Participantin most cases, in the final week of preseason, most starters only play 1 or 2 series…
If Goff quit while he was ahead after the 1st drive of his last preseason game I think fans and the media would be even more obsessed with wanting Goff to start……
Goff was 4-5 with a nice TD pass to cap off the 1st drive in that final preseason game …. I was thinking to myself, “damn this guy looks pretty good” He looked good, calm confident and executed very well…..
then a few series later, Goff suddenly turned into Alan Alda from the movie Paper Lion, (at least he didn’t run into the goal post)
They’re 2-1, that’s what matters………..I bet George Allen wouldn’t start Goff either…..
like WV said, the staff evaluate these QBs everyday, they know much better than we do…… in addition maybe they sense that Goff himself doesn’t feel ready……

ParticipantGurley, ……..defenses are keying on him, especially with a QB like Case that gives a strong perception that the Rams have a one dimensional run offense with a ROY in the backfield…..
it was good to see the Rams remain patient with the run game even when they were down 20-10….. Gurley had 27 carries, only 10 or so in the 1st half… I thought that he was utilized well, especially in the 2nd half….
Regarding Benny, he did convert the long 3rd and 17…it was a nice play call with the delayed handoff … that 22 yard run by Benny caught the Bucs off guard to get the 1st down that ultimately set up a 53 yarder by Zuerliner. Speaking Zuerline… he’s have a very solid year thus far… special teams was a big factor yesterday, Greg the Leg delivered and Aguayo for the Bucs did not…..
just image if they still had Tre Mason…… Rams would be really deep at RB…

ParticipantA million great phrases, but it is his mastery of story-telling that truly set him above everyone else. He just knew how to do it. Interrupting the story to make the call, or picking the story up again after an inning change over, and what stories.
Exactly. It’s not about those 5 great calls he made on the YouTube video, it’s the story telling between pitches.
Thanks Vin for letting us know that Marquis Grissom was named after the car that his dad assembled, the Mercury Marquis, at the Ford plant. His dad liked the sound of the name so much that he named his 8th child Marquis….

Vin Scully’s melodic and poetic voice painted my childhood. He is truly the best I ever heard, by far, and I will miss him.
67 years calling Dodgers games. Do you know that that is half the history of the Giants? The Giants are 134 years old. Not quite half the history of the Dodgers, who have been around longer. But this is a guy who knew Jackie Robinson personally.
Same here Zooey……KFI Los Angeles…… growing up in the 70’s one of my brothers was / is a big Dodger fan, so as the sun set to the west (got that Jared Goff?) which provided the right ionosphere layer allowing an optimal AM radio signal for us 400 miles north in Santa Clara, CA we’d pick up the Dodger games on our old Zenith AM radio on 640 AM on the dial
just last Tuesday, I was thumbing through my Twitter feed shortly after my beloved Giants blew yet ANOTHER FUCKING SAVE opportunity, Vinnie Tweeted, “The Giants are driven to their knees again by the bullpen” ….. I thought to myself “FUCK YOU VIN SCULLY, you’re still great”…..

ParticipantIt’s late in the 4th quarter. Rams are down by 4 pts. Keenum has been harried and abused by the Seattle defense the entire game. The crowd is silent as his teammates with heads down watch the trainers lift Keenum to his feet. Unable to continue he is helped from the field. Que Jared Goff, the bright-eyed rookie who had just been named QB2 prior to the game. What Goff lacks in know-how is more than compensated for with moxie and hutzbah. He hoists the comatose offense onto his back and with the grit of a thousand Duke Waynes wills his team the length of the field and into the endzone for the victory.
A Hollywood story befitting a Hollywood team.

