Well, he’s no Chris Massey but I guess he will, have to do.
snowmanParticipantWell, Sherman is coming off an Achilles tear, like Kayvon Webster. Both of those guys might be out for half of next season before they can be cleared to play.
You have something against bald CBs, don’t you?
snowmanParticipantHilarious!
snowmanParticipantWow. I don’t remember an off season with more going on than this one.
snowmanParticipantJust something on how it’s harder to draft linemen nowadays

I think the Rams’ success in signing Andrew Whitworth to a three-year, $36 million deal last year, at 35 years old, is helping Patriots free-agent LT Nate Solder build a market. Solder is easily the top left tackle on the market, and could provide a quick-fix answer for the Broncos or Texans in an era when there are few sure-thing offensive linemen coming out of college.
Wait, what? I thought we signed Whitworth to a two-year deal.
snowmanParticipantIt will be interesting to see the list of players the Rams bring in for interviews and workouts; should tell us something about which way they are headed in the draft. Linebackers, cornerbacks, defensive tackles and offensive linemen should make up the majority of the draft prospects we see. Lacking a second round pick, I assume the Rams will evaluate a lot of relative unknowns that are expected to be chosen in rounds 4-6.
snowmanParticipantYes, someone like Wade Phillips can attract former players to the Rams and be a better fit for his defense. His reputation might also attract others.
I was pleased that Rams linebacker coach Joe Barry was running drills at the combine. I know that reviewing game tape is is far more important that a few drills done in shorts and a T-shirt, but it did put him closer to the group of players that we will likely be drafting.snowmanParticipantI just realized something. Wade’s 3-4 defense adds up to seven. His defensive scheme doesn’t use linebackers!
snowmanParticipantRams ‘frustrated’ with Ogletree’s run support
Per Rappaporthis tackling could be very frustrating.
wonder if with all these picks the rams try to trade up. either higher up the first round or into the second round from the third.
I dunno. Sixth round picks do not have a lot of trade value to move up much in the first round or into the third from where we are in the fourth round. My guess is that Snead moves around a lot within the third and fourth rounds, and maybe deals on for a future pick in 2019. Gonna be an interesting draft!
snowmanParticipantWe trade a starting LB who recently signed a 5-year contract for a couple of picks?
Kind of strange, yeah.
Anyway in 2018 clearing out AO means they have dead money on him for 6.4 M and save 5.2 M.
I would say rignt now that that’s not enough savings to make this look like a slamdunk move.
/…
i think it goes like this…scrolling farther down the spotrac website, it looks like this trade brings us $6.4 million in dead cap. That’s four years worth of his $8 million signing bonus over five years. Keeping Tree would have cost $3 million in salary, plus $7 million in roster bonus on March 15 plus the prorated part of his signing bonus $1.6 million? So it’s $6.4 million in dead cap and no linebacker vs. $11.6 million with Tree? that’s the $5.2 million difference you listed.
snowmanParticipantTraded before his $7 million roster bonus kicks in on March 16. I believe there is no dead cap money to be applied here.
snowmanParticipantWe trade a starting LB who recently signed a 5-year contract for a couple of picks?
snowmanParticipantIt seems that Tavon Austin either lost his mojo or just doesn’t fit into the new offensive scheme. Not enough ball to go around to Gurley, Woods, Kupp, Watkins (maybe) and trying to get the TEs more involved in 2018. Teams seem to sense when a player will likely be released and tend not make trade offers, so I would be mildly surprised if Austin is traded.
I have read so many negative comments about Mark Barron, it’s like he is the second coming of Jamie Duncan. Barron is a solid linebacker who leaves it all on the field. Maybe having a more natural OLB/Edge or a bigger DT/NT will help against the run game. I don’t see Barron as a problem.
I would be shocked if Rodger Saffold is traded, and shocked right out of my shoes with my hair smoldering if he is traded for two second round picks. Why would he be?
snowmanParticipantAn outside linebacker named Landry looked very good in the agility drills, comes from a 3-4 college system.
There was this drill where the linebackers or d-linemen had to run back, then sideways, then run forward and catch a pass thrown right at them. Quite a few players could not handle the pass, let it hit them in the chest and bounce off. Mike Mayock commented, “If the ball was a javelin, these guys would be dead.”
snowmanParticipantVery sorry to hear that GRITS has passed away. He was a passionate Rams fan. I was happy for him when the Rams moved back to LA because I knew that was tremendously important to him. I’m glad that he got to see them win the division and make the playoffs as the LA Rams. RIP GRITS.
snowmanParticipantIan Rapoport is reporting the same thing. No word on what we are getting from the Dolphins.
snowmanParticipant1 Improve Run Defense. How? I dunno, draft a big fat DT ?
2 Improve Redzone Offense. How? I dunno.
3. Quality depth on OLine. Draft/sign some players.
4. Sign Donald, Joyner, Watkins, Quinn.
5. Draft lots of good CBs and a LB.
Is that about it?
w
vI think you nailed it, more or less.
Rams might want to draft a bigger DT to rotate with Brockers or pair with him at certain times to strengthen the run defense up the middle. Maybe a more natural ILB will help.
On the offensive line, I think we need to draft the “center of the future” to replace Sullivan in a couple of years, unless one of the backup guards can shift over. LOT can wait until next draft.
