Rams Head Coach Sean McVay, Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips, RB Todd Gurley II – – Dec. 18, 2019

    ***
    Rams Head Coach Sean McVay

(On if there are any updates on CB Troy Hill)
“We’re just day-to-day, we’re going to take it day-to-day with him (CB Troy Hill). We will do that up until later on this week – pain tolerance, just to kind of see how he’s feeling. The good thing is, if it is something where we are going to decide to let him rest and not play, then you do feel good about (CB) Darious Williams stepping up.”

(On what his optimism level is on TE Gerald Everett)

“I think, again, we’re just kind of feeling it out. We will see how today goes, and then, I will be able to have a better idea once we actually get a physical practice in and see what that looks like. Part of that too, is as we complete the gameplan and kind of figure out exactly what that looks like and what his (TE Gerald Everett) involvement would be, if he is feeling good enough.”

    (On K Greg Zuerlein)
“Again, it’s one of those things that, because we haven’t physically gone yet, we’re going to wait until tomorrow. We’re going to wait as long as we can until we actually kick him (K Greg Zuerlein), let him use all this time that he does have to try to get as healthy as possible, and then we’ll get a feel Thursday or Friday on how he’s feeling, if he’s going to be able to kick, if not, then we’ll have that alternative plan.”

(On if there is any type of movement on the alternative plan if Zuerlein can’t play against the 49ers)
“We’ve got some guys coming in. I’m so used to today being Thursday, today is actually Wednesday, but in a normal week, this is like our Thursday. On Thursday of this week – which would be equivalent to a Friday on a game week – we’ll have some guys that we could bring in and work out, if that something where Greg isn’t able to go.”

    (On T Rob Havenstein’s progress)
    “Making good progress.”

(On if Havenstein will play against the 49ers)
“I don’t know yet. It was good to get him (T Rob Havenstein) back out on the field. Again, I know I’m kind of answering the same questions, but until we really physically go, it’s hard for me to truly give you guys a real answer to some of these questions, and I’ll have a much better feel based on how today’s practice – where we will get some good physical work in – goes for those players.”

(On when his focus is on the offensive side of the ball what’s he makes of the defense’s up and down season)
“My focus is on this team. There’s a lot of time that you spend, and you want to make sure that you have rapport relationships and an understanding of everything that’s going on. I think that’s part of the role. It’s hard to explain. There’s been some instances where you do give the offense it’s credit, but we’ve played so well, and I do think that’s more what we are and we’ve got to consistently do that. I think a lot of the things last week, really, just boiled down to just some of the fundamentals, the techniques that our guys are more than capable of executing at a high level, because we’ve seen that. You do give Dallas some credit. Then, I think when you look at the other outlier performance, with the Baltimore game, I think it was a combination of, I think we certainly could have helped in some instances of putting our guys in some good spots. It was an impressive operation, and kind of caught them when we were really rolling. Those are outliers. You want to be consistent week in and week out, but I am confident that we are a very good defense.”

(On Week 15 missed tackles and if that is alarming to see as a coach)
“I think it’s difficult because as you start to get later on in the season, you’re limited in your opportunities that you can physically compete. Those things can kind of come into play. I know our guys do a great job of emphasizing that every single day. It just boils down to the small margin for error on when you do miss those tackles and then what it leads to. Then they were able to consistently kind of just have efficient runs, kind of be ahead of the sticks. And then there were some instances where guys – you end up having one of our better players who’s had a great season, misses a tackle when he’s unblocked, they avoid it and then we end up having two guys rub right into each other and that ends up leading to a long touchdown. You got to look at each play as its own entity, like I’ve said over and over, but I am confident that our guys are wired the right way to respond. I trust in this group, I believe in these players and I think we know we’ve got a great challenge against the Niners but, I think we’ll have a better showing this week.”

(On what he’s liked about CB Darious Williams performance this season)
“I think last week, you get a large sample size to really evaluate him. It’s not too big, he understands the techniques, the fundamentals that we want to be able to operate with. He understands the coverage concepts and where he fits based on how certain route combinations play out. He’s a guy that even going back to last year – I can think of a handful of times when we’ve got great receivers and he’s given those guys outstanding looks and really challenging them and competing, really caught my eye last year. Then as he’s gotten more comfortable with the system, had a year to really digest what we’re trying to get done, you’re starting to see that translate when he gets his opportunities. He’s a good football player.”

(On having two Pro Bowlers which is a drop off from the last couple of years and if that is a reflection of the team and individual performances)
“I would say this, I think we’ve got a lot of really good football players. I think that it’s great to be able to see (DT) Aaron (Donald) and (CB) Jalen (Ramsey) get recognized by their peers and how you end up kind of getting voted in to the Pro Bowl. There’s a lot of guys that we believe in as coaches – we know what they’re capable of. Sometimes it is a reflection of, like what you said, the team’s success. When you end up having more success as a team usually that leads to a lot of people getting the appropriate credit that they deserve and that’s what the last couple of years have entailed. But, I certainly still think we’ve got a really good roster, really good players, and a lot of guys that could certainly make a case to be in that conversation. But, it’s always about the team.”