Patriots Beat Rams, 30-28, on a ‘Hail Irving’ : New England Win Spoils Fine Debut by Jim Everett
November 17, 1986|KEN PETERS | Times Staff Writer
Irving Fryar said it was a “Hail Mary” pass, but New England Coach Raymond Berry disagreed.
“It’s called a ‘Miracle Right,”‘ a beaming Berry said Sunday after the Patriots pulled out a 30-28 victory over the Rams on the final play of the game.
The winning play was a floating, 25-yard touchdown pass from Tony Eason that Fryar hauled down in a crowd at the back of the end zone. Another Patriot receiver, Stanley Morgan, leaped high in a group of Ram defenders to tip the ball, then Fryar made a diving catch.
“I was just trying to stay in the end zone,” said Fryar, who’d lost two fumbles earlier in the game but also caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Eason midway through the fourth quarter to pull the Patriots to within 28-23.
“Stanley tipped it but I didn’t see that. I just got there and it was in my hands,” Fryar said.
The stunning finale dampened what was nevertheless a memorable pro debut by the Rams’ Jim Everett. The rookie quarterback threw three touchdown passes to rally the Rams from a 13-0 deficit in the second quarter.
Eason, who set club records with 36 completions and 52 attempts while throwing for 375 yards, agreed with Berry that the winning touchdown was something of a miracle.
“I just threw it up for grabs and prayed,” he said. “It was great.”
Starting from the Patriots’ 13 with 1:45 remaining, Eason marched his team to the Ram end zone, picking up 26 of the yards on a scramble on the play before the winning throw.
The victory gave the Patriots an 8-3 record and kept their playoff hopes alive in the AFC East. The Rams are 7-4 and a half-game behind San Francisco in the NFC West. The 49ers play Washington tonight.
Everett, seen as the quarterback who can finally give the Rams a passing threat, said he had mixed emotions about his first NFL game.
“I felt happy I had a chance to get in the game, but I’m sad we lost,” he said. “I felt good about what I did.”
Everett replaced Steve Dils and connected on scoring throws of 34 yards to Henry Ellard and 24 yards to Barry Redden as the Rams pulled to within 16-14 by halftime.
Then, after Redden scored on an 11-yard run to give the Rams a 21-16 lead 5:45 into the third quarter, Everett threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Ellard early in the fourth period for a 28-16 lead.
Everett, the former Purdue star acquired by the Rams from the Houston Oilers early this season, completed 12 of 19 passes for 193 yards and was not intercepted by the Patriots, who came into the game with the NFL’s second-best pass defense.
The Rams’ Eric Dickerson, falling behind his pace when he set the NFL single-season rushing mark of 2,105 yards in 1984, gained 102 yards on 24 carries. He has 1,300 yards through 11 games this season, compared to 1,320 at the same juncture two years ago.
On their final drive, the Patriots faced a fourth-and-7 at their 42-yard line, but Eason hit Tony Collins with a 7-yard pass to keep the march alive. Other key plays included an 18-yard pass to Morgan and a 13-yarder to Fryar.
The Patriots’ earlier scoring came on field goals of 42, 45 and 19 yards by Tony Franklin, and Rod McSwain’s 31-yard touchdown run with a punt he’d just blocked.
Eason improved his own club record with the 36 completions, seven more than his mark set two years ago. His 52 attempts also was a Patriot high, two more than the standard set by Babe Parilli in 1965.
Morgan wound up with seven receptions for 118 yards, Collins had 10 for 66, and Fryar had six for 72.
Ellard led the Rams’ receivers with eight catches for 129 yards.
Greeted by a rousing ovation when he entered the game, Everett handed off to Redden for a 2-yard gain on his first play as a pro, was sacked on the next, and threw an incomplete pass on third down.
But he quickly got another chance as, for the second time in the first half, the Patriots’ Fryar fumbled a punt and Ram linebacker Norwood Vann recovered, this time at the New England 34-yard line.
On the next play, Everett lofted a perfect pass to Ellard in the back of the end zone.
After throwing his first pro pass incomplete, Everett connected on six in a row for 101 yards, including the touchdown pass to Redden with 1:30 left in the first half.
After that Ram touchdown, Eason brought his team right back, driving New England to a first-and-goal at Los Angeles’ 1-yard line. But the Rams’ defense stopped the Patriots three times, and they settled for a 19-yard field goal by Franklin and a 16-14 halftime lead.
Franklin’s third field goal of the game, his 12th in a row, gave him 27 for the season and bettered the club record of 26 set by John Smith in 1980.

