This is a MUST win game if the Rams have any hope for the playoffs.

The Panthers or Falcons will grab one of the wild card spots–the other wins their division.

That leaves one wild card or the division for the Rams to win.

If the Rams stumble here–in a game they SHOULD win–they’re done. If they DO win they set up a critical game against the Vikes. These are the games where seasons are made or lost.

    So we’ll see.

    In terms of targets:

Tavon is tied with Cook at 32 targets each.

Of that, Cook has a 53 percent rating(17-32) and Tavon has a 62.5 percent rating(20-32)

Next on the list is Kenny Britt with 24 targets. 50 percent(12-24)

    Then it’s:

    Cunningham: 76.2 percent (16-21)

    Bailey: 55.6 (10-18)

    Kendricks: 50 percent (7-14)

    Gurley: 87.5 (7-8)

    Mason: 50 (3-6)

    Quick: 25 (1-4)

    Harkey 66.7 (2-3)

This 9ers game should be a high scoring affair–the number 31 ranked offense(Rams) vs. the #32 ranked offense(9ers)

Both teams are particularly woeful trying to pass the football.

I get the impression Barron is playing
    as well as anyone.

He may be better than Ogletree
    in certain ways.

I am not going to get into a shouting match about the Rams greatest linebacker because everyone knows that shouting on the internet looks LIKE THIS! And that just seems like a lot of typing. Barron–yes–he’s having a very good year but I’ll tell you this: HE’S NO JOHNNY HEKKER!!!!!

And really–your gushy love affair with Barron….I didn’t want to say it but it’s getting a little creepy at this point. People are starting to notice.

It’s a divisional game so it will be a war.

9ers coming off of ten days rest.

Rams offense coming off three quarters rest.

Could go either way–both ways–any way. But I believe the Rams will win the game. I HOPE they can do it with a mediocre offense and not the dismal offense that usually shows up for games. I do not want to see this offense lose the game through turnovers. If they aren’t going to score than just take a knee every snap and punt. Let the defense deal with it. But it would be NICE if they scored.

Hopefully Gurley doesn’t have to be All-World this week. That is going to get tiring pretty quick.

Don’t have a strong feeling of a win or loss here–just going on hope.

That’s an interesting topic. You up for doing weekly updates?

    .

Well, that’s quite a heavy burden you’re placing on me. I’ll certainly need a pay raise. Stock options are acceptable.

Okay–forget all that. I’ll do what I can–but if the Rams begin to slide I’m done. It just gets frustrating at that point. I will only live in my happy world.

Let’s pair the GSOT offense with this defense.

    Could you imagine?

They’ve played 6 games plus 4 pre-season games. It really is time the offense gets its act together. Other than Gurley who had 97 yards AFTER contact. They have to get something going with the passing game. I don’t have the answers. But I do know I have seen enough of Cook. He is one big tease. He looks the part–but his head is in the clouds. Against a better offensive team the Rams lose today because of his sloppiness. He constantly catches BEFORE the marker on 3rd downs and can’t get to the marker. He drops passes he should get. He looks sloppy.

I wish they could trade him, really.

I DO think it’s now or never. I just can’t imagine this team coming out with a clunker today. What would that say about them? If this becomes another Washington game, I just don’t know. If not now, when? If not them, who? If not how, why? If not why, where?

Besides, I’ve got 10 bucks riding in my survivor pool.

If they lose this game I can’t see them making the playoffs or having a winning record. If they lose this game I’m not sure what I see. 2 weeks to prepare, out of the bye–a weaker team AT home. I don’t know what excuse could be made.

    Gotta win!

    The good

Todd Gurley – BEAST! But here is the kicker. Even with 159 yards rushing from TG, the Rams got only 10 points and nothing in the pass game. Something doesn’t jive there. That should have opened PA, or at least given Foles an extra beat or two in the pocket. Really a strange phenomenon to me.

Rams defense – Played extremely well and better than I thought they would. Three to’s against Aaron Rodgers and really just 14 points allowed is an exceptional defensive performance. Other than a couple of mental errors, they were strong. Offense put them in bad positions.

