Well, I filled mine out, but apparently didn’t hit save. 🙁
DakParticipantAnd, to think, my daughter predicted the Rams would win, and I just flat out told her, that’s nice, but no, the Broncos will win.
DakParticipantI’ll have to say that I was disappointed that the Rams stuck with Davis another week, and last week just solidified that he cannot be a week-to-week starter in this league. You could see that he couldn’t process information quickly, could not beat blitzes, could not look downfield while under pressure, could not make strong throws downfield unless kept clean … just could not play QB effectively in this league.
So, yeah, I think RFL’s criticism of Fisher is justified. I was upset, too. I think that Fisher wanted to see if Austin Davis could improve, and he stuck with him too long after making the declaration that Davis was the starter the rest of the year. I think he made that declaration only so Davis wouldn’t look over his shoulder. And, I’m fine with that. But, Davis knows he wasn’t playing well, and any QB not playing well knows he is in jeopardy of being replaced. Fisher should have replaced Davis, and he should have done it earlier.
DakParticipantI quit a few weeks ago when I couldn’t submit my picks. Maybe I’ll start up just for fun.
DakParticipantYeah, I figured that by the time the Rams got to the NFC West games, the book would be out on on Austin Davis, and he’d have some tough sledding. I was begging for Hill in this game, but it would be best to get him prepared to start a game.
DakParticipantIt seemed to me that the D-line had more time to get to the QB in this game. Kaepernick held the ball longer than other QBs who faced the Rams this season. So, to me, the entire defense must have played better, from the young secondary to the LBs to the D-line. E.J. Gaines some really good pass defenses, too. The run defense also set up the pass D. San Francisco could not just shove the ball down the Rams’ throats, so they had to pass to win.
I just thought it was a great defensive team win.
DakParticipantI don’t know what’s going on in this defense. Brockers was hurt early in the season. Maybe he’s nursing a leg injury. I don’t know. But, I haven’t noticed him doing much on any down. My guess is that on third downs, Donald is getting most of the snaps because he has a better chance of getting to the passer.
DakParticipantSeems to me to be a Gregg Williams move. This defense is getting absolutely zero pressure on blitzes. I wonder if they foresee using three safeties at times, with the threat of Barron or McDonald blitzing.
I’m OK with the move. This secondary needs some veterans. We’ve got lots of younger guys with potential, but it looks like Barron has shown he can play in this league.
DakParticipantI wasn’t too excited about relying on Long at LT this year, but I figured at least they have depth. But, man, if Saffold doesn’t keep getting injured. That may be the real death knell. If Saffold continues to suffer, with Wells out, with Long long gone … man, you’ve got to be kidding me. Austin Davis is not going to have a chance. I was just talking about how at least this team was watchable. I said that after the first TD on Sunday. I fear I’ll have to eat those words.
DakParticipantYeah, I keep waiting for the tide to turn. This is always going to be the year.
Sigh.
There’s no guarantee that this group of players will ever get over the hump.
DakParticipantWell, GZ has regressed, no question. I was calling for his head, too. Maybe his illness explains his performance.
DakParticipantThat first drive was nice. Really nice.
Then … hmm. I can’t think of much.
I did not expect a win, but then they came out in that first quarter and gave me hope. False hope, of course.
This team has building blocks. But, they still don’t know how to win.
DakParticipantLooks like Zooey gave you a really good course of action … and so did Nittany. 🙂
I’ll just say that I would never consider going to the administration the “nuclear option.” Put yourself in administration’s shoes. They can’t do anything with the teacher if they don’t know there is an issue.

Jacksonville Jaguars: 1995I just think that some of the Rams’ DTs have been playing hurt, Long being out, and Quinn not being dominant = a mediocre pass rush. The blitz should have made up for some of that, but I haven’t seen a blitz package work this season, which is just amazing. So, Gregg Williams is a nonfactor, as well.
(I also think the 1 sack thing is a little misleading … I think we’ve had at least two sacks nullified on horrible calls.)