ParticipantI’m not sure they rebound
Gabbert is not a good QB, he should’ve been picked off at least 2 or 3 times Monday night. He threw passes in the ground, off target and the 49ers still won 28-0
Russell Wilson is not Blaine Gabbert
In addition the Rams have a chronic 3rd down conversion problem that they still haven’t figured out.

ParticipantI think Chip Kelly is a better coach than people give him credit for.
I think Jeff Fisher is vastly overrated……
Perhaps the move to LA distracted players, but this team is not smart and is playing the same way the past 5 years in STL…no discipline or football smarts…
Turning points were:
1) Tavon Austin’s fair catch inside the 10, just not smart football there. They start the drive at the 9 instead of maybe the 25 with a touchback or a return by Tavon… The undrafted QB had no choice but to run Gurley from there and SF knew it, from then on, field position was lost… ……with this type of Rams offense, it’s all about field position.
2) Gurley’s taunting penalty…. 4th and 1, Rams go with Gurley, he gets the 1st down to the 49er 30, but is penalized 15 yards for taunting that set up the Int by the undrafted QB.NO FOOTBALL SMARTS… these little things resulted in huge negative factors for LA.. Fisher’s penalty and stupid football culture is STILL NOT FIXED…
At halftime, it was clear that Case didn’t have it… I think the halftime yelling and adjustments worked for a while for the defense, but to ask for the defense to sustain that with a QB like Case can’t be done, unless you play for Denver….
an additional adjustment that I wish that the Rams made was to put in Mannion at the start of the 3rd qtr….you’re not damaging the confidence of Case, he was undrafted anyway. He was missing targets badly…
I don’t understand why coaches do not yank the QB more often when their QB is struggling. Case didn’t have it yesterday, so what, bench him and put in a reliever. Fisher stuck too long with Foles last year again with Case yesterday…. use your friggen bull pen and see what Mannion can do….
14-0 early in the 4th qtr, at that point I still thought that the Rams had a chance to win, SF’s offense was almost as ugly as LAs, but was aided with 100 yards in LA penalties, the killer was Donald’s spike of his helmet…
C’mon Rams you’re much better than that……

Rams pass offense vs. 49ers pass defense: The Rams can’t go anywhere but up after finishing last in the NFL in passing offense last season. Quarterback Case Keenum does not have a huge arm, but he was efficient during four exhibition games. In six games last season, Keenum completed 61% of his passes for 828 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception. Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt are the top receivers and Lance Kendricks and Tyler Higbee the tight ends. Left tackle Greg Robinson must protect Keenum’s blind side. The 49ers ranked 29th in the NFL last season with 28 sacks. Free safety Eric Reid leads the secondary. EDGE: 49ers
Rams run offense vs. 49ers run defense: Rams running back Todd Gurley was the NFL offensive rookie of the year after rushing for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. And he did it despite not starting until the fourth game. Benny Cunningham is Gurley’s backup. Both run behind a line that returns intact from last season if right tackle Rob Havenstein is fully recovered from a foot injury. The 49ers’ 3-4 scheme features tackle Arik Armstead, a 2015 first-round draft picks. Inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman leads the unit that will try to slow down Gurley. EDGE: Rams
49ers pass offense vs. Rams pass defense: Quarterback Blaine Gabbert is at the controls of first-year Coach Chip Kelly’s offense, with Colin Kaepernick on the bench. Last season, Gabbert completed 63.1% of his passes, 10 for touchdowns, with seven interceptions. Torrey Smith had 33 receptions and Quinton Patton and Vance McDonald each had 30 for a team that ranked 29th in passing offense last season. Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson leads a secondary that gets its first test since the departures of free-agent cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod. The Rams are counting on the defensive line to pressure Gabbert. EDGE: Rams
49ers run offense vs. Rams run defense: Carlos Hyde rushed for 470 yards and three touchdowns in seven games last season. Guard Anthony Davis, the No. 11 pick in the 2010 draft, is back after an injury-plagued season that led to a brief retirement. The Rams gave up 113.8 yards rushing per game in 2015, but this is a reconfigured front seven. The line features ends Robert Quinn and William Hayes and tackles Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers. Alec Ogletree is the new middle linebacker, and Mark Barron begins the season at weak-side linebacker for a unit that will often feature five defensive backs EDGE: Rams
Special teams: Rams punter Johnny Hekker made the Pro Bowl last season after averaging 47.9 yards per kick. Kicker Greg Zuerlein is coming off an inconsistent performance in 2015, when he made only 20 of 30 field-goal attempts. Benny Cunningham averaged 28.6 yards per kickoff return, Tavon Austin 7.9 yards per punt return. Veteran 49ers kicker Phil Dawson, entering his 18th NFL season, made 24 of 27 field-goal attempts in 2015. Punter Bradley Pinion averaged 43.6 yards. Kickoff and punt returner Bruce Ellington suffered a season-ending hamstring injury during the exhibition season. EDGE: Rams
Gary Klein’s pick: The Rams return to the scene of their season-ending overtime defeat in 2015. The storybook called for local boy Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick in the draft, to start against the team he grew up rooting for. Instead it’s Keenum, who leads a Rams team that made no significant upgrades on offense and turned over the defense to Ogletree. This is an NFC West game the Rams should win. If they do, it sets them up nicely for a home opener against the Seattle Seahawks with a chance to start 2-0 in the division. If they lose, it puts them in a hole going into Pete Carroll’s return to the Coliseum. Rams 24, 49ers 20.

