV has talked about times where he had to rein Martz in. Where he advised him to be less of a prick (not DV’s word). His remarks spefically involved how Martz treated other coaches. I would imagine it all would have been a lot worse if DV hadn’t been that way. A lot of what Martz did to Warner was because DV promoted Kurt to the #2 spot and said that’s final. Martz didn;t know Kurt before, DV did, and DV wanted what he wanted. I always thought Martz took that out on Kurt. But then Trent Green was a Martz favorite, and Trent told Kurt that Martz always gave his qb a hard time until they proved themselves.

    I’ve seen reports casting doubt on this entire story. For example journalists are now saying the plant was never bombed or shelled. It’s a story in flux and it looks like it’s way too soon to be worrying about this.

    According to overthecap.com, Rams now have 227.707 M in total contracts. If AW retires, it takes it to 210.041.

    They can probably find space, but they have to extend Stafford and sign Noteboom (if AW retires). And if the buzz we hear is right, they will be re-doing Donald too.

    Don’t see how they get both Miller and OBJ. Or even just OBJ.

    • The Rams are still re-arranging some of the responsibilities and titles for current and new staff, although McVay did confirm new hires in offensive coordinator Liam Coen, offensive assistant Greg Olson, quality control coach Jake Peetz, linebackers coach Chris Beake, assistant defensive line coach Skyler Jones (who was hired by defensive line coach Eric Henderson, whose contract was extended late last month) and assistant special teams coach Jeremy Springer (who was hired by special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis). As I understand things, Chris Shula may move to a defensive backs coaching role alongside Jonathan Cooley, which is interesting in that Shula has not previously coached the position and Cooley was blocked from joining Kevin O’Connell’s staff in Minnesota. A source also said that offensive assistant Zak Kromer, who took on a larger role with the offensive line this season, has recently drawn interest from Pittsburgh for an offensive position.

    • As the corresponding move to Thomas Brown’s change to tight ends coach, he was tasked with hiring the new running backs coach. Brown did so this week, two sources told The Athletic, agreeing to terms with SMU/TCU assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples for the role. This hire is intriguing for a few reasons, not least because the Rams will return young, dynamic backs in Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson and Xavier Jones (all who have dealt with various injuries over the last two seasons), and have a decision to make about veteran back Sony Michel in free agency.

    Further, some assistants present in Indianapolis raved about Samples’ coaching potential. Brown’s decision-making process was important because he interviewed for head coaching and offensive coordinator jobs during this cycle. When coaches do that, they begin the process of selecting possible future staff should they one day get into those roles. Brown’s hiring of Samples might point toward a longer-term partnership between the two.

    As detailed thoroughly in the story, most people I talked to in Indy would be surprised if it were under $40M, yet the Rams will likely push for closer to $35M and Stafford’s own input (and appreciation for the way the roster is built) may factor into a lower number.

    Both McVay and Snead expressed how high a priority Stafford (and Donald) contracts are; however, I don’t feel a sense of overwhelming urgency from the team to rush through the process. There are some benefits to being “first” in the market when making new deals, including that others could then use the initial number as a baseline and the deal looks more team-friendly as time passes and others get done, but the Rams are less worried about that than getting it right as it specifically pertains to their own build.

    One well-placed source brought up Stafford’s own personality as an underrated, and large, factor in the negotiation process. Stafford won’t argue his own deal, obviously, but he does get the final say. Stafford has demonstrated a clear and public interest in how the Rams’ team-build works and functions as an interdependent ecosystem, and so he’ll be well-aware of what any financial savings on his contract could provide to other teammates as the Rams try to “run it back”. There’s also not a sense from the team that he’s personally about making financial demands, and while $45 million is a really popular number among quarterbacks/negotiators right now, his representation also has experience with structuring deals that help the team build (they previously did so for Drew Brees and the Saints).

    The Rams will soon have official word from left tackle Andrew Whitworth about whether he’ll retire, and if he does, extending tackle Joe Noteboom may become their next priority after Stafford and Donald. They also want to extend outside linebacker Von Miller, for whom they traded in November, and receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who they signed just 10 days after acquiring Miller. Both players were crucial contributors down the backstretch of the season.

    Beckham’s situation is a little more complicated than Miller’s, however, because he tore his ACL in the Super Bowl. When the Rams initially signed him, two sources said that the team was interested in pursuing a longer-term relationship with him. That sentiment hasn’t changed on the Rams’ side, despite the injury.

    Snead’s expectation is that Beckham won’t likely play a full 2022 season due to his rehab and recovery timeline, so the potential length and financial structure of any future contract would probably reflect that status (it could feature multiple years with a low cap hit in 2022, with active game incentives, for example). The Rams will get veteran receiver Robert Woods back into their position room by training camp (Woods tore his ACL in November, just a day after the Rams agreed to terms with Beckham). Importantly, the Rams did have a plan for Woods, Beckham, Triple Crown receiver Cooper Kupp and second-year receiver Van Jefferson to all play a role in the offense prior to Beckham’s injury. It’s an interesting “glass half-full” approach to see the midseason addition of a post-rehab Beckham as similar to what it was for the Rams in 2021 — although obviously under different circumstances.