(On if you are comfortable when looking at staffing, particularly the offense)
“I feel good about it. I feel very fortunate to work with the group that we do have. But, you are always evaluating. The one thing, for myself in this role, is that you’re constantly evaluating all the elements that this role entails, and you always want to continue to do it at a high level. The way that you do get better, is yousurround yourself with people that are better than you. We’ve got a lot of good people here, but I think it’s always continuing to find that good balance of, what does it look like structurally, really, for our organization, in terms of that set up, want to be able to get the best people here. I think you are always looking at those things, but I feel really good about what our group has done, if you are asking about that.”

(On if you can imagine not being the playcaller for a team you are coaching)
“It’s hard to say. I think you’re early on in the stages of it. Certainly, I’m continuing to try and figure out what’s the best rhythm to operate with on a day-to-day basis for our football team, because ultimately that is your job, is to make sure that you have a good feel for everything that is going on and then putting your players in a position on all three phases to try to have success week in and week out. If I felt like there was a set-up where we would be a better football team, if that wasn’t the case and it enables you to do some other things, I would never say never, but those are always things that you evaluate. Right now, our focus is on the (San Francisco) 49ers, doing a great job. When the offseason hits, whenever that is, there will be some time for us to be able to really look inward and figure out what’s going to be the best thing for the Rams moving forward.”

(On RB Todd Gurley II being named a Pro Bowl alternative this season)
“Yeah, I think it says that his body of work over the course for his career has earned the respect that’s merited. There have been some different reasons why the production is what it is, and a large part, not exclusive to what he can control. So, I think he has got respect around this league, I think that’s been earned and been merited by his body of work and I think we have all seen that.”

(On if you are surprised at where the Rams right now this year, since you took over as head coach)
“If you said, ‘This is where we would be at,’ I don’t think anybody would be satisfied or think that’s how it would go, but this is where we are at. I think in a lot of instances, this would give you a perspective. Certainly, some of these you kind of have to embrace the adversities that we faced, and it forces you to go one of two ways – you either fold or you continue to fight, and you get stronger as a result of pushing through. We have said it over and over, this is a really competitive league it’s very tough to win week in and week out, injuries play the part. We make no excuses. We are what we are right now, and we are going to continue to battle and try to finish this thing out the right way, however it ends up. But, to say you are surprised, I think that would probably be accurate, but this is where we’re at and we are going to keep battling and fighting. I think we will all be better for this and I’m very appreciative and thankful for some of the adversities that we faced because you really get a chance to learn about people and find out why a lot of the things you felt so good about, whether it be with your coaches or with your players, are accurate because it’s easy when everything is going really well and easy to lead from the front and there’s really no real adversity, but you find out about people when you do go through some of these things. That’s been a blessing.”

    Rams Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips

    (Opening Remarks)
“Obviously, the 49ers have a really strong offense. But, we’re getting prepared, we’re getting ready to win this game. We’re looking forward to it. We’re unhappy with how we played last game, but that one’s over. We’re going to the next one and the next one, we’ve got to play better. That’s our mindset.”

(On the cause for the defense lacking consistency this season)
“We’ve been inconsistent overall. We’ve had a couple clunkers and if I knew the reason, we wouldn’t do it. But, we have fought back every time. I think the attitude of our team – our defense and our whole group – we’re fighters and we’re going to fight back.”

(On if there is a specific explanation for the lack of consistency)
“Like I said, if I knew, I’d change it – or I’d change something going into it. We practiced well, we thought we were going to play well, and we didn’t. We thought we were going to coach well, and we didn’t. I’ve been in it a long time. We’ve won nine games and been in the playoffs, we won 10 games and been in the playoffs. The playoff thing isn’t the important thing is going out there and trying to win every game. That’s what we’re going to try to do. Those things will happen for you, or they won’t – whether you deserve it or not, I don’t know. We won nine (games) in Atlanta and went into Green Bay and beat them – the first time they ever lost in the playoffs. It’s a fight every game. We’re in a tough, tough division. Two teams really stepped up in our division this year and we’ve got a chance to beat one of them that we lost to the first time.”

(On how the addition of WR Emmanuel Sanders improves San Francisco’s offense)
“I’m very familiar with (49ers WR) Emmanuel Sanders. He’s obviously a really good receiver. His know-how, he’s savvy, he recognizes coverages real well, he knows where the weaknesses are, he knows where to run to, he’s tremendous on bump-and-run throws, over the outside shoulder and then throw-behind passes – he’s adept at most things. He helped me get a (Super Bowl) ring, so I’m a fan of his as far as that’s concerned, but not this week.”

(On the challenges that come with covering Sanders and 49ers TE George Kittle)
“(49ers TE George) Kittle we know – he caught 13 passes last week and he’s a top-flight tight end. It always helps your offense to have a guy like that, that can get open from the inside.”

