September 6, 2014 at 6:19 pm in reply to: If the Rams offense can have an effective passing game and put at least 25 point #6333WinnbradParticipant
i think this is a reasonable expectation. the offense should be better than last year. but more than that. i think the defense will be better. this will result in more turnovers, better field position, and maybe even some more touchdowns.
Agreed. I’d be happy just to see the D get more 3-and-outs. That would help as much as anything. Giving the Rams D a chance to rest, and the O to ground-and-pound.
WinnbradParticipantI would say that if Bradford could learn anything from watching Hill, it’s precisely that–rapid decision making. You’re right, he’s no improviser. Though he can turn it up a notch in crunch-time circumstances, which is why he was so good inside the redzone. Doesn’t make him an improviser…I suspect they practiced redzone a lot.
In terms of seeing more and acting more quickly on it? I think he was learning that, actually. If the pre-season is any indication.
I agree. Bradford did look sharp in preseason. Very sharp, imo. Makes the injury that much tougher to take.
I’m excited to see what Hill does. I saw him play a lot (on TV) when he was in Detroit. He can scramble too.
WinnbradParticipantCassel is an ok QB, but if they cant beat the
Vikes at home…well…
===============w
vThe Vikes didn’t win a road game last year. Let’s hope that streak continues.
WinnbradParticipantHill relies more on quick decision making…which is probably his greatest strength.
Not to start a board war (ha!), but I think this is a strength Hill has over Bradford. I’m thrilled to think Hill will get rid of the ball faster. I always feel a sense of dread when Bradford hangs in the pocket and looks indecisive. He’s not an improviser.
Hill should be able to find open receivers. Seriously. The Vikes secondary is bad. It may be better than last year, but that is a very low bar.
WinnbradParticipantNo penalties. Ha Ha! Just kidding. Try to keep it under 10.
No turnovers.
Slow down AP.
Tight press coverage. None of this bullshit 10 yards off the receiver when it’s 3rd and 5.
Just win.
September 4, 2014 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Teams that lose opener go to playoffs only 25 percent of time #6074WinnbradParticipantI think Seattle will have trouble this year, and i dont think they
will repeat — but i think they will look great at home,
as per usual. I’m guessing the Packers will get routed.w
v============================
Losing Raji at NT makes this game almost unwinnable for GB. Almost.
On O, I expect to see no huddle all night from the Packers. Lots of hand signals and silent counts.
On D, they gotta stop Lynch, and they gotta keep Wilson from scrambling for 8 yards when it’s 3rd and 7. That’s a tall order.
Yeah, GB is gonna lose. But if their O can rack up points early and stay in the game, they won’t get routed.
On the other hand, they might get routed.
I’m gonna be watching defensive holding calls. That’s a terrible “football geek” thing to say, but I’m admitting it.
Seattle didn’t have a single defensive holding call against their secondary in the preseason. I definitely want to see if that continues, and what effect it has on their D.
WinnbradParticipantAgreed. It’s Britt and Quick. If they can beat man coverage, just every now and then, this offense can move the ball.
Now add in some Austin, not a lot, just a “biggish” play every now and then. Plus a play or two from him on special teams. We’d have something special on offense.
This team could win 10. I’m not gonna bet the farm on them winning 10, but I think they have a good chance.
September 4, 2014 at 11:46 am in reply to: If the Rams offense can have an effective passing game and put at least 25 point #6050WinnbradParticipantThat would probably make them a top ten scoring offense. I think the Saints avgd 25 per game last year.
It depends on Quick and Britt, and to some extent, Tavon. If the playmakers really have stepped up, and those receivers can beat one on one coverage, then Hill is good enough to get’em the ball. We could finally see some playmakng receivers on this team.
WinnbradParticipantI think Sam will get a phone call.
We’re still a week away from the season starting. Except the GB/Seattle game on Thursday.
Lots of teams could use a decent pass rusher. Sam is smart, everyone has seen the high motor and hard work. He could learn his job pretty quick on any team. When it’s 3rd and 17, everyone needs a pass rusher at DE. It’s not complicated. Get after the QB, and watch for the screen on your side.