he Rams have the #1 defense in football against the pass.I think that’s misleading.
They’re 1st in passing attempts against, meaning, they are thrown on the least of all 32 teams.
But they are 26th in yards per attempt passing on defense.
Which means if anyone DOES start throwing on them, they will give up lots of yards.
They are throwing less to avoid taking sacks, when they do throw it’s short getting the
ball out quick.I think that theory has merit. Teams are doing what they need to do to avoid pressure on their QBs. If this D can control the run and get a lead, we’ll see what this pass D can really do.
DakParticipantAh, this is why NFL Network sucks most of the time. They can’t have real “reports” from their personalities. Just stupid banter.
DakParticipantRarely is there such a wide disparity in penalty yards between two teams in one game. In fact, there’s never been as big a disparity in either direction since the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995.
Well, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t watching the blocking closely in this game, so I just assumed that the Cowboys’ offensive line is one of the best in the game.
You would think that the Rams would have said something to the referees during the game. Usually, when there’s that much holding, you eventually see the calls being made. Maybe it’s as easy as the refs had money on the game. You know?
DakParticipantI expected breakdowns in the secondary this year, and that’s what’s happening. They’re still young back there, and frankly not that talented. They’re a couple upgrades in the secondary from becoming an elite defense against the pass.
I’m no X’s and O’s guy, but I could see that the Rams didn’t fill in holes on cutback runs. Some guys seem to get out of position every play or so, allowing a big run. I do think the Rams will improve their defense. But, I share RFL’s frustration about why this defense is so poor at times early in the season. I’m seeing a trend with Fisher’s Rams.
DakParticipantI think Cook is going to have a very productive year because the Rams actually have some options at wide receiver. I also think that Givens will get a lot less time on the field when Tavon returns. I like Austin Davis, but he didn’t get pressured much, and when he did, he made some mistakes, including the pick-6. This was not a good defense the Rams played.
September 23, 2014 at 6:06 pm in reply to: A QB controversy and a Tight-End controversy: game reactions #8320DakParticipantMy postmortem: The Rams made mistakes on both offense and defense that let Dallas back into that game. I think the only guy who had a perfect game was Zac Stacy. He was impressive running, receiving and blocking. Austin Davis was very good at times, and also hurt the team with those INTs.
DakParticipantAlso back after a crazy weekend that caused my own hiatus.
I forgive Cook for the stupid display on the sideline … although it reinforces my feeling that he’s an airhead and immature.
I also forgive him for dropping a sure TD … I got my frustration out during an intermittent hour-long rant Sunday.
DakParticipantHarkey’s injury hurts the running game.
I do not have a good feeling about this game, at all.
September 18, 2014 at 6:44 am in reply to: Rams notebook: McDonald's big game falls short of NFC recognition/PD #7758DakParticipantMcDonald’s blocks came on similar-looking plays. From the left side, he cut inside the last Tampa Bay blocker to make the plays — with a little help from defensive end William Hayes.
“It’s something we work on in practice. It’s just a matter of getting an opportunity and taking advantage,’’ McDonald said. “On the first one, I got there easier than I expected, so I told Will that if you can grab that guy’s arm, I’d be able to get in there again.
“He grabbed it and I was able to get through the gap.’’
Is that a legal play? I don’t think I’d be sharing your tricks so readily.
DakParticipantAs Pettis came down with the ball, however, Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson came over and delivered a crushing blow only to see Pettis find a way to hang on to the ball.
“At that point in the game you want to make a big play and I kind of thrive in those kind of situations,” Pettis said. “I came off the line and kind of had a feeling the ball was going to come to me on that play so I knew I had to come down with it no matter what.”
I love that attitude. I think the Rams have to find more opportunities for Pettis. This may lead to less Givens or Britt, I don’t know, but Pettis expects to come down with the ball. Maybe Quick should be watching Pettis and learning more from him. Because if Quick could come down with just a few more clutch plays (like the ball that hit him in the helmet), he’d be All-Pro.
I do wonder what happens when Bailey comes back. There really are a host of pretty good WRs on this team now, but no great ones.
DakParticipantYeah, I’d still go with Hill when he comes back. I’m just glad that Austin Davis had a good game in his first start. He helped score some points, but he didn’t set the world on fire and prove that he must be the starter now. I still like Hill over him at this point.

DakParticipantGame balls to Austin Davis, McDonald, Austin Pettis and Greg the Leg Legatron.
DakParticipantYeah, there’s a place for Austin Pettis on this team. I wonder, sometimes, if he’s underutilized. He was also a big factor in the win against the Saints at home last year. You can use who guy who just makes clutch catches, right?
DakParticipantTake away the horse collar tackle by Sims (which was a terrible penalty, because they had the RB stopped) and that roughing the passer call (a terrible call … the QB hit his head on his own O-lineman’s backside), and that takes away drives that accounted for 10 of Tampa’s points. OTOH, the D just didn’t do well against the run again, and hasn’t made many impact plays. I was also very disappointed in giving Tampa a chance to win with that long pass down the middle of the field. Maybe Tampa couldn’t clock the ball in time if not for the Evans “injury” 10-second run-off, but how do you let a guy get that wide open with so many guys dropped back into the secondary?
I expect the defense to get better. They have to, or else we’re looking at a team clawing to beat other bad teams, and hoping to stay in games against good teams.
As for McDonald, he was player of the game just with his special teams work. He certainly looks like a real player at safety, too.
DakParticipantI understand what you mean. But, I think he would be useful right now, and was useful in that game, on the end-around and the catch where he got hurt. On the end-around, he made a great move in stride that picked up several more yards. They don’t have anyone else who can do that. For that reason, he can break a punt at any given time, and nobody else on the team can do that, either. His worth is in explosive plays. He has as good a chance of getting open — wide open — deep as anyone on the team.
So, yeah, the Rams could play a solid offensive game without him. But, having him on the sidelines severely limits the chances of an explosive play.
DakParticipantHill didn’t lose his job due to performance, and it’s not like Austin Davis was Kurt Warner. I’m with Fisher on this one.