(On what the defense can improve after Week 15’s game against Dallas)
“Again, I don’t want to really go back to Dallas. But, we need to play the run better. Their three wide receivers caught one pass each. Especially against the second running back (Cowboys RB Tony Pollard) – he’s the guy that made the big plays for them. You knew (Cowboys RB) Ezekiel Elliott was going to make some plays. If you give it to him enough, he’s going to make 100 yards. The other guy (Pollard) made more yards than he did and didn’t run it very much. And, we missed too many tackles. Like I said, that one’s gone – we’ve got to go to the next one.”

(On if that is a concern going against the 49ers, who run the ball)
“Yeah, they run the ball well too. But, Seattle ran the ball well that we beat before that. We’ve got to meet the challenge.”

(On where LB Cory Littleton ranks in terms of inside linebackers he has coached recently and if he thinks he gets the respect he deserves and people being surprised he was not chosen for the Pro Bowl)
“(LB) Cory (Littleton) certainly makes the plays to be deserving of accolades, certainly. He’s the leading tackler on our team, and has been, and has over 100-and-something tackles every year. The other thing he does is he covers well, he gets interceptions, he causes fumbles. I’m not sure what they’re looking for, overall. Not to say the guys that made it in front of him aren’t really good players, too. Sometimes you get caught in that situation.”

(On if he has any sense whether CB Troy Hill will play or not and what he thinks of CB Darious Williams taking his place)
“If he (CB Troy Hill) doesn’t play, (CB) Darious (Williams) will play, yes. I don’t think we know yet. We haven’t made a determination yet. We’ve still got some more practices to go to see where we are.”

(On what Williams brings to the cornerback position)
“I thought Darious played, actually, pretty well. He had one ‘PI’ (Pass Interference) penalty that I can’t say anything about. He made an interception that didn’t count. Like I said, (Cowboys WR Michael) Gallup, he played him most of the game and he had one catch for 6 yards. I thought he did a pretty good job.”

(On him having DT Aaron Donald and CB Jalen Ramsey chosen for the Pro Bowl and if that is a fair reflection of how well his defense is playing and who is playing well)
“I mean, clearly in exception to Cory, certainly. Those two guys (DT Aaron Donald and CB Jalen Ramsey) are dominant players and deserve it. Both of them are great players and they play great during the games. Especially for (CB) Jalen (Ramsey) who came from the other conference and played half the year. People still recognize what kind of player he is and what he can do and what he has done for us. The more games you win, the more players that are on them and the Pro Bowl. We had more last year, obviously, but we hadn’t won as many games this year. Deserve it or not deserve it is close depending on how many games you win usually.”

(On if it was different as head coach not having a defensive coordinator under him)
“I thought it was the right thing to do at the time, is the reason I did it. I’m not sure what the question is.”

(On the defense not having a coordinator or somebody else there other than him as head coach)
“You’re involved in your side of the ball, no matter what. When I was with Charlie (Waters) and Ted (Cottrell) and those guys, we set the gameplan together, that kind of thing. You’re more involved in your side of the ball has been my experience where I was.”

    ***

    RB Todd Gurley II

(On how he feels going into Saturday’s game against the 49ers after not playing them in Week 6 and what he’s seen from their team)
“Good team. Those guys have been pretty much banged up all year, but they are just a good team right now and they’ve been finding ways to win. They’ve been doing a pretty good job. Even though things haven’t been going their way the last couple of weeks, they’ve put themselves in a good enough position to be able to lose however many games. They’ve lost these last couple, they’re doing a pretty good job though.”

(On if he will put the Dallas game last week behind him moving forward to the 49ers)
“Yeah, that’s just part of the league. It won’t be the first time we get beat like that, it won’t be the last. It’s just part of the rollercoaster going through the league – just next week.”

(On how he evaluates how he’s played this season compared to seasons prior)
“I don’t ever really compare myself to no one nor previous seasons. Every year is different, every year is a different experience. Every year is a different team. Obviously, we haven’t done what we wanted to do – I’m not even just talking about me, just talking about overall team. Still two games left. I think just focus on each week, don’t focus on what I’ve could have done, or how many yards I could have had or how many touchdowns. Just try to worry about the bigger picture, get a win. Like I told you, whether it’s 10 yards or 100 yards, it doesn’t matter as long as we get the win. That’s kind of all that matters.”

(On making the Pro Bowl as an alternate and if he gets validation from that considering players and coaches participated in the voting)
“Yeah, that’s just more of the respect that I get from other players around the league – you know that they have for me. That definitely means a lot, just coming from your peers and coaches. It just shows the amount of respect that I have for other guys around the league and the amount of respect they have for me as well.”

(On watching the film from the first time they played the 49ers this season and what he took away from that game that they could have done differently)
“I don’t even know. That was like Week 4 so I couldn’t even tell you. I haven’t even played against the 49ers – I feel like I always miss them like once a year, even my rookie year I didn’t play against them. It’s always a good feeling. I feel like when I do play against them I usually do fairly well. Triple hitter Saturday, so looking forward to it.”

(On hoping to play in the Pro Bowl and if he would accept the opportunity to play as an alternate)
“I don’t know. Usually when I made it, I just made it. I don’t know how that works. I don’t really care either.”