As for the “distraction” – once the season starts, the season becomes the story. Maybe teams are waiting to get closer to opening day before giving Sam a call? I don’t know. How difficult is the play book for a situational pass rushing DE? Leonard Little figured it out. And he certainly wasn’t the sharpest tack.
At the end of the day, business is business. And the only thing that matters is winning (ok, and money). If a team believes that adding Sam will make them a better team, then they’d be foolish not to add him.
And yeah, there’s a chance Sam won’t get a call. It seems stupid to even think it, but yeah, it could happen.
WinnbradParticipantFewer penalties, fewer turnovers.
Pick apart the vikes secondary. Britt and Quick should have good days.
Cassel is the weak link. Patterson and Jennings could hurt us, but they depend on Cassel, and he’s the weak link.
Stop Peterson. Their whole offense revolves around him.
WinnbradParticipantThe Rams are building one hell of a football team. Hard to believe this team was 2-14 just 2 full seasons ago.
WinnbradParticipantVery good news. Considering his criminal record, I’m surprised it wasn’t longer.
WinnbradParticipantHard to imagine the Rams having a winning season
if they cant win a home game against
a team like the Vikings.w
vOuch. But true.
My guess, and that’s all this is, the Rams see a LOT of Adrian, some quick throws, and a few play-action shots down field. Probably to Patterson. The Rams D needs to be very aware of screens, especially early in the game. Slowing down the pass rush is gonna be a big deal for the Vikes. A good running game, some successful screens, and several quick passes will help take the steam out of the Rams front 4.
If the Vikes fall too far behind early, they’re toast. Their QB won’t survive our D-line.

WinnbradParticipantI wouldn’t even bring the first team. Maybe the punter and kicker.
Nope. I wouldn’t bring them either. Changed my mind…
Can we just sign some guys off the street and dress’em for one game, pay’em, and cut’em the same night?
WinnbradParticipantPlay backups only. See who can play, who knows the play book, who’s hustling.
Cut the rest of’em.
I hate preseason.
WinnbradParticipantOut of all the things ESPN could report on…
August 26, 2014 at 4:30 pm in reply to: I think the Rams can still have a good season. I am not writing it off #5241WinnbradParticipantI feel the same. It hurts losing Bradford because, again, he was looking sharp. But this team isn’t like Denver, Green Bay, Indy, New Orleans, etc. Those teams have to have their #1 QB under center or they won’t win 5 games. How many games did Green Bay win last year without Rodgers? None, I think. Maybe they tied one.
The Rams can still win games. Making the playoffs, I don’t know. I’m guessing the Frisco D takes a big step back this year. Lots of injuries and at least one suspension I can think of. That helps us. Seattle still looks monstrous.
WinnbradParticipantA few months ago, I watched a replay of the 69 Super Bowl, Jets/Colts. The QBs in that game, Namath, Morral, and Unitas, took a beating after almost every pass. Hits to the head, face, knees, lots of piling on, and a lot of the hits were late.
And if they scrambled…. Oh dear God have mercy on their souls. For those 3 QBs to have the long careers they did seems almost impossible to me now. I don’t know how they survived one full season, much less over a decade.
Watched a replay of a Chargers, Dolphins game from the 80s. Similar thing. The only difference was late hits were very few.
Now I watch a game, and if a QB gets his helmet grazed it’s 15 yards.
Me thinks we may have swung too far in one direction with this idea.
And zn is right. The league is making the pass rush the most important aspect of a D.

August 25, 2014 at 10:57 am in reply to: for those who are arguing Rams shoulda drafted a qb high #5030WinnbradParticipantI don’t know if that’s anyone here, but it’s out there, on the net.
#1. Hill is better than any goll-durn rookie.
#2. They used the picks to build a solid team. If it works out that next year they bring in a expectations-setting namebrand rookie, he is better off coming to a solid team.
This whole get your qb and build the team around him thing is wearing on me. It should be the other way around.
That’s regardless what everyone says when it’s draft time.
Roethlisberger went to a solid team. They didn’t need him to spread his wings overnight. Flacco, same. Wilson, same. Kaepernick, same. Foles went to a team that already had probably the best OL in the game. Dalton, same. Rodgers, same.