Janoris Jenkins – He got looks but was only thrown at once that I recall. He has really cleaned up his fundamentals.

Mark Barron – Was all over the field today making tackles and had a nice deflection which caused an INT.

Run blocking – Was intermittent, but when it was good, it was very good.

Johnny Hekker – Great heads up play by the Hekker. Kept the play alive by buying time, made a risky throw but got away with it.

    The bad

Nick Foles – Taking two delay of game penalties. When you lean down under center and look up, you are looking right at the play clock. No excuse for it.

Cignetti – Was bad today and did absolutely nothing to help his o-line or the qb in the pass game. When you qb is holding onto the ball to long and you o-line can’t hold off the pass rush…you as the OC need to adjust. Quick throws, screens, slants, something to slow down the rush and get Foles some easy throws. Its like a shooter in basketball, sometimes you need a lay-up just to see the ball go through the net.

Zuerlin – Low trajectory on one kick, poor accuracy on another. Would you really trust him in a BIG game to win it?

    The ugly

Nick Foles – Yep he shows up in two categories. I know he got very little help from his o-line, but his decision making was absolutely horrid. He forced a number of passes and when he did have time to throw, his accuracy was not good. I understand that a qb will have bad days, but I’m seeing some tendencies in Foles that I have seen before. Take a sack Nick, sometimes its better than the alternative.

Receiving core – With the exception of Austin and Bailey, who didn’t get many opportunities in the game, save the Heykel and Jekyll play…they were all bad. Cook is Cook and I still don’t know why Quick jumped for the ball when he didn’t have to. More times than not when you see that type of play. the receiver drops the pass. Britt was invisible, and Kendricks has never been a consistent option. I didn’t see as many drops as whats being reported, but nobody stood up either!

Pass pro – Way to many breakdowns by the o-line from mental to physical errors. Reynolds blowing a blitz assignment, GRob getting whipped, Saffold, Barnes, Hav, Brown…take your pick. Just an awful performance today by a unit that we hoped was gaining some momentum.

Coaching – Jeff Fisher was horrible in clock management and understanding game situations. Down two scores in the 4th quarter the Rams should have been in hurry up mode. With 4:00 left in the game they were acting like they were up two scores, instead of behind two.

A 63 yard fg really Jeff? He is totally enamored with the fact that GZ has a big leg. We’ve seen it now for 4 years that he has been the Rams HC. Go for it, I think NFL stats will prove 4th and 7 has a better chance of being made over a 63 yard fg. Play the percentages!!!

Jeff Fisher is also responsible for what we are seeing from the o-line. Most of us expect a young inexperienced o-line to be up and down. So he really didn’t give this team much room for error by relying on one. He doesn’t have Tom Brady at qb, nor does he have Julio Jones at receiver.

When you have players of that caliber, you can overcome some deficiencies upfront. You can win some games that you might otherwise lose, and remain competitive in the division while you give a unit time to come together.

With Fisher its always been the necessary pieces on offense that continue to hold his teams back. You would think he would adjust after so many years, but obviously you can’t teach this old dog, new tricks!.

Just poor coaching and careless play on offense that has to be demoralizing to a defense that once again…played its heart out!!

I find it hard to disagree with any of that.

    That pretty much nails it.

I want to say Donald because they are going to have their hands full with him. But Rodgers is a smart guy–I don’t see him moving anywhere but to the outside as much as possible–maybe even before the ball is snapped. So I will go with Quinn this week.

I have a feeling blitzing could be limited this week due to Rodgers quick release and mastery of the field.

    Hmm.

So what yer sayin, PA, is that Rodgers might cleverly start running away from the rush even before the ball is snapped?

That is something I’d like to see. It could lead to some errant snaps.

I’m not sure about Rodgers, but if it was me…and I looked out and saw Aaron Donald and that Rams front four, I’d begin tap dancing my way out of the stadium before I made it out of the tunnel. But that’s me.

As some of you will recall in the chat room, I kept saying things like, “Don’t sweat it guys…the Rams got this.”

I also mentioned that if you mix cheezwhiz and peanut butter and put it in a squeeze bottle and call it Cheeze-Nut, you’d never have to work again.