(On if he hopes to play in the game at the Pro Bowl)
“No, I hope those guys that made it go play in the game – (Carolina Panthers RB) Christian McCaffrey, (Minnesota Vikings RB) Dalvin Cook, (Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott) ‘Zeke,’ (Cleveland Browns RB) Nick Chubb, (Baltimore Ravens RB) Mark (Ingram), and (Tennessee Titans RB) Derrick Henry. All of those guys had a hell of a year, always been great players and been great running backs. I think a couple of those guys, it’s their first time. Definitely I would want those guys to go and experience that with their families and their friends and enjoy it.”

(On remembering the Rams’ first drive of the last 49ers game where RB Malcolm Brown ran the ball five times)
“Yeah, it was a bunch of runs in a row. It was a pretty good drive and they kind of made some adjustments the second drive. Then the rest of the game wasn’t really fairly that great. It’s a divisional game, anything can happen. They’re familiar with us, we’re familiar with them. Divisional games can always go either way.”

Rams Head Coach Sean McVay, Run Game Coordinator Aaron Kromer, QB Jared Goff – – Dec. 17, 2019

    ***

    Rams Head Coach Sean McVay

    (Opening Remarks)
“Injury-wise, we haven’t practiced yet today. We’ll be all walk-thru and handle that the right way. (CB) Troy Hill, if we did have a normal practice, would not have been a participant. Same thing with (K) Greg Zuerlein. (QB) Jared (Goff’s) thumb’s feeling real good and (TE Gerald) Everett would’ve been limited.”

(On if Goff would have been a full participant if the team had a regular practice on Tuesday)
“He would be. He’s feeling good, checked off and he’s ready to go.”

(On if he anticipates Goff having to wear anything to support or protect his thumb)
“He had a nice little compression sleeve on that looked kind of goofy today, but I think he should be in good shape (laughs).”

(On how the team manages the kicking situation if Zuerlein cannot play on Saturday)
“We’ll have some guys that have recently – we’ve got a couple names. ‘Bones’ (Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel) was on top of that right away when the situation came up. If we do feel like it’s going to be something that we anticipate, ‘Maybe he can go, maybe he can’t’, we might end up keeping somebody that’s close by overnight. Or, we might end up having to sign somebody later on in the week if we make the determination that he isn’t able to go. That’s not what we expect, but we will have some guys coming in here on Thursday night.”

(On if the team tells free agent kickers to stay active in anticipation of potentially being signed)
“Yeah, I think those guys that are those ‘street free agents’ that have most recently been with teams, I think they kind of know what the gig is. You never know when your number’s going to be called. For us a couple years ago, (K) Sam Ficken, who’s doing a nice job with the Jets, ended up filling in. There’s been some guys that have been recently on teams that have kicked in games that you feel like there’s enough guys that, if you had to, you could do it. Then, we can always just go for two (point conversions) every time. We had a similar situation a couple years ago. You can change up a lot of your tendencies on third down, too. You never know.”

(On if he thinks Goff’s thumb injury impacted his play in Week 15 against Dallas)
“I think he’d be better equipped to answer that. I think there were some things that – we’ve all got to play better. When that occurred, I think there’s some things that – he definitely will be better moving forward, we expect him to be and I know he expects that of himself. I can’t speak for him. I do know that any time that you do have an injury to your hand – in terms of how you’re delivering the football, how you’re gripping it, things like that – it is difficult and it changes a lot of things. But, he would be better equipped to answer that than I could.”

(On if Goff will be able to take snaps from underneath the center on Saturday)
“He’ll be able to do that. He’ll be able to do everything. There’s not going to be any limitations. Fortunately, it’s like one of those deals where you get it banged and it’s like anything else – probably scares you more than anything at first because it is such an irritating thing when you’re trying to grip the ball. But, he’s feeling good and fortunately, there wasn’t really anything other than just kind of hitting it on the helmet and a little bruise, I think.”

(On what happened in the previous game against San Francisco that allowed Goff to only pass for 78 yards)
“They did a great job. They’re a great defense, they’re one of the top defenses in the league and they’ve got one of the better pass-defenses. Arguably, you just look at the numbers, they’re up there in league history. They’ve done a great job. I think there’s some things that we’ve got to do a better job of. We were able to get some runs off in that first drive, but all-in-all, when you look at it, they did a great job getting after us. There weren’t really many positives other than those first seven plays on that first drive. (RB) Darrell (Henderson Jr.) had a couple big runs, but when you get stopped, when you’re on the 6-inch yard line. and when you fumble the opening play coming out of the second half, it’s tough to beat an excellent football team like this. Hopefully, we’ll have a better showing, but we certainly know what a great challenge it will be, because of what a great job (49ers Defensive Coordinator) Robert Saleh does leading the way, and then all the great players that they have executing the scheme.”

(On having RB Todd Gurley II for Saturday’s game after he missed the first meeting between the two teams and what he expects from Gurley II)
“I think just playing like what we expect him (RB Todd Gurley II) to. Whenever his number is called, doing a good job of just being efficient, seeing things the right way, leveling things off, being able to create some stuff on his own, if that’s what the look dictates, and being sound in protection. Just playing his position the right way snap in and snap out.”