CBs and Safeties kinda depends on what we do with our own free agents. Replace some, hopefully we keep the best ones like Joyner and Robey-Coleman; maybe Davis. One thing you missed, our long snapper is a UFA. I hope you don’t expect Hekker to snap the ball to himself?
snowmanParticipantI doubt that much will come of Mueller’s investigation. This woman could be made a scape goat and everyone and te higher-ups who pull the strings will get nothing. I expect to be disappointed.
February 28, 2018 at 12:18 pm in reply to: Schefter: “Rams finalizing trade with Chiefs for CB Marcus Peters #83262snowmanParticipantI don’t pretend to know how the Rams front office works together with the coaching staff on player acquisition, but I gotta believe that Snead approached both McVay and Phillips about trading for Peters, and they gave the thumbs up after weighing the pros and cons of having him on the roster. For Snead and Demoff, it helps them manage the cap and gives them a lot more flexibility in the draft. For McVay and Phillips, it was about how they use him in the defense, how coach-able he is and what he will be like in the locker room.
snowmanParticipantIt’s a political shitstorm out there and Trump is still in the White House. I think he stays there until he wants out, and his ego probably won’t permit him to just quit. I think he serves the full term and “retires” having made America great again, in his opinion.
snowmanParticipantAg, I had no idea you were going through all of that! I am glad to hear that you are home and feeling better, i hope that you continue to improve.
snowmanParticipant“By selecting Orlando Brown, the Rams get Andrew Whitworth’s replacement at left tackle a year early instead of waiting for the 36-year old to decline,” Tainer writes. “Brown (son of the great Browns/Ravens left tackle of the 1990s) has Jonathan Ogden-caliber measurables, ideal bloodlines and an ornery streak. He’s also the typical raw Big 12 spread-offense tackle, so it will take a year as Whitworth’s understudy before he can reliably protect Jared Goff’s blind side.”
Yeah, I don’t like drafting left tackles in the first round who need to be taught how to play with your hand in the dirt. We have had bad results drafting athletic tackles who need to learn how to play in a pro style offense.
A lot of “ifs” right now with our own free agents at CB and Safety. Any signings leading up to draft day will probably clear things up.
snowmanParticipantsnowmanParticipantYes, the OL is very important and it seems like a team never has enough talent.
I hope we can re-sign Sullivan for at least one more year. I like Blythe but I don’t know if he is ready to be a starter. I do see him as inheriting the job at some point, but I don’t want it to be this coming season. Together they were solid.
Different with LT. Whitworth is signed for another year but I don’t see his replacement on the roster now. The Rams have been terrible at draft LOTs, I hope that changes in this next draft.
snowmanParticipantThis clip is hilarious! It’s from a show called Better late Than Never starring Terry Bradshaw, George Foreman, Henry Winkler and William Shatner. You get know a little more about TB.
snowmanParticipantI hope we can afford him. Watkins, Woods, Kupp and Reynolds are good, young players. Cooper too is a special teams standout and decent WR in his own right.
snowmanParticipanthey Snowman, enjoy the Super Bowl festivities.
SB 50 was in my hometown and it was very cool to attend the daily activities and programs they had here locally. One of my favorites was a low key NFL Championship exhibit at a smpall local art museum. that exhibit had display from various NFL teams…. one was a piece of the wooden goal post from the 1958 Championship game (Colts Giants at Yankee stadium) that was torn down by the fans…. Dick Vermiel’s jacket from SB 34 was also on display…
I just saw that it’s 13 degrees in Minny, thus, hopefully most of the events are held indoors.
Just curious, as a Minnesota native… were you rooting for the Vikes or Eagles in the NFC Championship?
Thanks joe,
I might check out the free stuff on Saturday. Most of the SB stuff is happening in Minneapolis and I work in Saint Paul, plus security is tight and its only 1 degree outside right now. I have lots of excuses for staying home!
I used to live in Allentown, PA so I went to a couple of Eagles games and have friends who are Eagles fans, so I kind of like the Eagles. Of course my wife and her family are Viking fans and they are the local team, so I have been happy for them that their team has done well. From the sheer oddity of it, I was hoping the Vikings would win and create this match-up of a four-time loser vs. five time winner. The locals would go bananas too, and the Packer fans here would be besides themselves!
snowmanParticipantIs it a big name performing, a local band, or just NFL owners really singing karaoke? Just wondering.
LOL! The entertainment was Sting, that guy from a band called The Police.
snowmanParticipantJags gave up 42 points to Pittsburgh. I can see New England scoring close to that but not giving up enough points to lose. New England over Jacksonville and Brady announces that he intends to play until he turns 50.
Vikings needed a miracle pass and one of the worst tackles I have ever seen to beat the Saints in Minnesota. They won’t get that again. Philadelphia over Minnesota and my brother-in-law throws himself into a snowbank.
January 9, 2018 at 5:11 pm in reply to: informal poll: what is your view of the Rams future after Atlanta? #80104snowmanParticipantI fell that they have young, talented players on offense and defense that will be with the team for years to come, though they need experience. I feel that they have a very good head coach and coaching staff, most of whom will stick around. I feel that the front office did a great job of acquiring quality free agents at key positions of need, while leaving a lot of cap room for 2018 and 19, and looking forward to what they do next. Optimistic.