Then there was the comment how football would be a much more interesting sport if played on a hockey rink. And then how “rink” was a weird word.

But this week I got none of that.

This week I’m VERY concerned. Aaron Rodgers has like–Superman numbers at Lambeau Field.

This is from an article last month:

Saying Rodgers is pretty good at home is like saying Donald Trump is pretty rich and pretty controversial. In the last two seasons at Lambeau Field, Rodgers has completed 241 of 350 passes for 3,375 yards, with 33 touchdowns and no interceptions. Throw in the Packers’ two home playoff games in the last two seasons, and Rodgers’s numbers improve to 282-for-411, 3,868 yards, 37 TDs, 0 INT.

Really: 37 touchdowns and no interceptions. That works out to a passer rating of 128.5.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/09/19/seahawks-face-a-tall-order-stopping-aaron-rodgers-at-lambeau/

Add in the fact that the Rams just came off a tough road victory and are playing a second straight road game(not counting the Pittsburgh invasion of the Edward Jones Dome)and it looks like a tall order.

I expect a letdown for this one.

    I hope I’m wrong.

That’s a fact. I just made it up.

Anyway–I believe that would be the case.

Rams: Well, we’ve got Chris Givens for sale. We took him in the 4th. Tell ya what…give us a fifth and we’ll call it even.

    Ravens: LMAO! No thanks.

Rams: Well, now hold on, hold on. You guys need a receiver. We aren’t kidding anybody here. Tell you what….6th rounder. We like you.

Ravens: Who else you throwing in that deal?

Rams: Seriously? Okay–okay….look, we gotta make some moves here….give us a 7th next year…and he’s yours. Done.

Ravens: Uh…next year? Kinda need some of those picks for a receiver next year.

    Rams: Yeah–but we’re giving you a receiver…and at that price…it’s GIVING.

Ravens: Eh….IS he a receiver though? Kinda limited.

    Rams: Sigh. Okay…2017? A 7th?

Ravens: I….don’t…know…there are other guys out there….

    Rams: 2018!!!! Please…please…2018…a 7th. We gotta get something here. We’ll owe you…really.

Ravens: Well…..Harbaugh’s brother isn’t in the division anymore. Okay. A 7th in 2018. We could all be dead by then anyway…am I right? Hah-hah-hah-hah!

    Rams: Thank you!

Maybe that’s how it went. Or maybe the bidding started with a 7th in 2099 and worked its way down to 2018.

In any case…they woulda got nothing so…what the heck.

Rams must take care of the football against Arizona and they’ll have a chance. Kaepernick threw 4 ints against their defense–two went for touchdowns. If they play typical sloppy offense–they’ll get blown out. Cards also had a pick 6 against Chicago so this team can return those ints. Make the Cardinals EARN it against our defense. The Cards have not been tested by a great defense yet. The Rams will give them their biggest challenge there–but if the offense stumbles, gives up ints and turnovers, it’ll be a long day.

The Rams CAN beat this team.

But it depends on whether the good defense shows up and if the offense doesn’t go into meltdown.

    ===============================

Well if I’m not mistaken, Arians/Palmer are just gonna
say screw the pass-rush, ATTACK with passes all over
the field – short, medium, deep, middle.

It might be strength against stength. Ya know.
Rams Pass Rush vs Cards Pass-attack

    w
    v

Oh it’ll be a challenge. Cards will have quick throws ready, I’m sure, because Palmer is a tree back there. If the rush gets to him it’s over. I expect quick screens and also a lot of rush attempts. But I worry less about the defense and more about another offensive meltdown. 6 minutes into the game the 9ers were down by two touchdowns–both on pick sixes.

If that happens to the Rams–game over. Early.

If this Rams offense doesn’t improve quickly–great defensive performances won’t matter. They’ll just lose more 12-6 games.

I thought that they were extremely predictable running on 1st down.

I quickly looked at a drive chart and 8 out of 9 times on their first couple of possessions they ran on 1st down.

Steelers were waiting for it every time.

I also don’t know why they didn’t try some more screens.

Their plan seemed pretty boring and predictable—which is fine if you have the guys who are handling the defense and enforce their will. That didn’t happen.