(On what role leaders on the field play in setting the tone for the game whether it’s encouraging teammates or chewing out the team in a huddle and if he is satisfied that that is happening)
“Yeah, I trust our leadership. I think there’s a lot of things that go on in the absence of coaches, in terms of the dialogue and the communication. When you have your players that have some ownership, that’s always the most ideal situation, because they’re the ones out there. I do believe that we’ve got a handful of guys that represent exactly what you want it to look like in terms of the command, the ownership that they have. But I think in a lot of instances, too, it’s maintaining an even-keel, being poised. Then in a lot of instances, it’s as simple as somebody making a play to kind of get that momentum back in our favor. You don’t want to get down, you want to have guys, but a lot of that dialogue that exists between the players, I think that’s special when it exists between those guys. Certainly, some of the things that help get out of a rut are when somebody creates something, or makes a big time play to try to shift that narrative and change the momentum in our favor. Those are some things that you look for in those instances.”

(On Goff being in the position to motivate the team to get the game back going in favor of the Rams and it is hard to imagine someone as even-keel as Goff to play that role)
“Here’s what I would say – you say that, I think that’s a good thing. I think, No. 1, you’ve got to be yourself, because I think that resonates with your teammates and the people you work with more than anything else. I have gotten some good glimpses that I wouldn’t have known otherwise when he’s been mic’d up in the huddle, because there’s only so much that you see, but when there’s a communication that goes on and the dialogue in the huddle – the command, the ability to kind of reach and connect with guys. I think there’s some pretty impressive things that are true to his personality that get what the intent is of kind of what you’re asking done. I think as long as it’s authentic and true to your personality, with some urgency and with a demanding approach that’s solution-oriented like we talk about, I think guys respond to that. You’ve got to be yourself and there’s different personalities that I think get the same response as long as it’s real and authentic.”

(On 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan saying Goff is really good when the team is on and how it’s imperative for the 49ers defense to put pressure on him and make him do things himself and if that’s a criticism in any way or if it applies to every quarterback)
“I think that’s like anything else, the more that you can try to get guys off their spot, apply pressure, move them, force the ball to come out of their hand quicker than maybe what they want. That’s a consistent thing to try to apply pressure and make quarterbacks uncomfortable early in games. I know (49ers Head Coach) Kyle (Shanahan) has a lot of respect for Jared and what he’s done in this league. I haven’t seen the quote, but I’m sure the way that he meant it was that like anything, you’ve got a great quarterback like (49ers QB Jimmy) Garoppolo, like Jared, like these other guys – the way that you can try to minimize how well they play, or minimize their impact on the game is to make them uncomfortable by getting in and applying pressure to them and limiting the time that routes have to develop and some of the concepts that they’re running.”

(On there being quarterbacks that have been able to overcome being uncomfortable with pressure)
“I would say this, there is different ways of being able to create off-schedule. I think you look at the way that (Patriots QB) Tom Brady has consistently done a great job creating off-schedule by his ability to move and manipulate within the framework of the pocket, might be a little bit different than some of these other guys, whether it’s (Kansas City QB Patrick) Mahomes or (Packers QB Aaron) Rodgers. I think it’s all about, ‘All right, what is their skillset? How do they maximize their skillset when things do break down?’ Certain guys have the ability to extend plays outside the pocket. But, then there’s also an element of extending the play in the pocket by feeling, negotiating a rush, or having a great feel for where your quick-element throws are. All the great quarterbacks usually have a feel for that, whether you’re a guy that’s kind of breaking contain and running around. Those are things that I think you see consistent is having an awareness of where everybody’s at, knowing where your quick-element throws are when things condense in the pocket and just having a natural feel while keeping your eyes down the field.”

(On what he tells the team to stay motivated)
“Attack the day. I think we’ve got a lot of guys that love football – I love football, our coaches do. Really, you cherish these opportunities to go compete. You’re only guaranteed 16 of them, we’ve got two left for sure. No matter how this thing shakes out, I think what we’ve talked about is you’re not going to have any regrets as long as you go for it. You go compete to the best of your ability and I trust that’s what we’re going to do. At least, you’re saying, maybe you give yourself a chance, but even if we (didn’t) even had a chance of continuing to play afterwards, we’ve got an opportunity to go get our ninth win. Like I said the other day, there’s a lot of prideful guys. When you love what you do and you love the people you’re doing it with, you want to make sure you do right by them.”

Rams Run Game Coordinator Aaron Kromer

(On if T Rob Havenstein will play against the 49ers on Saturday)
“The plan is, and it’s been throughout with (T) Rob (Havenstein), is when Rob gets back to being Rob, then we’re ready to put him in. Whether it’s this week or next – we’re just walking-thru today. Each week we’re just evaluating that situation and waiting for Rob to come back to that point where he is powerful and as strong as he was in the past. That’s still yet to be seen.”

(On if Havenstein’s playing time has anything to do with the offensive line’s current continuity)
“The big thing is really Rob. He’s a really good football player. When we feel like he can help us more than the situation we’re in, then we will do that.”

