Wes Welker’s next job may be as a coach

Wes Welker’s career as an NFL receiver appears to be over. So with no teams taking a chance on the 35-year-old free agent, he’s testing his hand at coaching.

Welker visited the Dolphins on Monday as an advisor and served as a guest coach with the Ravens on Thursday and Friday after John Harbaugh reached out.

“It was an opportunity for him to get his feet wet,” Harbaugh said. “He obviously brings a lot to the table and can help our guys. He has a lot of insight with all his success and his style.”

A five-time Pro Bowl selection after going undrafted out of Texas Tech, Welker dealt with concussion issues in recent seasons that forced him to face retirement questions.

“That’s kind of the million-dollar question right now,” Welker told NFL Network in May. “I’m trying to figure that out. I think I’m weighing my options and really trying to figure out where to go with life next. But there are some days I wake up, I’m like, ‘OK, I’m done.’ And other days I wake up and I go, ‘Maybe one more year.’

“But I’m trying not to rush into any decision but at the same time know that I’m preparing myself for not playing.”

In 12 seasons Welker has 903 receptions for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns. He’s said playing football is the only job he’s ever had, and it’s sad to think head injuries might force him off the field. But a spot on the sidelines as a coach may suit him just fine.

I like to keep up with ex-Rams, to an extent anyway, and for a short while anyway, even if they were short-lived Rams.

Welker’s Rams career was as brief as those can get. He ranks with Lloyd as one of the recent Rams short-lived “Merc” receivers. Another is Marc Clayton.