ParticipantMy understanding is that wood stoves are now around 80-85% efficient because they are now designed to pipe the smoke and gasses back into the fire where they re-ignite. I thought it was that way since the mid-80s. There are times when I burn and you go outside and look at the chimney and there’s no smoke at all.
correct, unfortunately, folks just shove a wood burning stove into the fireplace without proper exhaust….., or worse, most folks in the SF bay area most do not have a stove and just burn in the fireplace.
Mine is installed correctly, with a stainless steel exhaust……. with seasoned firewood it burns efficiently….
burning seasoned wood (Oak, Almond, etc) is the key……

Article below on rebates offered to convert wood stoves to to gas….. rebates got snapped up in one day in San Josie…..
BTW, our wood of choice has always been almond……
link: http://www.mercurynews.com/2016/08/29/bay-area-fireplace-replacement-rebates-snapped-up-in-a-day/
SAN FRANCISCO — Bay Area homeowners took only hours Friday to snap up $3 million in rebates to replace wood burning fireplaces with cleaner heating devices.
The region’s air pollution agency starting taking applications for the rebates at 10 a.m. Friday, and all the money was spoken for by the end of the day as more than 2,000 people applied.
Bay Area homeowners are eligible to seek rebates from $750 to $12,000 per home to replace wood-burning fireplaces and stoves with gas or electric heating devices such as fireplace inserts, heat pumps, or gas stoves.
“We had quite a rush,” said Tom Flannigan, spokesman for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. “This was the first time we have offered this much money for (fireplace) change outs.”
Flannigan said the air quality agency continues to take applications for a waiting list because it’s expected that not all those who signed up for rebates will go through all the required steps to get them. To get on the list, apply online at http://www.baaqmd.gov/WoodSmokeGrant or call 415-749-5195.
Homeowners must submit plans on what will replace their fireplace or stove, wait for the air district to approve the plan, install the new device, and then submit verification that the work was done.
Glenn Stewart, a Livermore resident with a home inspection business, said he is impressed but not surprised by the demand for rebates because gas fireplace inserts are a cleaner, more efficient way to heat homes than old-fashioned fireplaces.
“Some families want the ambiance of burning wood, but most of the heat goes out the chimney,” Stewart said, “and then you then have the work of finding wood to burn and getting rid of the ashes.”
Stewart said he spent about $3,500 four years ago to replace his fireplace with a gas fireplace insert, and he’s been happy with the heat it generates .
He is ineligible for a rebate, which is not offered for fireplace conversions already done.
Air quality officials said the rebates are aimed at reducing public exposure to smoke in winter when cold stagnant air traps pollution near the ground. Tiny soot particles can lodge deep in the lungs and trigger asthma and emphysema attacks, and higher risks of strokes.