(On how he would grade how the offensive line’s play in the Dallas game)
“We feel like, as a whole, the team didn’t play well, and that would include the offensive line. When you say that, I go back to what I always say in here, ‘If we can stay within the gameplan of gaining four to five yards on the first play or a couple of yards on the run or play-action pass, whatever it is, you stay on schedule.’ As soon as you get to a point where it’s second -and-10, or first-and-15 – those kinds of situations – it’s hard on the quarterback, it’s hard on the line, it’s hard on everybody. The most important thing is, like we always say is, to stay on schedule because you’ve got to fight your way back. When you put yourself in those kinds of situations too often, the results aren’t going to be good for anybody. Now, do you give up in that situation? No, but it is going to be a lot harder on everyone, including the offensive line. That’s where in the past games leading up to the last one, we were able to do that. We were able to move the ball efficiently on first down, whether it be run or pass. In this game, it didn’t work out that way, and then we got down by a couple of touchdowns and now you’re throwing it the whole time trying to get back in, which is never advantageous for anyone.”

(On if it was scripted to run the ball the first five out of seven plays against the 49ers in Week 6 and how it makes him feel as the run game coordinator to see that kind of success on consecutive plays)
“Obviously, you like to have success in the plans that you have and in the technique that you’re teaching. That’s happened in the past years for us, more often, with some continuity. In that game, to be able to establish a run in that first drive was really important to us, and really got us off to the right start. Didn’t finish at the end of the game the way we wanted, but it definitely is a feeling of accomplishment and you hope you can do that throughout the game. As we improve, we hope we can get that done.”

(On how hard it is to get explosive plays in the run game, knowing strategically what the 49ers defense likes to do)
“Every defense has its pluses and minuses on the run game or the pass game. Like you say, the defensive line is a hard-charging defensive line. They’re all high-quality players, high draft picks and they’ve had success this year – they’ve had a lot of success this year. They play deep to short in the back half to make sure that you can’t get over their head with some deep balls. You see a lot more shell coverage this year than you have in the past as well, instead of the eight-man box. Yeah, you hope that you can get some runs off and have some success running the ball when that’s the case.”

(On what he has made of OL Austin Corbett, T David Edwards, and T Bobby Evans’ contributions so far)
“They (OL Austin Corbett, T David Edwards and T Bobby Evans) really – up until the entirety of the last game – they really have established themselves as having the potential to be really good here. They’ve shown a lot of signs and traits of good offensive line play whether it be in the run or the pass. They’re physical guys – they’re athletic guys. Those two, including Bobby Evans, have really been a good, physical presence for us in this five-game stretch that we’ve had.”

(On the last 49ers game being a rough game for QB Jared Goff and the passing game, and what has to happen for it to be different this time)
“Well, if you can get a drive like we had the first one. Then you don’t get in that situation, but anytime it’s going to be that second-and-10, and third-and-10, right in a row. If you get in getting those two passing downs in a row, if you’re not successful on those then…we have to get the ball off fast and we have to do a good job in protecting. That’s what we’re intending to do.”

    Rams QB Jared Goff

    (On his finger injury)
    “It’s good. It’s good – it’s a little contusion, it’s a little stiff, but I’ll be good in a day or two.”

(On if he will have to wear anything to protect his finger during the game)
“No. I don’t expect to, no. We throw tomorrow and I should be just fine.”

(On if he was wearing a compression sleeve during his press conference)
    “No.”

(On Head Coach Sean McVay referencing him wearing a compression sleeve and it looking goofy)
“Earlier today I might have been. It looked like a wrist brace. It’s off now, yeah.”

(On the most critical component heading into Saturday’s game against San Francisco since last facing them in Week 6)
“Just us executing. I think you go all the way back to that game – it was so long ago – but we did execute well on that first drive. Then, from there on out, we didn’t execute at all. It’s just up to us executing every play, every down and every series. They’re a good defense, they’re a good team and we’ve got to be on our stuff if we want to do our best in this game. We like what we’re doing so far this week and just have to keep it going.”

(On if there is an explanation for him only recording 78 passing yards in the Week 6 game against San Francisco)
“They did a good job on defense and we didn’t execute. We didn’t do anything that we’re nearly capable of and they did a great job on defense.”

(On how much of a difference he thinks it will it make having RB Todd Gurley II available against the 49ers)
“It’s big. He’s (RB Todd Gurley II) one of our best players and one of our guys that we want to get the ball to. If we can get him rolling – it’s always one of our goals – and no different this week.”

(On teams like the Saints and Falcons presenting the 49ers problems in the quick passing game over the last few weeks and if the Rams will look to do the same this weekend)
“They’re a good defense, they’re tough to beat. I think you’ve got to try a bunch of different things. We’ve got a good plan already in place. It’s got a bunch of different things involved in it, but it’s going to be a challenge. They are a really good defense, they’re at the top of the league for a reason and have done a good job for most of the year for a reason.”

