We’re obviously engaged in a racing structure, rather than football, because it seems like we keep playing for the silver medal. There were 5 mistakes that could have led to about 20 points, it’s work to come in second.
So, what I’m seeing … basically … is that Fisher does not hold players accountable, so the players have to do it. My guess is that a lot of teams have this issue. The ones that win have players that hold them accountable, while the ones that lose, don’t.
On defense we seem to be holding people accountable. Ogletree and Quinn and Donald and TJ seem to be making those around them better.
Good news? If Goff is an aggressive professional who holds his players accountable, then Gurley and Britt will be able to join them and three of them will be able to get things done. Right now Britt and Gurley are not enough, likely because Gurley is young and Britt is a WR.
That’s the one BIG issue with having a young team … if there is no one holding the players accountable, they end up rudderless at the most pivotal moment. Every pack needs an alpha, and we don’t have one. That’s what I’m seeing.
As far as the new coach stuff, you have to understand that I prefer longevity and building talent over making changes. Why? Because at some point the players have to hold themselves accountable … and unless there’s a coach out there that can inspire that, we are going to take a step backwards and downwards. I don’t see any coaches that can do that.
The Good
1) Run defense. Except that one run where Barron chose wrong, we held JS to basically 0.
2) TRU WAS BACK! Just makes me happy.
3) Higbee sighting.
4) Ogletree is getting better every game I think.
5) Barron blowing up Cam … I like being on Sportscenter for highlights.
6) Britt.
7) Benny on the 4th down. Kid gets the guts award every week.
The Bad
8) The fact that there are only 7 good things.
9) Late to Higbee in the endzone.
10) Not only the missed FG, but the fact that we didn’t try for the next two that were in range (55-60). That’s truly upsetting. You have a guy with a leg for a reason.
11) Mo’s missed INT. So close.
12) O line.
The Ugly
13) Saffold.
14) Barnes.
15) A missed wide open Quick.
16) Kendricks drop.
17) Quick not knowing where the first down marker is and not rolling to it. Freaking turnover.
The Suggestion
18) Get Norv Turner for our young QB.
College
19) There are no OTs. If we want to look at replacing GRob, it’s going to be from FA.
20) I’m starting to think we switch to looking at CB in round 3 … the talent will be there.
21) If Corey Davis or Tredavius White makes it to our pick in round 2 … I’m seriously thinking about it. Even over a DE. They’re aggressive playmakers that could get lost in the shuffle.
22) We HAVE to get a Center. They can be had in the 4th or 5th … if Pocic is therein the 3rd he’s gotta be the pick. Elflein and Cole may be had later.
23) We lost two picks, and we got two picks back … so we should have enough picks to work with, even though we don’t have a first rounder. 2nd, 3rd, 2 4ths … etc.
One more thing … It’s time to start Goff. I’m in 100% now. Case is a good kid, and a fine backup … but it’s time.
Thoughts and comments welcome

What a beautiful day for football, the crowd was fired up and ready for a Rams win. But I have never been more embarrassed at a Rams game as I was on Sunday.
The chants for Tim Tebow and fans leaving in droves with 3:00 left when the game was still undecided, was a low for ME.
For ME it symbolized how hopeless Rams fans feel toward this Jeff Fisher coached team.
On to the game:
– As I’ve said many times any defense that has TJ McDonald locked in coverage is fatally flawed. Olsen turned him around like a top for an easy TD. That was either a bad defensive call or Alexander blew the inside coverage. I find it hard to believe you wouldn’t double the Panthers best receiver down there.
– Refs missed an egregious hands to the face against Benny
– Jeff Fisher says that he didn’t hear the crowd cheering for Goff, I wonder what he heard then when he was waving his hands for the crowd to quiet down. I often watch him on the sidelines to see his interaction with his assistants and players. He is such a lousy leader, it is so apparent to most that this team needs a shot in the arm. They need something or somebody to give them a spark. Change the body language, change the chemistry, change the mindset of the team. Maybe Jared Goff could do that, you never know, but I hate to see the defenses efforts wasted as they are.
– Austin is just a bonehead player. He was who Jimmy Johnson was referring to when he proclaimed you don’t draft dumb players
– Higbee has a long way to go as an NFL receiver. He’s not even close right now, and it’s hurting the qb on some pass plays. Higbee you can call him a rookie or a dumb player…take your pick. When you’re running through a zone…sit in the open area of the zone, don’t continuing running into coverage. He failed Keenum miserably on that play.
– Rodger Saffold on 4th 1 gets completely stoned. Rodger you can start by doing better yourself. Rams get that first they keep some momentum.
– Gurley bounce off sometimes. When you run up the back of your blocker, don’t keep churning your legs trying to push the pile, bounce off sometimes. Obviously the scrum is in the hole, bounce it!!!! That’s something you see rb’s do in every game. Its like he can only go in a straight line. So frustrating! he showed the ability to run through HUGE holes last year. The difference? Those HUGE holes aren’t there. I talked about all of this last season when everybody thought he was great. He’s very good in the open field. But most NFL caliber rb’s are.
One the line is not playing as well, both Havs and Saffold have fallen off IMO. One BIG thing for me though is the type of run plays they’re running and Boras failure to stick with the run. Remember all the runs off tackle with the center sealing and a pulling guard kicking? Where are those plays? If memory serves most of Gurley’s big runs were in the second half. I remember a breakout performance against the Birds where they killed them on the ground in the second half. I know Gurley has a lot of carries, but he’s the only back getting carries. Not good.
