InvaderRamModerator
let’s see if this works. 5:31 in. mcvay responds to follow up question.
InvaderRamModeratorSean McVay on Ernest Jones trade: “Football decision. What we felt was best for the football team. Amazing guy. He was great for us for a few years. But we felt that this was best for our football team.”
i’m watching the interview right. he got a little testy when a reporter tried to follow up on “best for our football team” quote. which i understand. i don’t think i would feel comfortable elaborating on that statement regardless of what the real reasons were. we’ll likely never know the full reasons behind why the rams did what they did.
InvaderRamModeratorNow they have Speights at the primary ILB spot and still have the weakness at the other ILB spot.
is it confirmed that speights is the starter?
if so wow. i mean i still woulda preferred to keep both but wow. this rookie class looks better and better. i’m of course including drafted and undrafted rookies.
InvaderRamModeratorWould they have got a 6th rounder for him anyway? Or something?
yeah. that’s what i want to know. cuz that would piss me off even more.
even if speights is better than jones. then start both or keep one for depth. i want to understand why.
InvaderRamModeratorif jones played out the year and left as a free agent, how much would the compensatory pick be?
or they would have to tender him in order to get a compensatory pick? i don’t remember how that all works.
InvaderRamModeratorif jones played out the year and left as a free agent, how much would the compensatory pick be?
InvaderRamModeratorAm I just colored by bias, or do the Rams give away valuable assets for pocket change?
it makes no sense to me. unless jones was just so unhappy he wanted the trade.
or. speights really impressed them that much. but it doesn’t look like he’s even a starter. i’d rather have kept him than swap fifth and sixth round picks.

InvaderRamModeratorcould you link me to the Rams discussions on reddit? Thanks.
Oh? (via @ernestjones53 on X)
byu/SonOfBuns inLosAngelesRamsInvaderRamModeratorMe (at moi.com): I thought Scott looked good. I liked him better than Evans. Once again, the Rams don’t listen to me. And I ask you–what good has it ever done them to ignore my takes on things? Hmm?
rivers still here though so then one more cut?
InvaderRamModeratorboston scott? whoa. that’s a bit of a surprise no?
InvaderRamModeratorBTW Jones deleted the post saying he didn’t ask to be traded.
i saw that it was deleted. redditverse is speculating the agent demanded a trade without jones’ knowledge. i would hate to see him go. i know his position isn’t as valuable but i like him. i think he contributes in a lot of different ways. i’m no expert so i leave it to the rams to figure out what’s best.
InvaderRamModeratorThere’s a difference between a team making it known to a player that they are open to the possibility of trading him, and that player or his camp specifically asking permission to seek a trade.
so which is it? are the rams actively trying to trade him or is jones’ camp seeking a trade. or we just don’t know at this point?

InvaderRamModeratorAh but, then, also, there’s Bennett….
ya know. mcvay largely inherited a team with talent and just needed to push it over the edge to win that superbowl. now with donald retiring he is largely working with a new set of players. a whole new set of coaches. we’ll see how far he can take them. still too early to tell but promising.
but. the one thing he hasn’t done yet is select and develop his own qb. assuming he and snead can continue to draft successfully, the biggest challenge, if they’re still here, will be to make the transition from stafford to the next qb. of course. that will take an extreme amount of luck as well. but that and another superbowl are probably the biggest things left on mcvay’s resume (snead too).
and again. it’s far from proven that these past two drafts have been a success. but. if he gets that second superbowl, it’ll be most likely due to having successful drafts.
so a second superbowl. and drafting and developing a qb (or maybe even acquiring a young qb and developing him) are the next defining moments in mcvay’s career. i hate to reduce it down to those two things as a way of determining his success. because obviously there’s a lot of other things that go into that, and he won’t necessarily be a failure if he can’t achieve those things. but they’re definitely markers. or benchmarks maybe?
InvaderRamModerator“[Kamren Kinchens] has definitely earned his equity and trust.”