(On TE Tyler Higbee having more than 100 receiving yards over the last three weeks and if there is anything to be said about their growing connection during this part of the season)
“He’s (TE Tyler Higbee) become a good weapon for us and I think it’s starting to show. I know we’ve always kind of had that belief in him, as far as his ability as a player, but I think he’s been able to capitalize on all his opportunities these last few weeks. Just circumstances have gotten him the ball a lot, and he’s been able to make plays after that. I think he’s been able to put his talent on display. He’s a good weapon for us and will be utilized a lot moving forward.”

(On what Higbee does for him as a target being a bigger player)
“It helps. He does have that big frame, that big wingspan. I can kind of throw it anywhere near him he’s got great hands, he’s shown all that. We do like using him on stuff where I can miss a little bit at times. He can make that play.”

(On not being able to execute and what he works on to overcome that)
“It’s everyday in practice. It starts every day. It starts with today being out there and really talking through everything. Going through the walk-thrus in an efficient way. Just continuing to execute our stuff. Don’t worry about what they’re doing so much, don’t worry about how to specifically do something here or the other. Just execute what we’re doing, execute what your job is every play. Everything will take care of itself.”

(On if it is easy to get caught up in worrying about that sometimes)
“Absolutely, yeah. We get caught up in it all the time. That’s usually when we’re not playing very well is when we’re trying to be a little bit too intricate with what we’re doing. I’m speaking personally, just play, just have fun, play, execute your job, do what you’re supposed to do every play. It’ll take care of itself.”

(On 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan saying that his defense will try to force him to do things on his own and if that is true with every quarterback or if he sees some quarterbacks who are capable of taking things on their shoulders)
“I think so. I think…I’m not quite sure what your question is.”

(On if he takes it as a criticism if someone says that he is great only when the whole team is on)
“No, I don’t. I think there’s times when that is the case and there’s been times when that isn’t the case. I’ve got a lot of respect for (49ers Head Coach) Kyle (Shanahan), I think he’s a great coach.”

(On WR Cooper Kupp reaching 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career this season)
“It’s been great. It’s been really good to see. I think early on you could kind of see his (WR Cooper Kupp) progress from his ACL injury early on in training camp and then through the year – all the strides that he’s made. Then some of those big games he’s had throughout the year. He’s a hard worker, he does everything the right way, works really hard in practice. He’s a very detailed player and I think it’s showing up and he deserves everything.”

(On what he sees from his teammates and knowing how they rebound from losses)
“I know these guys, I know this team, I know who we are. I expect no different this weekend, we respond well throughout the whole season. We’ve faced adversity a handful of times this season and have responded the right way and I don’t expect this to be any different. I think we have a tough challenge up in San Francisco, for sure. I know that we have to bring it and we will.”

(On the difficulty of not thinking about what has to happen to make the playoffs)
“No, cause it doesn’t matter if we don’t win these next two games. Really narrows it down when there’s a million things that can happen, it can be a little bit more distracting earlier on in the season. At this point, if we don’t win the next two it doesn’t matter who wins or who loses outside of us. So, you can really focus on yourself and everyday in practice it’s very singular-focused on what we need to do.”

Rams Head Coach Sean McVay – Dec. 19, 2019

    (Opening Remarks)
“Injury-wise, (TE) Gerald Everett will be okay to go. He was a full participant this week and he’s feeling good. (CB) Troy Hill, we’ll list him as out for this game. Surgery went well, he’s feeling good, but we felt like the best thing for him – and as we move forward – was going to be to keep him out this week. Then, (K) Greg (Zuerlein) is making good progress. We’ll kick him tomorrow, see how he’s feeling. Have some guys coming in for a workout – really, have one guy coming in for a workout. We keep those things in-house, so we’ll kind of keep consistent with our normal, standard operating procedures with that.”

(On if the team would have to sign a kicker by 1 p.m. on Friday)
“I’m all messed up because we play on a Saturday, but if we did that, we would make that move tomorrow. Don’t have to anticipate that because Greg is feeling good, but might want to make sure that we’re smart about this and have a contingency plan if something does go not according to schedule.”

(On if Zuerlein has kicked this week)
“He hasn’t kicked, but he’s feeling good. It’s more of a precautionary thing than anything else. We wanted to just wait as long as possible until we actually kicked him. Then, if something doesn’t go according to plan, then we at least have somebody in place that you feel good about if that situation comes up.”

(On if there is anything they will specifically look for from Zuerlein when he kicks on Friday)
“Most of it really just requires his feedback to us. If there are some things where maybe his typical range – because he has such great range – is limited a little bit, those are things that we certainly would be understating of because he is our kicker. He’s a guy that’s done it at a high level for a long time. It would really be if it just gets to the point where he’s not able to go and it ends up inhibiting our ability to operate or kickoff, things like that.”

(On if Zuerlein injured himself while kicking)
“He just felt a little bit of a tweak. It was one of those deals where if we had a longer-range field goal that he’s accustomed to – we feel pretty good about where his range is. It was just going to be a little tighter than what the norm is if we had a field goal opportunity for him against Dallas.”

