Just had a flash of memory with this post.

For a number of us nomads, the Rams were never home. We followed them from all parts of the nation. I started following them growing up in Chicago (horns + Fearsome Foursome + Roman Gabriel + boring Bears) and then moved to Minny from where I have remained faithful for decades.

Which meant that media coverage of the Rams was nearly unavailable. Neither the Tribune, Sun Times, Pioneer Press, or Star/Tribune ever covered the Rams. Neither did local radio or TV. There was no ESPN nor, of course, was there a web.

And that meant that, at season’s end, I would go for months with no Rams news. Until, finally, the preseason previews came out. Just like this one.

SI would have pigskin previews with thumbnails on each team. And the dedicated season preview pubs would come out with–gasp!–a couple of pages on each team! I’d finally be able to hear a bit about draft picks, acquisitions, and prognosticators’ take.

Then, when the season started, there’d be write-ups of the games–AP thumbnails for the Rams unless they had played the Vikings. And that would basically be it. The sum total of my media-acquired learning about the team.

Now, I look at a preview like this and, besides remembering what it was like to depend on these blurbs, I am astonished at how pedestrian it is. I mean, with the Web and ESPN and NFL Network, we know vastly more than this. There isn’t a bit of information here that we haven’t hashed over for weeks or more. There isn’t an analytical angle we don’t know by heart.

It’s a throw-back to another era. A simpler one, perhaps a better or worse one, certainly one less jaded. But I wonder how an outfit like this can still sell copies? Lots of nostalgic old buffers like me I guess.

    Exactly.

I respect Holt’s opinions since he’s played WR at a high level. And, I understand his concern about Austin’s production. But, Austin is not going to ever be a Torry Holt 80-catch-a-year guy. He will be a quick strike guy, though, and if he can get you 10-12 TDs in this offense, he will be a monster contributor. I also thought that in the 2-minute drill at the end of the first half, he showed that he could get open for short sideline passes that he could keep the chains moving at times. I think he can still be a “go to” guy in certain situations, just not a traditional No. 1. And, I’m sure from Holt’s perspective, Tavon was picked too high not to be that No. 1 WR.

I have no idea what Torry is talking about.
Tavon has been ‘quiet in camp’ ?
I think Tavon will be a dangerous weapon
that defenses have to account for on every down —
    assuming:
1 Tavon stops dropping passes, and
    2 he can stay healthy.

    Those are open questions.

But as we all know, he’s not a “WR”.
    He’s an “X factor” player. He’s a little
of this and a little of that. Whatever
you wanna name it. A TD-maker, maybe.

I have to say, it adds interesting drama. This was a game where it had an effect, too–at the end New Orleans was only up by 2 since they missed one. Some say, why add drama? Except in this case what it replaces–the “gimme” extra point–is a black hole of NON-drama.

So I vote “yes” on the new extra-point rule.

    .

Yeah, i agree. Though I also like the idea of eliminating the kick altogether
and just going for two after every TD.

I’m not sure which i like better.

I’m not sure how important Kicking
should be in a pro-football game.

Just curious to hear that view spelled out.

No, i’m not ambivalent: I can’t stand him.

I think he’s set up to be coach of the year though.
Add this personnel to ‘any’ aggressive, experienced

This rule change is silly. It’s a solution looking for a problem. Either keep the conversion kick where it is or get rid of it.

    I think i like it.
    Traditional PAT’s are kinda pointless.

Can you imagine what 2011 was like for the rookie receivers?

Thats exactly what i was thinking.

If i were an OC, I’m not sure how i would handle
that. How much do you throw at them?
What should you expect of them?
What are the dangers of throwing too
    much at them?

    Especially if they are basically
    ‘route runners’ like Stedman.
If you have a ‘freak’ like Calvin
or Moss, you can just give them
a few routes and say “go deep
and catch the ball” — but a guy
like Bailey has to know the routes.
I’m glad BS and Fisher worked him
into the lineup slowly last year.

And Tavon had even more to learn
cause he was playing all over the place.

And I tell you what, I am really puzzled as to why all the hype was on Clowney with this guy sitting there in the draft. And I am bewildered by all those GMs passing on him. Other than QB, I think a DT who can do what he appears to be able to do is perhaps the rarest and most valuable asset in FB.

They said Clowney was a once in a decade type player. Well, recognizing that he hasn’t faced other teams yet even in pre-season, Donald seems to be a once in 3 decades DT. And he plays next to Quin! Lord, this is going to be fun!

The only criticism i’ve seen aimed at Donald is about his size.
One scout said he was just too small and wouldnt be able
to beat Pro OLinemen. I dont agree, but thats one criticism
    thats out there.

In a way, he didnt really ‘drop’ that far.

I think G. Williams is set up to be coach of the year.
He’s got the personnel to have a ferocious defense.
I’ll be disappointed if they are not top five in
every category (barring injuries, of course)

I pity any QB that has a third and long
    against this group.

I assume we are gonna see a lot
of roll-outs against the Rams this year.
Seattle and SF can do that with
    their mobile QBs.

I who for years has been considered the board doom and gloomer expect much more than that.

My expectations are much higher than yours which is a reversal of fortunes, isn’t it?

106, if the Rams do not hit that mark Fisher should be fired IMO.

This team has talent, and enough talent to scheme around a few deficiencies.
    ——-
I’m strictly looking at this roster, as I have done every year. The talent is there.

    ———-
Even with Long and Wells out, and Kellen Clemens at qb they blew out some teams and surpassed expectation IMO.

This year they are in much better shape to withstand that with Joseph, Robinson and Barnes with another year of seasoning.

Both Seattle and Arizona’s lines were train wrecks last season.

Anyway I saw something in the Carolina game last year. A play action pass offense might just be the ticket for Bradford.

    Good = NFL level IMO.

    He can certainly be that.

    This is gonna be fun.

    Avatar photowv

@MikePereira: Reading more and more about the rise of illegal contact and defensive holding penalties. The refs are telling players at camps.

This is still the most interesting part of off-season rule enforcement. IF the league (the owners) want this enforced, it’s a huge game changer, imo.

DCs know the best way to shut down the dink and dunk game is to hold WRs. It disrupts the timing. It’s supposed to be illegal, but it’s only illegal if it gets called. And QBs usually take short drops on those dinky plays. Holding WRs throws a wrench into the machinery. Look at how good Seattle’s secondary was last year. Very physical, which means lots of bumping and holding. If a QB takes a short drop and can’t get rid of the ball in about 2 and a half seconds, he’s in trouble.

If the refs start calling holding on DBs, and continue to do so throughout each game, the passing game will open up even more.

The big question for me is, are the refs going to call it consistently every Sunday? Some ref teams call games much differently than others. It won’t take coaches long to figure out which groups call def holding, and which groups “let’em play”.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what happens.

If they really do limit contact, it will
certainly aid the teams with the best CBs.

I wonder how teams will attack the Rams D
    this year.