InvaderRamModeratorDraft picks who have all been getting exceptionally good buzz:
Verse
Fiske
Corum
Kinchens
Davis
Karty
Whittington
Limmer
yeah. kinchens too. mcvay specifically called him out. held out of the chargers game for precautionary reasons so not just talk. the rams seriously see him as a significant contributor. maybe even an eventual starter.
InvaderRamModeratorJAKE ELLENBOGEN@JKBOGENOmar Speights is the #1 overall graded defensive player (min. 55 snaps) per PFF. The #Rams have found a bonafide stud again in UDFA. Jake Hummel is #3 among all defensive positionsunbelievable. this rookie class could top last year’s. again. too early to tell. but snead may have done his best work yet. can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
InvaderRamModeratorThe 2 most important assistant coaches on the team right now appear to be Shula at DC and Wendell as OL coach.
yeah. they certainly are the two most important coaches. how those two perform their duties will be critical to how this team does this year.
InvaderRamModeratorMike LaFleur made it sound like the Rams might rest Whittington this week but he ended up playing and playing well again. The rookie receiver caught five passes for 52 yards in the first half alone, including a 24-yarder over the middle on third-and-3. All he does is make plays and he’s seemingly carving out a role for himself in the receiving corps.
it’s probably best that he get as many reps as possible anyway. ideally he will be playing a much less prominent role in the regular season.
plus you figure you gotta give bennett valuable reps to see if he is a viable backup option.
InvaderRamModeratorBut basically, it’s designing an offensive system where the defense has trouble telling plays apart before the snap and the routes are designed to be mutually supporting in ways that always gets a guy open.
still want to see how whittington does this season, but i wonder if mcvay’s offense is able to maximize the receivers’ abilities. i’m sure other coaches try to do these same things, but maybe that’s mcvay’s strength as opposed to say a guy who can develop qbs. so maybe it’s better for the rams to concentrate on keeping stafford and keeping the oline solid than devoting a lot of money to receivers? i don’t know. just wondering out loud.
kupp. then seemingly nacua. and now possibly whittington?
i guess my question is. on the offensive side is it better to spend resources on qb and oline and maybe spend less on rbs and wrs?
InvaderRamModeratori haven’t seen whittington play yet but i’m excited. another wr willing to do the dirty work. this draft class so far is looking like another hit. is it possible?
InvaderRamModeratorI sometimes think is less adept situationally, meaning he’s not always tactically adept at play calling in specific situations. For example, in spite of all their fire power, the Rams have only been top 10 in this stat–NFL Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage (TD only)–only 2 seasons out of 7 since McV took over (2019 and 2023).
is this something that can be improved upon? you figure the more situations he sees as a play caller the more he can hone that decision making? or is it just feel? i don’t know.
he’s still so young. it’s crazy. i don’t think he’s even close to realizing his potential.
InvaderRamModeratorSo in fact McV didn’t develop Goff, and it’s not clear he has ever developed a young qb.
yeah. not sure he’s a “qb whisperer” or whatever you want to call it. like an andy reid.
what are his strengths? he seems to be able to hire the right guys. he is a leader like no one the rams have seen since vermeil himself. just the respect i hear come from players’ mouths. like aaron donald.
like a combination of dick vermeil and i don’t know. what are his strengths as an offensive coach?
InvaderRamModeratoraaron donald. much more valuable. especially in today’s game. i’d take him over any other position other than qb.
InvaderRamModeratorMina Kimes. She’s Seattle’s version of Jourdan Rodrigue. Really does her homework. ENJOYS doing her homework. Two of the best ‘ever’ imho. w v
she really is. very knowledgeable.
InvaderRamModeratorInvaderRamModeratorIt actually appears that what they’re doing a lot is playing (from defensive right to defensive left): 3-tech DT: Fiske NT: Turner DE: Johnson with Brown rotating in at NT. That’s an undersized DL that is aggressive and quick against the pass.
rodrigue mentioned that she particularly liked seeing fiske and turner play next to each other so it doesn’t surprise me.
i take that as a good sign that johnson is playing well.
InvaderRamModeratorMicah Parsons who? 😤😤😤 @JaredVerse1 pic.twitter.com/yAfAXSxY5j

InvaderRamModeratorstarts at 13:33. they talk about verse then mention curl as well.
InvaderRamModeratorSo will it be * Turner/Fiske * Brown * [someone at DE ie. a 5-tech…but who] * Or is the base 3/4 DL going to be 2 3-techs + a nose? so * Fiske * Brown * Turner * ?
that is a question for someone with more football knowledge than me.