(On what has made 49ers CB Richard Sherman a good player for so long)
“I think you can see – very talented, he’s (49ers CB Richard Sherman) got great concept recognition, elite ball skills. That’s the one thing that you see with him. Then, he seems like a guy that, when he does recognize those concepts, he’s excellent in being able to trigger and you feel like, ‘All right, this might be a guy that’s a good double-move candidate.’ But, he seems like he’s always ready for those. Plays with good technique. You can see he plays with great vision back to the quarterback and he understands how the quarterback’s timing – in terms of his footwork, his drops – are married with route combinations and where that ball can come out. I think that’s why you see some elite production from him. You look at a couple of the picks that he’s had this year, it’s great concept recognition, he’ll come up and tackle. He’s a complete player, he’s been doing it at a high level for a long time. When you get a chance to talk to him a little bit, this is a player that has a really unique, big-picture understanding – extremely intelligent. I’ve always been a big fan of him and very impressed with what he’s done. It’s not surprising, but he’s playing at a high level.”

(On the challenges for a team coming off a Super Bowl appearance)
“Just the challenges that the league entails every single year. Each season is a new one and have to learn how to adjust, adapt, navigate through the inevitable adversities that you do face. I’m not going to shy away from the fact that, up to this point, things certainly haven’t gone the way that we expected. But, we’re going to keep battling, we’re going to keep swinging. We’ve got another opportunity to do that on Saturday and I expect to see us go compete to the best of our ability.”

(On teams playing in the Super Bowl are well exposed to the league and if it’s something he’s experienced)
“I think that’s fair to say. When you’re fortunate enough to have some success, coaches, players are so good in this league and they are always studying. We use that word adjust and adapt, and that’s where you’ve got to make sure you continually do that, and those are things that I’m excited as I continue to learn and as we continue to grow as an organization, as a coaching staff with our players moving forward. Saturday represents our next opportunity.”

(On if it’s a different challenge managing players emotions and motivations of living up to last years expectations after going to the Super Bowl last season)
“I would say this, part of the guys that we want to onboard are the guys that are wired the right way, they are intrinsically motivated, and they bring it on a day-to-day basis, and they respond to the good and the bad in a very consistent manner. I think the biggest thing that you do learn, anytime that there’s an element of success that occurs, human nature sometimes can tell you that, all right, you will do the same things that you did and just get the same results, when in this league it’s so competitive, that just isn’t the case. You’ve got to consistently strive to always improve. You talk about it, but you’ve got to constantly fight that natural inclination to feel like, all right, this success is just going to continually repeat itself by doing the same things, and you can do that in this league. Those are things that, whether we were or weren’t having success, I would believe, just because the nature of how competitive it is, growing up around this business – being fortunate with my grandfather’s experience – you realize how rare it is for some of these teams that are able to sustain success for long periods of time, and you’re always trying to find that formula to do that.”

(On if he’s always avoided trying to do the same thing and expecting the same result when it comes to coaching)
“I think you’re always trying to get better. I love what I do and it’s one of those deals where there is always a self-evaluation – never will claim to be perfect – but, I do think you want to make sure that you’re evaluating yourself honestly, you’re always trying to learn from your mistakes, improve, and really just continually push the standard – that’s by studying, working as hard as you can and surrounding yourself with good people.”

(On what he’s seen from 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo from the beginning of the season to where he is now)
“You can see, like anything else, he’s using his experience to truly gain an ownership, an understanding of what they are trying to get done. I remember even just watching their Thursday night game against Arizona, and how impressed I was with just his poise, his ability to operate, create some off-schedule plays – really within the framework of the pocket on some third-and-longs. Always been impressed with just his ability when things collapse around him, his ability to speed it up, where he’s a really natural thrower of the football. Doesn’t necessarily need a clean platform to get it out, but his upper body, just his twitch and his ability to be able to see something, be able to get it to a guy in a timely manner, has been an impressive thing. I think they do a great job of extenuating his skillsets. (49ers Head Coach) Kyle (Shanahan) is a guy that I’ve learned a lot from. I think he’s one of the best. You see he’s got a great feel for what his players skillsets are, and then how he can also use those to really put pressure on defenses, with a multitude of looks – some different personnel groupings. I think Jimmy’s executed their system excellent.”

(On what he means when he says Garoppolo does certain things well)
“I just would say, if you’re excellent, where you are able to see things and get the ball out quickly if the timing and rhythm dictates, those are some things that you see him do at a really high level. He’s excellent in the play-action game. Then, I also think it’s important with how difficult the quarterback position is as a whole. Any quarterback in this league, it’s such a stressful, I think it’s one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult position in all of sports. I think what Kyle does a great job of, is giving him an opportunity to get into a rhythm with good creative screens, changing that launch point – and things that I’m not saying it’s easy to execute – but it does enable a quarterback to get into a rhythm. You get the ball in some of your playmakers hands, in space. Those are the things that get him going, and then you start to see, all right, now you’re in the flow of the game and you can really make some impressive plays in the drop-back game, in the play-action. You can see really, he can move the spot, he can push the ball down the field. There’s really no weaknesses, I think it’s just a good job of executing the system and Kyle does a nice job of helping get him in to rhythm as well.”