After years of seeing *what* *happens*, I think it’s the better way.
So personally I don’t care whether or not they have some namebrand rookie. Hill will be better than any of them could be this year, and next year if they add one (which they probably will) that kid, whoever it is, will be better off coming to a team with some receivers, some experience, some maturity, an OL, and a defense.
.
Yep.
That’s all I wanted to add.
Just a “yep”.
I’m too sad to add more…
WinnbradParticipantThis is a bummer. I can’t believe. Damn I hate preseason.
Well, at least we’ve got some receivers stepping up. Maybe Hill can move the ball.
August 24, 2014 at 3:12 pm in reply to: according to Schefter there is concern about Bradford's knee #4791WinnbradParticipantI don’t recall ever seeing a player with a torn ACL walking to the locker room.
WinnbradParticipantHoly crap! I can actually watch this game. Thanks Ag!!!
August 24, 2014 at 1:23 pm in reply to: re-broadcast time (Browns game) … actually NFL won't rebroadcast it (yet) #4759WinnbradParticipantYou guys might have to just break down and buy the online p-s game package.
It’s now just 14.99.

August 24, 2014 at 1:15 pm in reply to: re-broadcast time (Browns game) … actually NFL won't rebroadcast it (yet) #4756WinnbradParticipantYeah. I’ve tried twice now to DVR this. Oh well…
August 24, 2014 at 1:04 pm in reply to: re-broadcast time (Browns game) … actually NFL won't rebroadcast it (yet) #4751WinnbradParticipantThey changed it again. The Saints and Colts are on at 1pm on the NFL network.
WinnbradParticipantI think Seattle got dinged for one pass interference call, but no illegal contact or defensive holding.
WinnbradParticipantYou should set Auto Pick to take the “Best Player Available” (BPA), and not worry about it.
99% chance you’re gonna win your league that way. 🙂
Have fun!
WinnbradParticipant1. Bradford in “ready” mode. Definitely.
2. More plays from Quick and Britt. Whether it’s catching a 5 yard pass in traffic when it’s 3rd and 4, or catching a bomb down the sideline. We gotta have big plays from starting wideouts.
3. No penalties or turnovers from the starters.
August 20, 2014 at 11:01 am in reply to: how many WRs/TEs have to step up to have a solid passing attack #4451WinnbradParticipantThere are a lot of different ways it can work.
The GSOT had Bruce, Holt, Faulk, and then tacked on the speed of Hakim, with the chain moving ability of Proehl.
Pats: Moss (deep threat/alley-oop guy) and Welker (chain mover) worked great, long before Gronk and Hernandez appeared.
Colts: Harrison and Wayne, coupled with a great TE (Clark) and a pass catching back (James or Addai).
Pats again: Gronk, Hernadez, and the chain mover Welker.
Saints: Colston, Graham (Best receiving TE in football), Sproles (dump-offs/screens/the chain mover), Moore (another chain mover), and then Henderson and Meachem.
Packers: Everybody
Those are some of the recent, best passing attacks, imo.
But they all have two things in common: Great QBs, and coaches that will chunk it downfield from anywhere on the field.
The current Rams can’t match any of that, but I agree they can be very successful throwing the ball if they have a running game. Just the threat of running the ball effectively is enough. Sometimes the threat is greater than the execution.
The questions (for me anyway):
Can Britt and Quick consistently beat one on one coverage after a play action fake?
Can the O-line stay healthy and give Bradford time to look deep?I’m not concerned about Bailey. He’s suspended for 4 games and is useless for a month. When he comes back, I hope he contributes.

WinnbradParticipantI have no idea how people grade players. Is that done by the coaching staff and then made public to the sportswriters, or can anyone throw out a rating on a player like calculating a pitchers WHIP?
Lately, I have asked too many questions in my posts and I haven’t included any pictures. I tend to over-punctuate, as well. I give my posting a -3.6.
I’ve wondered that, also. I’m assuming that like all things “human”, there’s a lot of personal bias, subjective judgement, and flat out errors in any rating system.
I give your post a +1.2.