– Lance has some of the most inconsistent hands of probably any Rams receiver including Tavon. Two more drops, one that should have been picked. The defender looks up the ball falls from Lance’s hip right in his lap. The TD drop got on Lance and he just dropped it. No sun excuse. Keenum put it on him and he didn’t make the adjustment. I would never count on Lance Kendricks to make that really crucial catch. I don’t care how many catches he makes, it would still be in the back of my mind that he’s inconsistent.
– Quick short on 1st down. That wasn’t Quick’s fault, the pass had no zip on the ball and he had to comeback to make the catch. IF I had to blame Quick for anything it would be not immediately getting up to advance the ball. We all know though that his awareness is not the greatest.
– Keenum is such a frustrating player. I guess its to be expected from a marginal player. He will throw an absolutely beautiful pass to Higbee one minute, then loft the ball with to much air under it on others. His touch on passes is as erratic as any I have ever seen.
– Zuerline I know he has been pretty good this season but I’m never comfortable with him. It seems he use to be better at the longer kicks, now he’s not at all. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they upgraded there.
– Rams front kept them in the game, and played well against a patchwork Panthers line. Panthers were missing Kalil at center and their LT, so they made three changes up front. Nevertheless IMO the Rams front played their best all around game against the run and pass.
– GW ran some timely blitzes that were very effective against a qb that likes to hold the ball. Great strategy, but don’t do it against a Brees or Brady.
– Boras doesn’t seem to have the pulse of his offense or the flow of games at all. He doesn’t seem to be able to change things to get them going. When to speed up the tempo, when to stick with the run, etc. Carolina basically pitched a shut-out in this game. There was absolutely no real threat from the Rams offense all day. 15 rushing attempts in a one score game for the most part??? No balance, no tempo, no flow, no continuity, no perceivable plan, no production.
– Cam Newton’s accuracy was awful in this game. I’m happy it was because there were open Panther receivers running free ALL DAY!
– Sorry guys but Mark Barron’s hit on Cam was an illegal hit. Not only did he throw a forearm but there was helmet to helmet contact.
The rule states: Defensive players are not allowed to make more than mild contact with the quarterback once he has released a pass, or any contact with the head of a quarterback whether or not the quarterback is in possession of the ball. A roughing the passer penalty results in a fifteen-yard penalty and an automatic first down. They have to do something about the state of officiating in the game. IMO it is what is making the game hard to watch and possibly why more people are tuning out. Its a great game and it doesn’t deserve this.
One last thing, and I’m sharing this because I was told that he also said it on broadcast. Jackie Slater told ME that Jeff Fisher wanted Jared Goff because he thought that his team was one player away. He felt that Goff was that one player.
Jackie Slater is “inside” enough for ME

Another game that comes down to the final minute and we find a way to beat ourselves yet again. I don’t see any team soundly beating us outside of that first game where the plan was apparently to run even if you can’t run.
Probably time to put the kid in, but Fisher’s gonna do whatever Fisher’s gonna do. It does absolutely nothing for your sanity to try and mind-meld Fisher into making that decision. Over all I thought Keenum played average. Fisher’s right when he says Keenum is playing okay. He played okay. But maybe okay isn’t good enough anymore, Jeff. I hope you change your mind soon. Bad interception and one over-throw, but he had a chance to put us in the endzone by drilling Kendricks in the chest. Maybe he throws too hard now, as opposed to throwing floaters? lol. Whatever it is, it was just disappointing. Add that plus the two missed FGs, and Keenum did enough to win with the aid of that dominant defense.
DOMINANT defense.
Aaron Donald is a straight up beast. Give that guy 7/8ths of the cap space if you have to and keep signing UDFAs to fill out the rest of the team. Cannot lose that guy for anything. Good to see Brockers holding his own again in the middle. Carolina couldn’t get any run game going, and they kept Newton in check. He didn’t beat us with his legs or his arm. He was chumped by our front 4.
What the hell, Mr. The Leg? Wrong time to be less than perfect, m’man.
I liked Austin’s fire. He was getting chippy with his own team on the sidelines, and he played with a lot more intensity than the past couple of games. Hope that continues. Britt is still playing great, and I don’t think there’s any question as to whether or not Quick has arrived. He has.
75 yard punt? LOL. That’ll do wonders for your year-end average. Pretty cool to see.
But crap.
We lost.
Maybe the season is over, maybe it’s not. But it was (again) disappointing.
I don’t think Fisher’s lost the locker room. We know what that looks like. Remember Linehan? Players are actually taking it upon themselves to rally the troops and demand more out of each other, and that’s not something players do when they’re turning on the coach or losing hope. I honestly believe that they believe that they’re a much better team than they’ve been showing, and it’s frustrating them. But they’re not frustrated with the coach, IMO. Because, again, we know what that looks like.
I think Jared might be struggling still with reads and knowing when to check out of a play.
He does run the scout team against our defense. Maybe we’re throwing stuff at him and he’s not picking it up. Doesn’t matter if we think the Jets defense is soft or complex. And Kacy Rodgers is a pretty good D coordinator, btw. It matters whether or not Goff is showing the ability to recognize the things he needs to recognize. -
